I see this in movies all the time.
Is it realistic that people drink out of bags in the US? It seems kind of blatant that they are drinking. What is the point?
There are a few central locations in major cities that drinking is prohibited at certain hours here in the UK but generally it is accepted. ~~~

I never really see it, but it wouldn't surprise me if it goes on a lot in lower-income areas.

Most cities have some sort of public intoxication ordinance. The thinking is an officer won't be as likely to ask you questions if you are drinking out of a bag -- which is ridiculous.

I've seen it before, quite often. It happens in major cities mostly.

This and in my experience, only the homeless do it much in practice.

Yes and no... Depends on locality, and laws on public consumption. Mostly the laws state open display of alcoholic beverages. Thus the brown bag == not openly visible.
Though I do question your reasons for not drinking at a bar or say on your own property or tailgating...(Which is an odd exception made in most places.)

In some places in the US it is perfectly legal to walk down the street and drink, for example much of South Florida is like this.
I was explained a theory about this by a Sociology professor. The phenomena started a few decades ago when it first became illegal for citizens to openly drink in public in certain municipalities. During this time many people used to sit out on their front porches and drink. Quite often they would walk down to the sidewalk to have a conversation. Then at some point in time this all of a sudden became illegal. The officers that had fairly good relationships with the citizens, remember the times were different at this time in the inner cities, did not want to have to start arresting every individual for drinking in public. A rational compromise, probably not even written or spoken about after the original idea had spread, was that these law-abiding citizens would just put their drinks in brown paper bags and the officers could turn a blind eye and actually do police work instead of prevention.
This definitely sounded like a plausible theory.

So you are still allowed to walk down the street with the bottle of Jim Bean in your hand for everyone to see, but not actually drink from said bottle, right?

In the past this was possible, before the rise of the police state.
You see, the act of drinking in public was villified because it was mainly portayed to be the act of black guys looking for trouble. So therefore the couch potatoes - mainly people who stay at home on the weekends because they are afraid to go out - have spent the last 30 years clamoring for new laws for everything and less restraint on the police in determination of what a crime is or is not.
Therefore we have what are known as "open container" laws without which, most American idiots feel, our country would descend into Mad Max status.
And this is why I saw a girl in Fort Lauderdale get a ticket for having a cup of soda a few years ago, and why an empty beer bottle on the floor of your car will get you hauled off to jail, have any cash on you taken (no charge, no judge, no jury thanks to "Civil asset forfeiture laws" brought to you by the same people who hide in their homes and fear everything) and any guns or equipment gone forever (which should earn the cops a 5 year federal sentence for firearms theft if there was actually anything resembling "law" here).
Laws vary from state to state, hamlet to burg, etc. Those cities where they made big buck$ on tourism but then decided they want the tourists but not the party atmosphere (Fort Lauderdale, Daytona, Orlando) that made it popular crack down on it especially. Usually the "outcry" is "it's not promoting a family-friendly atmosphere!!!!1!!!". Yes, all hail "the family" at the expense of everybody elses rights; the answer to group think and group rights at war with individual rights is .... more groupthink and group rights (fail).
The best part is when the cops decide to beat the crap out of you and then charge you with felony assault - and the only way to fight that is if someone got it on video.

Anyway, tell me you joke guys. Beer in brown bag? Jack Daniels to cups but bottle in brown bag? No drinking in parks or front lawn picnic party? This is so funny it must be a joke!

I can state for a fact that during the years of 2000-2004 you could walk around Ft. Lauderdale with alcohol and drink it as long as it was not in a glass container with police all around. Now they may have just not been enforcing it until someone got unruly, but I can not find anything but this on the topic. It would be intersting to see if that has recently changed
Va and a few other States currently do not follow the Transportation Equality Act for the 21st century (TEA-21)
I also agree that the State or Fed should not regulate personal consumption. Punish the individual for acts that cause damage to private property. The police are not their to babysit; they are there to do police work.
I find it funny that the Govt continually wages the war, and loses money while they are at it, on drugs under the presumption that if drugs were decriminilized that the unwashed masses would flock to the local "drug shop" and start doing the hardest drugs possible, all the while letting people drive up insurance costs and the national debt by letting them eat and sit themselves to death under the guise that people have the right not to be told how to live their lives.

