Hello.
As I'll be soon be able to fly battleships, I wanna plan ahead for level 4 missions. Since I'm rather low SP (1.1mil atm) my DPS will not be superb, and the same goes for my tanking ability.
I'll be able to tank about 280-300dps with specific hardeners, and dish out around 360-380 DPS before resistances at long range. So, what missions do I definitely want to avoid before I hop in and find myself scrammed and webbed by 30 frigates with 40 battleships knocking on my armor.

Pro tip: know your triggers and kill scrammers.

Edited by: Aitena on 03/08/2011 07:32:41 Do yourself a favor and get a T2 tank first. If you're only tanking 360-380 dps, there will be many missions that are risky at best for you to attempt. My advice is to get your tanking skills up higher before attempting L4's.
Having said that...
Don't attempt any missions involving the mercenaries as a general rule unless you are confident in your tank or your kiting ability (neither of which is true in your raven). They close range and deal lots of damage. But if in doubt, check eve-survival.

Edited by: Jak Silverheart on 03/08/2011 12:15:31 I be honest with that low SP you may want to just use a Drake. Get a T2 tank first, than T2 heavy missiles so you can use scrouge fury missiles, and bring up all your support skills. Chances are you be doing missions faster this way in a drake than a Raven at this point, till you can get your skills up for the raven. The drake requires little skill to use, and your able to tank it like there is no tommrow so it will get the job done, and it will be a lot safer to do missions in right now. The raven on the other hand with your skills will be nothing more than a battleship size pinata from what your telling us, and will require a lot of skill on the user side to not get popped.

Edited by: Bane Necran on 03/08/2011 15:21:39 However tempting it is, do not rush into L4 missions.
Like others have said, get all your tanking modules upto T2. Even T2 electrified armor, if armor tanking is your thang. And i can't recommend solid drone skills enough. They're the only thing which can save you when scrammed and taking a beating, which will happen a fair bit as you learn how to do them. For PvE DPS is secondary to tanking ability, as far as i'm concerned. So after you get a solid tank start working on improving DPS as you do L4s.
I rushed into them myself and lost a Maelstrom because i had a crap tank and weak drones. Was the first ship i ever lost, and it took me ages to buy and fit. I actually ragequit for a couple months after.

Edited by: Kraven Stark on 03/08/2011 15:42:53 I'm going to agree with the others here. In lvl 4's you will sometimes run into scrams and with a poor tank you will get eaten up before you can break free.
If you are playing with an isk per hour mindset, lvl 3's will be a lot more profitable until you skill up enough to run 4's properly.
At nearly 5.5 mil SP, I am relatively recently doing lvl 4's comfortably in a Drake. I haven't moved up yet because my BS skills are so poor that I do the missions slower in a Raven and nearly all my SP is geared towards doing PvE missions.
Getting a Drake would be a good idea and then stay on lvl 3's until you can use tech II on just about everything on your standard Drake setup, including Drones, before moving on to 4's. You'll want TII drones because your ability to kill smaller ships in lvl 4's will greatly reduced with your larger missiles and you will need to rely on your drones to kill the frigs.

Avoid worlds collide, EA 5/5, Blockade, Vengeance, an advantageous catastrophe and unautorized military presence.
I would recommend you read this first:http://eve.battleclinic.com/loadout/27770-Perfect-Starter-Lv4-Mission-raven.html
It's the best advice you can get for Lv4's with a Raven.

Stop the Thief can get you in trouble in the second room as well. It's still one of my least favorite missions. Smash the Supplier for anything but the blitz can be hairy.

The toughest level 4 mission I ever did with low skill (mostly level 2 and 3) and in a Drake was Vengeance (Sansha), but I managed to finished it by buying a little bit of Caldari Navy Thunderbolt EM missiles just for the last boss. The last boss has a ton of rep.

Just accept any mission, get blown up, learn lesson, then go back to LV3s. I know I did that back when and it is an important lesson about skill training.

At least get skills up to using 5 x T2 light drones. I delayed this training for a long time, but after getting them wished I had done it sooner. T2 shields also very much needed. I also found Energy System Operation very important to train up, this was one I also never bothered with in the beginning.

I have never done any lv 2 or lv 3. I started soloing lv 4's with something around 2mil SP (Learning skills at that time took ~ 500k of them iirc)
Never lost a battleship to any lv 4. Thanks to a good friend, EvE survival and Mike from Battleclinic with his awesome Raven starter fit and explanations in them.

Those stats are better than I had when I did my first lvl 4, just use Eve survival. Decline the few that look a bit too tough and it will be fine.

I actually started doing 4s at about the same SP level as the OP. I know that everyone recommends caution and that is important, but as a very low SP character (2.3 mil) running level 4s, I make way more money doing 4s than 3s. Do I do them slow?..painfully (probably because I made the genius decision to go rails in a megathron).
Have I learned some hard lessons? Yes, pop them damn scram/web frigs first! I learned to research the missions first and know which group to pull and which enemy to kill last. Eve-survival is your friend. Even with these hard lessons, I was making enough money to replace my BS ('don't fly what you can't afford to lose' as the proverb goes).
Know which missions to decline. For me that's Recon. I lost a BS to 1 of 3 and then turned right around and lost another one to Recon 2 of 3. But, as already stated, my wallet could afford it. I'll get even with you Recon!
You can do them, just have to be really smart about it. Well...as smart as us noobs can be.

I disagree, hop in a shuttle and blitz Recon 1 and 2. no need to hang around for the combat.

I started out with tapping along on some lvl 2-3-4s with corpmember, while i trained for a drake, when i had like 700k-800k SP, i fitted it up with mostly T1 stuff, and heavy missiles, 4 hardners (2xpassive,2xactive) and filled up my cargo with missiles, and i soloed "Angel Extravaganza". (bonus room possible too, but need alot of warpout), so normally i skipped that room ;)
And yes, BS took ages to kill, but i still had fun :) Time 3,5 hours i guess
Msg if u want my fit, or advises :)
