Heya,
I'm a rather noobieplayer that do missions to fund my constant losses trying to pvp in low/null. I find all lvl4s to be very easy, though they take some time to complete. I run them in my 6blaster MWD armor Myrmidon (yeah, not optimal for lvl4s, but it feels like what I learn is also somewhat usable for pvp, and it's fun)
I just noticed that I have standing to run lvl5s. I have about 13M SP, 5 of which are dronerelated. I've focused on smaller ships (covops V for example) and cant fly anything larger than BC. Gun skills are mediocre, and I don't have skills for large guns.
What would your advice be for running solo lvl5s? I'm acutely aware of the risk involved with lowsec (just check my KB ;)
Specifically; what should I train for? What's a good strategy? I want the skills to be relevant for Pvp if possible... Going for batlleships or Proteus would be about the same time (for acceptable ship+gun levels) and then command ships. Should my main criteria be "find a ship with lots of lows so I can fit two stabs?"
Please advice!

Tengu specifically (rather than T3 in general) even after the change so they're no longer unprobable? If so, would you mind elaborating why? |

If so, would you mind elaborating why? 1. they are probable "in theory". in practice you need lvl5 scanning skill + implants to pin down it in time. 2. tengu is fast, easy to fit and tank and can do good outgoing DPS for each damage type for every range from 0 to 120km or more. 3. cruiser size and speed + t3 resists + missiles = good for passive tank (hello to neutralize towers in lvl5). |

yes, people forget that the nerf was actually quite mild since you need what equates to a maxed out probing character in a rigged cov ops, with sisters equipment, full virtue set (1-2bil+) and high grade hardwirings to probe what was once unprobable.

Passive tanking Ishtar is also a option. |

Thanks guys!

so it seems my focus on armor-tanking is not suitable at all then. *sigh* =)
If I understand this right; my first priority should really be to learn to sheildtank, rather than targeting any other ship for now, right? I guess that will be awesome anyway; as it'll open up the possibilities for gank-fits.. :) |

It is possible with extreme active tank builds(extreme quick cap recharge and resists required) but given that you will most likely die to lag, desync or cap bugs it is not very recommended(warping out twice in structure after short lags gets your puls up ).
Something like this works against guristas/caldari, however a 2. ship for clearing jammers and adding DPS is highly recommended(also you need the extra DPS to break the carrier in one of the missions).

A few points:
Even before unprobable nerf, Tengu cannot be made unprobable while still able to tank lvl5s reliably. There aren't enough mids to go around.
Maxed out scanner skills are standard for dedicated scanners. Many lowsec ones also do put SOE implants in their heads. The nerf is real.
Single ship actively tanking through neuts is not doable. Both cap recharge and neut/usage happen in cycles, and will run through the optimal 33% point. If it's barely stable, it's unstable. |

Thanatos (if it can get through the accel gate), otherwise brick tanked tengu with a scimi alt to rep you after you get neuted to hell. Dont worry about probability, just fit an improved cloak in your extra high and warp to a safe and cloak up when a neut enters local (if they cant pick you up on D-Scan they will usually bugger off in a few min to look for juicier targets), dont forget to fit a cloak to the RR alt too. |
