A short but good interview at Videogamer.com with our man-with-the-plan, CCP Soundwave:
EVE Online lead designer on Micro-transactions and more Eve Online lead designer Kristoffer Touborg talks to us about micro-transaction scandals, Dust 514, and the future for EVE Online.
EVE Online has found itself waist-high in controversy. After documents were leaked with plans to bring in gameplay-altering micro-transactions, and the reveal of a $70 in-game monocle, many users took to protesting. Lucky for us, we got the chance to interview the game's lead designer Kristoffer Touborg about the MMO fiasco, the future of EVE, and the upcoming PS3 MMO Dust 514. ______________________

Originally by: CCP Soundwave Overall, changing EVE's formula needs to happen, we're a live product that that needs to exist not just today, but also tomorrow. Part of keeping that product fresh and attractive is making changes to that formula. It's tough, but it has to be done unless we want to fade away. What we need to make sure, is that chose changes to the formula are clearly communicated and that the players are on-board.
I have a question that was ignored in my previous thread...
WHEN will we get a multiplayer station environment?
Please stand by your statment on the need to communicate with us (the playerbase)! --- Jint Hikaru - Miner / Salvager / Explorer / SpaceBum I can tell you that this is one of the moments when we look at what those at CCP will do and less of what they say. |

Originally by: CCP Soundwave I think consumers know just how much they're getting for very little money, which is why they're probably willing to spend more.
Especially for 1 button pwn machines
Originally by: CCP Soundwave I don't think I'd have to look far down my credit card statement before being able to identify purchases that are much less value for money than some of the things I've bought in MMOs. I used to smoke cigarettes, and I'd certainly rather spend that money on buying virtual dresses.
As long as it sticks to fashion and vanity items I don't really care, far to many F2P (Free to Pay imo) games are dominated simply by who can throw more money at it... -Fox Starrunner |

Thats what bothers me most about this.
Why is it, that we the player base get half arsed answers and vague promises - sometimes blatantly broken.
When ****ty online gamer websites get interviews like that?

Because marketing involves big think and lies, not truth and accountability. If they actually answered some of the key customer questions that have been posed they would have to pod themselves.
I wonder who is on the bottom of the respectability pile now - lawyers or marketers?

I would just like to add that I am not against WIS. When it gets fully realized, I believe it will be a very good thing for Eve. I am also not against the NEX store for Vanity only (however the prices and limited options do worry me).
My main concern is that CCP are doing their hardest to get us to buy into the NEX store (granted thats good business sence), but WTF is the point of us buying Boots when nobody can see them. Once we can walk around stations and interact with other players, the store will come alive and many more people will start using it.
The whole way things have been rolled out is wrong, and the only reason I can see for the way it has happened is because they have been talking about WIS for years and still dont know if they can do it. So we get a solo-play room and vague snippets of 'things to come'...
CCP, MAN-UP and tell us what is going on and tell us WHEN we will get a multiplayer station environment! --- Jint Hikaru - Miner / Salvager / Explorer / SpaceBum I can tell you that this is one of the moments when we look at what those at CCP will do and less of what they say. |

It surprises me when people comment that an "interview" is great when none of the pertinent questions are asked that still linger within the community. That interview asked every question that has already been answered.
But there are questions that still linger. The most important of them all: Will there be non-vanity items?
Without asking the important questions an interview is nothing more than a mouthpiece for the person being interviewed.
And you think that's a good interview?

