I'm thinking about starting an alt on a 2nd account to use for invention and industry. I mainly fly things like logistics and other T2 cruisers, which can be expensive for me.
So, would it be worth spending time and effort to invent and build various T2 cruisers for mainly personal use? Like, how much isk would I even be saving? 5 mil per ship? Or more (I really have no idea how invention and stuff works)? And how long does it take to train the skills to be a decent inventor/builder? |

Let me put it this way I vaguely looked into it. It looks like it's one big annoying headache if you want it for personal use. As I heard making the BPC's are chnace based if I remember properly, so building for personal use can be a money sink. Than building the ships/modules arn't always profitable from what I heard as well. So really your better off using that second account to make you isk by mining or something else that doesn't require much input for printing isk.

If you can get to the point of producing your own T2 ships...why not sell them and make a profit? That profit then becomes the isk for those ships you want and more. That is a lot of trouble for just one or two ships also. Just sayin.

Is it worth it for you to make a character to produce the stuff you need? No
you will only save a tiny bit of money most likely much less then 5 mil / ship. Several times a week i see people selling there drakes for less then the material cost; main reason being is they think there minerals are free when they mine.
However if you want to get into that profession then you can make lots of stuff and make the moneyz.

t2 bs the only real money saver for this idea. They are marked up nice on market.... Now if blowing up widows that much...you got issues.
Frigs and cruisers...usually jita will be the same if not cheaper.
Might be good for personal t2 ammo. Been a few place I'd have my indy make ammo, get it jf'd somehow out and cheaper than local market some places in 0.0. Ammo bpc makes 50K ammo. Ammo is fun...load up you ship with t2 ammo for a long op...die early and go yeah....4000 rounds wasted in the hold :( lol.
Now passive isk maker jsut selling in empire markets...nice way to earn a living done right.

T2 ships take quite a bit of work, and the margins really aren't that large, so you probably won't save more than 10% at best. T2 Ammo, on the other hand, is not all that hard to produce and is generally sold at fairly high margins.

Edited by: Echo Mande on 10/08/2011 09:37:20 I'm not sure if ship invention alone will net you that much of a profit (or save you ISK). Inventing/building modules and ammo for profit can be worth it but you'll have to look around to see what's profitable. If you do go that direction you may find that creating a second alt as copy slave (6-10 lab slots, science, research & metallurgy at 4) to create BPCs is a good idea, as is having 5 or so T1 BPOs of whatever it is you're copying. If you don't cut too many corners (i.e. limit your science skills) you're looking at a 4-5 month training schedule though.
A tip: always run cost price calculations before buying datacores and again before buying materials. Include all costs in your calculations.
A second tip: don't bother trying to invent laser crystals.
A third tip: Get a freighter or plan on getting one.
A last tip: don't buy T2 components or RAM off the market unless there's no other option. Get a BPO set, research it (5/20 for T2 components; 40/20 for RAM), buy raw materials and build your own as needed.

Sometimes I really do wonder how many people honestly believe that the minerals they mine are free, and how many people just simply do the homework to find out if they are profiting or taking a loss on a manufacturing job... ----------

I can say for sure that people in my old alliance thought of mined minerals as free, but my corp's primary manufacturers definitely check prices multiple times, to make sure they are making money, counting mineral prices.

It can be worth while to make your own mods, but ships have very low profit margins unless you have access to the needed moon goo reactions. The bulk of the cost of producing T2 ships comes from moon goo and the big power blocks have that all wrapped up.
