When the door opens and the masses are let loose in stations, I predict a negative effect on the dispersion of the populace. people have a natural desire to socialise and the impact of such a powerful new feature will draw people together.
Crowding does not have as much of a negative influence on people living in a crowded station as one might expect. Cognitive and social factors may aid in preventing such an influence. People with a sense of control seem to experience less stress than people without this sense.
When others are present, they distract us from the task at hand, again influencing performance according to social facilitation. In these cases, arousal seems to stem from the difficulty of performing a task while reacting to others. This effect has also been demonstrated in nonhuman species. It is entirely possible that this crowding will lead to a drop in PVE activity and have a negative effect on the economy.
When other people watch what we do, this impacts our performance. If we are highly trained at something, or it is a really simple task, our performance will often improve. On difficult or new tasks, our performance will be more likely to suffer. This is called social facilitation, and is caused by arousal, either from people judging us, or from people who are simply distracting us. This effect has been reproduced in many settings, like the high-sec ice-belts and crowded environments. In busy systems, its effect seems to be reduced by cognitive and social factors, such as a sense of control.
This will leave large tracts of space empty despite the negative effects on the individuals productivity in an overpopulated environment.
I am not sure if this is a good or a bad thing. For myself, the blessing of quieter spaces is welcome, although the deficit of PVP roaming opportunities will be the source of much dissatisfaction. I propose introducing a novel application of the NeubertûCaswell model for analysis of wave speed for structured populations. Because dispersal as well as vital rates are structured, the model allows for distinct dispersal kernels for different types of progeny and thus permits comparisons of the sensitivity to changes in demographic and dispersal parameters of in situ population growth rate versus population spread across space. ~~~

Neubert-Caswell is a model for dispersal of populations. What we need is proactive mechanisms for discouraging the concentration of populations, such as tonnage/occupancy limits in stations, tonnage/passage limits on stargates, and other limits to concentration of transit and occupation.

I certainly thing CCP are going to have to consider zoning laws and heavy adjustments to infrastructure. Despite the non existence of sprawl, due to the mox-tardis effect of stations, there will still be trafficing issues and resource availability will lead to social unrest. Dense populations have always lead to dissent and increased crime rates too. Just look at present day Jita for an example of what these supernodes of the not to distant future will become. ~~~

Uh, you mean even more than Jita already is?
People in concentration = money. It's pretty typical behavior with the time-space consideration. The only way that centralization is going to become unpopular is by introducing teleportation. But monocles already do that, so it can't be that far away.
But it won't matter, all time daily average are still dropping (read left to right please).
Eve-Offline
Average users per day has dipped under 30k for the last week. Summertime leads to less players online, but not that severely. That's reaching to 2009 levels. Basically, EVE has gone back 2-3 years in activity levels - I don't know how that translates to subscriptions, but 10,000 less players than 6 months ago is clearly not a good thing. 10,000 Less players than has been recorded in the last 2 years is not a good thing.
You won't have to worry about de-centralization, you have to worry about depopulation.

I doubt each station will have its own unique environment. For anyone familiar with how Global Agenda handles the Dome City, or how Guild Wars lobbies the cities, I can pretty much guarantee it's going to be like that.

I'm drawing mental parralels to Kowloons Walled City, where self policing kept the locals safe due to the understanding that any acts of larceny would lead to decisive action. Not much intervention on the macro level will be required by CCP once the social norms have been entrenched. The greater outlook required of CCP will be in dispersal techniques and dealing with the relocative nature of asset flow. Natural meanders must be obstructed with incentivising 'chevron' toolsets and much monitoring of modal-phase alterations must be taken. CCP's recent telemetry software should aid in this task. ~~~

I've lost track of what CCP said about stations, either all will be the 'same' with options for shops/etc and 'content' or they will all have some basic functional 'stuff' and only a few will be mecca type stations you will want to be at to show off your avatar or make use of the most services/etc.
Either way people will cluster if it benefits them and shops/stuff have the real potential to cause clustering, that and other 'content'. If stuff is limited to certain stations, which is likely with mecca type stations as CCP is cheap and lazy in making content/stuff, not spreading it around means the best places to be will be few. It also just makes more sense to have fewer places to 'be' the content is what will really drive players either you can't do this/that everywhere or this/that isn't available ie establishments/players or unique incarna 'content'(ie the sort of thing CCP Flying Scotsman would like to see) which is probably years away from actually being made if ever.
Right now NEX offers almost nothing to markets so a hub doesn't benefit much from people reselling them there you might as well convert your own plex than buy it with isk and pay more isk than it would cost you to get it yourself from a reseller. If there is no content and signs point to that being the case it will have little effect on normal FIS gameplay.

The player will be all in one spot? Say like in Jita 4-4?
Wait they are already...

I can't see the problem if some player decide to socialize, it's that why people play an mmo?

Why do limies always put an S where a Z belongs? Pronounce "centralized" out loud...there's no S in there! Bugger all!
Oh. Wait. The lady is zeriouz. I mission in a particular system near Amarr. There's usually 7 people in it none of whom speak in local. I doubt I'll be roaming a station hoping to run into them.
I log to run missions. This means I have no time to socialize. We're trying to reinstall Amarr as the ruling order of the universe, and who knows? I may run into some random Minatar scum and have to drop some chains on him and drag him home. Who has the time to fuss about one more slave?
I'm busy. Let those who aren't hang out together and circle jerk for all I care. At least they won't be dragging the name "Ninja" in the dirt trying to salvage my missions.
Please wait as this sig- nature finishes loading

I think he meant Limiez too. It's kind of hard to knock him for his English though when he is a foreigner trying his best to make use of the poor education provided to him in his country.
Of course to provide some constructive feedback to aid in future racial slurs the correct spelling is 'Limey'.

Edited by: Abriael VonRosen on 30/07/2011 17:07:25 personally, I'd say that seeing some crowd is good. Empty space to do my things undisturbed is also good. Win/Win.
I just hope WIS will come soon, because we really waited too much for it. Don't care if they put it in bit by bit, but i want to get out of the CQs and see some boobs that don't belong to my price checking alts. -- Abriael

I am not making a stance either way but I would indeed welcome player ownership of geographic landmarks outside of sovereignity.

Lady spank typing a well thought out and consise post? Is this serious or troll? Always assumed a forum troll of low caliber, Tom Gerad is high caliber that is an attention seeking or likes to here himself speak (in the typing sense of the internent) . I might be going crazy as well.
But yeah, in station was something I thought was going to be useless a long time ago. Jita and other market hubs will be populated and laggy (Ah, Bazar back in the EQ1 2003-2004 days, had to navigate by staring at shoes) while areas deep kador or null/lulsec will be empty. Pretty sure EVE is going the way of Farmville, Twitter, and other stupid social networking concepts.

Worried about populations congregating? Not to worry!
Through intense scientific study lasting many years, I have found that when you change the pole dancers from 20 year old women over to middle aged males, it has a tendency to disperse 'the herd' rather effectively.
