Edited by: Zero None on 04/08/2011 20:57:07 Edited by: Zero None on 04/08/2011 20:56:32 Noob question about mining. Can i start mining something in high sec that dosent require a lot of micromanagment...(from what i understand, ice mining does not require a lot of attention)...and play another game in the mean time (in my case World of Tanks) and check back every 10-15 minutes or so, or am i just setting myself up to be constantly suicide ganked?

Do you have multiple monitors? How fast can you switch out of the other game and into Eve?
I rarely get molested while mining (most of them are noobships shooting at my orca) but your mileage may vary.

Edited by: Zero None on 04/08/2011 21:15:41 I have a single monitor. It takes me 3 seconds to alt tab into eve and another 3 seconds to alt tab into WoT, so add those 2. I can run eve on max settings without a sigle snag, and the same with WoT, so i dont think performance is going to be an issue if i turn down the settings on both.

I did this all the time when I did mining. You're not safe anywhere, really, but I could afford the loss of a few hulks here and there. You're still running a risk of getting ganked. To be honest, even if you're not playing another game and paying attention while you're mining (lol), you'll STILL be ganked if someone is determined to get some lulz.

But how often will it happen if say...i mine for about 20 hours a week (that is, being windowed out and doing something else on the computer)

While you are mining?
Shit son, that's how most people play Eve on a daily basis.
Eve is really just an elaborate lobby for WoT. Sarcasm - Because i'm too far away to strangle you. |

I do a similar thing with a Passive Gila and level 4 Security missions. You may want to try that if mining isn't good enough.

You shouldn't have any issues whatsoever AFK mining in highsec, almost everyone mines atleast semi-AFK unless you're in an op and actively chatting with people. Now, if you go Alt-Tab mining in a WH, you deserve to loose your mining ship (true story, it happened to someone I know), but highsec AFK mining isn't any more dangerous than if you were watching it the whole time.

OK, but what should I be AFK mining in high sec? Ice or Veldspar?

All of the numbers are there in-game for you. There's no reason you can't do the math yourself and see what's worth more to you.
Notice, asking for things that aren't info in-game (how dangerous is it to mine AFK in highsec?) is great since other people have experience, asking someone to do the math for you (what should I mine?) is just lazy.

You will get more isk per hour with veldspar, but will need to check the miners every 3 minutes or so to see if the roid popped. With ice you only need check when the hold is full.
The recent war on bots as brought up the ice price so its only say 20% - 30% less isk per hour than roids.
As for danger, you are in a bit more with ice as most bot hunters look to ice mining first. As you are afk alot, you tend to look like a bot. When you do check the game, see who is around, and don't be afraid to talk to them in local as that's the best way to show you are not a bot.

There is no "safe" in Eve without being docked up in an NPC station or logged off. Find an ice belt system that you would like to mine in, and then use dotlan statistics to get an idea of how much happens in the belt on average. Set aside an hour or so for a few days to actively mine ice. Stay focused in Eve, and simply check the profile of every user that is in system, or comes through. Pay attention to their sec status, take a look at their killboard stats on battleclinic (which may or may not be accurate, but still is a source of info). When you've done that for a bit, you should then be able to make an informed decision on whether or not you can AFK ice mine without too much trouble. Anti-bot people *do* like ice belts, because of the probability of finding a bot. If you are AFK or playing WoT and they ping you in Local or message you, not responding could be a problem.
While I don't assume you to be stupid, you stated you are new, I'm going to guess you may be ignorant of some things. With that in mind, I am hoping you posted this message on an alt.
Just $0.02 from a paranoid miner. :)

It can be done; I do housework. You are taking a risk..what in eve is not a risk? Ice barges are notoriously easy to suicide gank so be cautious.

If it makes you feel any better. I intentionally target people who aren't bot mining, so if you don't respond you'll be just fine. Bots can't cry, you see.

Veld is more profitable than Ice in high-sec. But ice would obviously be easier to mine while afk. On the other hand you are far more likely to be suicide ganked in an ice field.

I'm confused... Won't the OP's cargohold fill up faster than 15 minutes? He'd have to alt+tab back into EVE smething like 7 times an hour, and warp down to dock, unload, warp ack, and resume sucking on roids.
If at all possible, get a 2nd account and train that character to fly an Orca. Then dump the ore directly into the Orca's corporate hangar (this requires both characters to be in the same corp, AFAIK).

Personally, I recommend the "Ice Mining Workout". You don't have to alt-tab away, so you can actually keep an eye on the screen while getting in a set during each cycle and plenty of rest between sets.

You can be in the same fleet and drop it in the Orca if the Orca turns on Allow Fleet Usage in the configuration menu. You just cannot take that ORE/ICE back.
EVE really is the best game to play while doing something else.
