Hi all,
Ok, I have been dabbling a bit in what one can generally do in EVE these days. My char is only 3 weeks old. I think I would prefer to specialize in Mining, Industry, Exploring and PI. I know, only one would be specializing, but I was wondering if it is feasable to do all these on one char, or would it be better to drop something?
They all seem fun to me. Sure I like the occasional combat, but it definately is not my thing enough to make it a dedicated profession. Also, for now a second account is really not an option for me, so that's why I would like to incorporate these career lines all in one character.
What do you guys think? Would I be really hampering myself by choosing this route? Or is it more like: do whatever you think is fun, and then you are good to go?
My initial thought was to focus on mining and PI at first. Then when I have some stock of minerals work on Industry and on the side to some Exploring to have a change of things. I might do the occasional mission here and there as well. Just to not do the same all the time.
What are your thoughts about this?

Edited by: Dust Fourtwenty on 29/07/2011 17:26:24 they're all good for dabbling but some of them (hello mining) might get pretty boring and are a pretty restrictive career path (you can do one thing - mine - and it's always the same).
exploration will result in combat, and if you train for some cruiser or battlecruiser to respectable skills for exploration, you can also take it into other types of combat if you become interested in that stuff.

It not impossible to do, but it will take some time to train skills in all the areas you mentioned. I would advice you to make a 1 year training plan, so you can get the most out of your remaps, and at the same time plan your skills so you don't feel to limited or useless in-game.
You should download eve mon and eve fitting tool, both are a great help when making a training plan.

I'm a jack-of-all-trades.
It takes longer to reach a similar level of competency as someone that specializes, but it doesn't prevent you from doing anything. The choice is yours.
My skills look like this:
Level 0: 1 (0.41%) Level 1: 2 (0.83%) Level 2: 68 (28.22%) Level 3: 33 (13.69%) Level 4: 76 (31.54%) Level 5: 61 (25.31%)
I train almost everything I can inject to level 2 (I avoid skills which are pointless without other skills). If I use the skill a lot, I train it to level 4, unless it is a higher ranking skill that is slow to train, then it will only be level 3. If it is greatly important to my gameplay, or a prerequisite for a skill I really want, I train it to level 5.
If I had to do it all over again, I probably wouldn't have trained all the science skills, trade skills, and social skills (missions), as I have alts that do those now.

that is actually exactly how my character is set up.
I am able to fly a perfect Hulk, have all the named refining skills to L4, Deep Core Mining, etc - great mining character.
I am also able to do all the PI with max planets and Command Center Upgrades to 5.
Also have one skill left before all my exploration skills are at level 5.
So it is possible, but I would focus on one area at a time, I started with mining. Then had to learn some exploration because I moved into a WH, then learned PI to produce fuel for the corp's POS.

Another Jack of all trades reporting in to say that being one is very enjoyable, especially if you like to experiment with different game mechanics. _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |

Yeah, there's no problem with doing all those things on one character just, as mentioned - concentrate on them one at a time if you want to make money faster.
If you don't care about how fast you make money and are more interested in exploring different facits of the game - then you can train them in parallel.
All those skills are useful to an industrialist - especially if you start making T2 items.
You are going to be hard pressed to ignore missions all together though.
If you mine - the safest way is to mine the asteroids you find in mission space. That way - you can fill as many jet cans as you want - then come back and get them later with an industrial. Just remember that jet cans & wrecks last 2 hours.

You can make quite a nice profit from exploration, which require less skill them level 4 missions. The only problem is going to be standing, if that is needed you are somewhat forced into doing missions.

Ignore the mining part, replace that with combat oriented skills for PVE. There just isn't enough money in mining right now. And it's just boring like there is no tommrow. You can make more running lv4's in a mission runner, and it's not as boring. I am actually doing something simmilar, I have my mission runner and I started branching off into some of the industrial side for additional income on the side. I am still in the process of the skill training, so I can't tell you exactly how it's working out but from what I can guess it will be a sizable amount of my monthly income considering I don't get on that much anymore.

Thanks for all the detailed and elaborate replies. At least I now know that it is not such a weird idea, and viable as well.
I will definately keep the reputation in mind and plan that in my training 'schedule'. Sounds like fun to have to do missions as a means to change from the routine of the things I already had in mind of doing.
Just one more question: For this combination, is there a race that is more suited, ship wise I mean, for these purposes? As in that Gallente is favourable for these roles due to the emphasis on drones, or Minmatar for their flexibility, or any other motivation for that matter, or race? I'm training both Gallente and Minmatar up at the moment, and in a few days I should be able to fly my first mining barge. But if you guys would advice to go for certain race type ships, I'd very much would like to hear about them.
Thanks again for all the advice. It's very helpful.

I did missions until Level 4s were a cakewalk. Then I did trading and made some real cash. Then I did low sec piracy and killed my security status. Now I'm doing 0.0 ratting to regain security status.
Next will be industry, trading again or nullsec PvP. I haven't decided yet. I have a few months to decide while I regain security status :P
go go jack-of-all-trades.
