I'm giving Eve a second try and still feel a bit lost. I know if I continue to play this game it will only be for PvP but I've seem to have settled into a groove where all I do is grind missions and I'm not learning anything at all about PvP. I've seen a few guides and videos on the mechanics of PvP or the "how to" of it all but first I have to ask "Why"?
1. Can you profit from PvP? Do you obtain salvage from your opponents wreck if you win or something? Do they drop loot?
2. If you do profit from PvP is it enough to support your PvP habit (assuming you win over half of your fights)?
3. Who can you attack and why do you want to attack them?
4. Why do corporations wage war between themselves?
5. Can I bounty hunt and is it profitable?
6. If PvP isn't self supporting is grinding missions they only way to generate cash with a PvP focused skill set?

"Can you profit from PvP? Do you obtain salvage from your opponents wreck if you win or something? Do they drop loot?"
Yes, opponents do drop loot (each module fitted and each item in the cargohold has a certain chance to drop in the wreck vs being outright destroyed. And yes, you can salvage their wrecks for parts too. But overall, PvP is only profitable for people who are really good at it, because the value of stuff dropping is usually noticeably smaller than the value of stuff destroyed, and you don't always survive long enough to turn those gains into ISK.
"If you do profit from PvP is it enough to support your PvP habit (assuming you win over half of your fights)?"
Depends what type of ships you fly and what types of ships you fight against, depends how often can you find decent targets, how often you encounter blobs, how often can you sell the loot and so on and so forth. You could still end up better off financially even if you lose 80% of your encounters, or you could end up worse off if you win 80% of your encounters. It's way too circumstantial to say for sure. Generally, it's quite difficult for a PvP lifestyle to pay for itself.
"Who can you attack and why do you want to attack them?"
You can attack anybody anywhere at any time. The drawbacks of doing it in highsec (if not wardecced or flagged) is loss of CONCORD standing and quick destruction by CONCORD forces (you can still make a profit even like that, if you manage to kill a juicy target with a rather cheap ship and have an alt pick stuff up). The drawback of doing it in lowsec is standings loss and (if fighting at a gate/station) the NPC turrets//guns also assisting the "victim". The only drawback in 0.0 or w-space is the hate of your victims.
"Why do corporations wage war between themselves?"
So they can attack the victims in highsec without CONCORD interference nor standings losses (second one goes for lowsec too).
"Can I bounty hunt and is it profitable?"
You can, but it's doubtful it will be very profitable. It can be profitable, but it's difficult to actually get that profit.
"If PvP isn't self supporting is grinding missions they only way to generate cash with a PvP focused skill set?"
You mean "by shooting at stuff", don't you ? It's also not limited just to missions, but granted, in highsec, missions are the best overall option for "making ISK shooting at stuff". There are plenty of things you can do with minimal skills that don't involve shooting at things, like, say, trading. Or manufacturing T1 stuff. Or PI. They require a couple of weeks of skill training to be able to be reasonably effective at earning ISK that way.

Thanks for the information. One more question on corp wars if you don't mind. Are the corporations actually fighting over anything like say territory? Or are they killing each other just for the fun of it?

It is not really possible to hold territory in high-sec. Sometimes a war might be fought over a high-sec POS, which is about as close to holding territory as there is in high-sec. Another reason that corporations might actually fight over something is to avenge a perceived slight.
However, the vast majority of wars involve killing for the fun of it, and normally it is one side that is having all of the fun.

Is there any "Red vs Blue" or "Good vs Evil" type PvP in the game? Faction wars or something? I like PvP but I like to pick a side or team to support instead of just free for all anything goes death match kinda PvP.

There are two player created alliances at perpetual "red vs blue" war which you can join for semi-mindless shooting with a few generally agreed upon rules. They're not the first and probably not the last, but they're the most well-known at this time.
Quote: Faction wars or something?
Yes, there are NPC militias for each of the four major empires, militias which you can either join as a pilot or have your entire player corp join it. They're also basically perpetually at war with eachother (Caldari+Amarr vs Gallente+Minmatar). Most of the fighting happens in lowsec "contested" systems, but it's not unheard of to see fighting happening in highsec systems - it's a bit harder for the aggressors, because NPC faction ships also join the fight (the higher highsec the system is, the larger the NPC response). Some Caldari militia pilots were fooled into thinking Jita was "safe" but were slaughtered pretty badly by a Gallente militia incursion into Jita in the early days of FW. _
