Just wondering if you guys where planning any lore explanation on Aurum at all. Some halfbaked lines about its inception how and why would do, rather than now just pops out off thin air. Or is the lore in the process off being flushed out the toilet accompanied with Abba's "Money Money Money"

Edited by: Lucius Vindictus on 31/07/2011 18:28:57 Most of the info is already out there. So what is there to explain? Plex (a license only available to a certified capsuleer) gets exchanged for Aurum, so apparently it's a currency only available to capsuleers (or at least the obscenely rich in New Eden). There were already planetary currencies within the empires. This is simply yet another form of currency.

They still haven't explained why a pair of boots for a capsuleer costs as much as the United States funding for the war on terror.

Yes. The pricing is downright ridiculous. If a celebrity IRL would pay a billion dollars for a pair of boots they'd be a laughing stock. Rich people aren't usually stupid people...
On the other hand... this problem isn't new. Everyday items that you'd buy in a store cheaply costs many time a normal persons lifetime salery on the capsuleer market (food, electronics, etc)

1 pair of socks for the price of the whole military funding of a small country may seem overpriced, but we are capsuleers. so there you got one reason why its overpriced. the second reason would be that you got an infinite supply of these kind of clothes (eg. when your pod with those expensive clothes in its trunk gets blown up you immediately get new ones). and lastly its so that you can show ridiculous wealth, and yes there are people that like to do so by showing off ridiculously overpriced clothes (i mean srsly who wears this monocle because it LOOKS GOOD?).
as for where aurum comes from? afaik it was explained in the incarna release as in "currency exclusively for the capsuleer who wants to buy stuff from the NeX stores" kinda like those dollars you get in strip clubs ;)

The logic was already distorted the moment we were able to exit our heads without cameras (i.e., see our bodies from outside). We are pretty much doomed to enjoy a clash of universes, I reckon.

How so? I don't see anything inconsistent with playing a character in 3rd person.
On topic, there's just no way it will work. I tried thinking of ways to square it with the lore here:
http://eve-search.com/thread/1533217/page/1#1
Quote: Implication: There some aspect of the Yulai Convention preventing ordinary clothing merchants to sell to capsuleers. Despite all their wealth, even something so simple as a dress is out of their reach. And not even a very nice looking dress. So suffer the immortals. Only the NEX corporation can make it through this legislated impass, and devote 99.9999% of the item cost to buying their way through CONCORD fashion police agents.
Nullsec, while nominally lawless, is full of hard working CONCORD fashion police, enforcing the clothing embargo against capsuleers with total efficiency.
If the Nex store is the only clothing store in the universe, the prices sort of make sense. They have a captive market. But then, there needs to be some reason why the only people I can buy a T-shirt from is Nex.

But then why can't I just drop 100 isk, send my assistant to the nearest highsec temperate planet, and buy 1 of every single high fashion clothing item? Why do capsuleers have no choice but to spend the modern equivalent of billions of USD on a pair of pants?

Just referring to the fact that even one's POV had an explanation in EVE -- cameras floating around our ships. Having left that (rather than have 1st-person POV in stations according to the same logic), we're now in a position to enjoy personal vanity items to the full (no hermetically-sealed "vanity cams"). I'm suggesting that the step into that (in prior-EVE terms) illogic is what made other illogic (like NeX prices) "acceptable". As I see it, we've pried open a different kind of universe (the Vaniverse?).
This isn't to say that I'm not enjoying the leap. I happen to like Incarna (as a first step into something new, at least) and, as evidenced by my subscription, I'm willing to put up with the fallout in illogic. So, in answer to the OP's query, I think we're stuck.