Soundwave's a ****. Here's your standard amount of bull**** spewing from his mouth again:
"99 per cent of your players might think a 500 dollar pink leather vest or sparkling pony is silly, but there is still that 1 per cent of your users that think it's the most amazing thing ever produced."
You're a idiot. This is the most ******ed business modal I've ever heard of.
"...they need to be there to make the collectors happy and let the rest of us go "what a sucker" when we see someone wearing them."
Oh really now? So you're saying that the opinion of CCP developers is that anyone that buy's these NEX items is a sucker? Wow, I'm sure the people that buy stuff from your store are felling pretty ashamed right now.
"I think the average player had a lot of questions at the time that needed to be addressed. I think the reaction of "tell us what's going on!"
Way to go not paying attention again. The reaction was: "Stop being fuk tards and ruining my eve." Something that you've continued to do regardless.
"No one wants to repeat the same thing over and over for years"
You mean all those thing's in EVE that we've been repeating over and over again for years?
"There are a lot more people sticking up for captains quarters on the forums now, than before launch"
I still see the 'turned it off thread' pop up every so often. CQ Staring at a door in station, sucks for greater ****s then you could ever possibly dream of, soundwave. Want innovation? Make it an option. Idiot.

"Overall, changing EVE's formula needs to happen"
This statement tells the consumer base that MTs for non-vanity items are GOING TO HAPPEN. Forget that nonsensical lie about no plans for such - they clearly do have such plans. And for the completely idiotic mouth breathers who think that white knighting for CCP is in some way beneficial, don't bother. Just wait 2 years and see, MTs for non-vanity will be a reality in EVE.

The statement "Overall, changing EVE's formula needs to happen" in no way says what you are so fervently stating as fact. You can say it as often as you like, but only the most gullible of forum sheep are going to jump on that bandwagon based on that statement.
Perhaps I should start mouthing "Overall, changing EVE's formula needs to happen" ACTUALLY means switching to a pen and paper format. Might as well, it has as much validity as your assertion. ===== The world will not end in 2012, however there will be a serious nerf to Planetary Interaction. |

I'm still trying to understand how selling $70 monocles is 'future-proofing' the game. Wouldn't bringing out more content for everyone to enjoy, fixing things that are broken and completing half finished features (FW for example) be more in line with making the game continue far into the future.
I just don't understand this logic. So expensive vanity items are the future of EvE? Or do they mean that more money for the investors will keep EvE around longer.

Well in theory, taking into account inflationary pressures on global currencies, at some point in the dim future $70 for an MT items will be cheap. Perhaps this is what Soundwave means by "future proofing"?

I'm looking at you when I say Mouth Breather.
Your argument is silly because CCP internal memos have already stated that they are looking at implementing non-vanity items. Memos and Emails that have already been publicly released state this. We all know that the nebulous "we have no plans" has already been used, by CCP, when they did indeed have plans (the entire MT thing to begin with started out with a "we have no plans" and 10 months later was implemented).
But whatever, wait 2 years and then see what argument you are using to white knight CCPs lies. It's funny because I don't even really care about MTs - it's just that they are a clear example of CCP not following up on their commitments. Really I'm mad because CCP left EVE to rot, and rot it has.

"99 per cent of your players might think a 500 dollar pink leather vest or sparkling pony is silly, but there is still that 1 per cent of your users that think it's the most amazing thing ever produced."
What CCP Soundwave doesn't acknowledge however is that the 99% who thing a 500 dollar pink leather vest is so silly that they abandon the product because they no longer want to be associated with it, or its business model.
As a result you lose those 99% and end up with the 1% who think 500 pink leather vests are "the most amazing thing ever produced" who in turn abandon the product because only 1% actually play it.

I'm looking at you when I say panic stricken forum sheep.
I've seen the "memo" and fully understand why it was written.
I am familiar with the "we have no plans" hysteria propagated by people still desperately trying to be considered relevant and informed.
I was involved in the discussions and circumstances surrounding the original oft quoted "statements" concerning the implementation of MT in EVE and understand the meme's being tossed around as gospel have little to do with what was being discussed at the time.
I have heard all of this crap before over the years. These forums excel at taking what was said and warping it over time to mean something else entirely, or more often taking what was NOT said and making the silence mean whatever will incite the strongest reaction in the simple minded.
You either sincerely believe the drivel coming out of your mouth, and are merely easily manipluated by forum trolls more clever than you, or you realize you are vomiting up emotion charged conjecture for the sole purpose of trolling others.
Either way, you've got a lot to learn.