In the USA we have to deal with two factions:
1. The (so-called) "right" faction that operates under the idea that we are all too evil to survive, and need a nationalistic nanny-state to lord over us, give up "greater causes" to live for (usually war), and regulate sins. All things police and military are sacred. This faction has its roots in the yankee-christianism of the 19th century that would later give us the temperence movement (prohibition) and the war on drugs. This faction will shout "rule of law" whenever they find no other justification for violations of property rights, liberty, etc.
2. The (so called) liberal faction that thinks we are all too stupid to survive and therefore need a socialistic nanny state to lord (oh wait, that's a religious word...) to "guide" us to the causes of social conciousness. All thing welfare and handouts are sacred, along with "protected" classes of race, gender, etc. This movement got it's start in the late 19th century, likely the Bellamy wing of the progressive movement, and brought us things like disarmament, universal welfare, loss of land rights, corrupt unions, failed government education, and "nation building" at the point of a gun (an idea started in 1916 with Woodrow Wilson's "making the world safe for democracy" - and yes Wilson was a republican). Like the first faction, when they cannot really justify taking your rights, they shout "social contract!".
Now I will wait to be accused of being a Mike Suckabee
In the meantime, a video with at least one good representative knows how dumb this notion about people running out to get drugs if they were legal...[

Recently I had the pleasure to visit the USA. Yeah, it was holiday and I went to the liquor store. I bought some vodka. And I had to smile a bit when I saw the lady putting the bottle in such a brown bag. Leaving the shop I thought of drinking a bit from it, but I had to drive.
It was in Miami. And smoking in public wasn't a problem. There were people drinking beer (without the bag) on the beach, too. Others had cocktails.

Yeah it's for real. Back when I was a kid there were some hobo's that 'lived' around the mechanic shop where my dad worked.. I had a air rifle and shot the bottom out of one guy's bottle, and he was so drunk that he didn't notice til he tried to take a drink ten minutes later...

No you can smoke regular tobacco, but many places are now outlawing smoking in public places (New York, and San Francisco, California but San Francisco is now the city of in your business so that makes sense.) Last I heard there was even a push to make it illegal to smoke if you have children in your house.
I personally think the no smoking in public goes too far, but it is nice not having smoking in bars anymore.

Thanks for reply. It looks like these anti-smoking guys already went to look as parody on life there. Here we had law that banned smoking in bars. Yep sure. Everyone just said "F***k you idiots" to Parliament and continued smoking in bars. When govt tried to enforce it some bars had to close. Newspapers run a few stories about it... law still there but nobody enforce it since politicians want to be voted instead of booted. When one offered to ban smoking in public... well the guy made political suicide and look for work now.

Well from what i read about UK it look more and more like some kind of communist state. Seriously, Soviet Union was trying to regulate it's citizens lifes too much and look where that state now. History books.
Don't get me wrong. I do support laws against drinking and smoking. But sane laws and not like these in US or UK. We have law that prohibit sale of alcohol after 21:00 in shops. That one i support. Another sane law prohibit smoking in offices. It's also sane and supported. But there's not much more that can be done about it without restricting citizen's rights. So here they decided these two is enough when saw they might be out of their jobs for more.

There was a story on the BBC recently about how it appears teenagers exposed to smoke may have impaired hearing. There's been previous stories about how smoke appears to damage hearing in adults too.
Combine a vague threat to children's health, with the paranoia & witch-hunts that the newspapers like, then at some point I would not be surprised for it to be equated to child abuse by the anti-smoking extremists.
Won't someone please think of the children!?!?

No, he's right on. The polar sides have all the power atm and it's why we're days from ****ed instead of working hard to right the ship. Draw that anaology onto the debt ceiling debacle: Tea party is running compromise into the ground at the house and the Dems in the Senate will not promise to work with whatever comes out because of their own agenda. Nevermind we're literally at zero-hour and ALL of their constituents just want to avert disaster so they can continue to live normal-ish.

Sorry but there was a fair amount of truth in what he was saying.. And don't get me wrong, I can't believe I'm agreeing with the guy either.
I don't think he was trying to shoehorn everyone into one of those two sides.. I've seen people with all kinds of beliefs, from libertarian nutbags who want to privatize fire departments to crazed liberals who think there should be no such things as prisons.
But I've also got tons of friends on both sides of the conservative/liberal divide who get along and discuss things rationally and have a great time together. Conservatives who support gay marriage, and liberals who absolutely love their guns.. The people of this country have far more in common with each other than they have differences.
But.. yeah, two big loud factions overrunning all rational discussion and reducing our political discourse to jingoism and shouting matches.. That part is kinda true. And shameful.
Nobody said it would be easy...
