I know I know, we aren't supposed to discuss politics.
And we aren't supposed to discuss moderation.
So I still have to ask... WHY?
What is it about political discussion that is so taboo in out of pod? Is it that it attracts too many people? Too many page hits? Unwanted intelligent (well, sometimes) discussion?
I would think rule #1 of a game forum is attract people to the game forum. Worst case scenario people might be enticed into playing your game.
It's not an overly unreasonable question. Surely there is a reason?

See the thread on two murder cases, and the right of someone to kill someone else. A fantastically optimistic opinion is that such a thread represents the best-case scenario for any political thread (where <1% of all political threads reach its levels of peaceful comments and agreement). ____________________________________________ [center]Due to the overwhelming number of people with "Red" in there name, I'd consider it required that everyone call me LOMPOCUS from now on![/c |

Same reason you're not suppose to speak of it during a dinner conversation with guests.

They say it's because people end up angry at each other, but this is the internet, people end up angry at each other over who is best, mario or sonic.

I consider it a form of sport. They actually allow quite a few political discussions on here, or generally allow them to burn themselves out. A group of us enjoy testing their limits, see what gets locked, what gets you banned.
Generally they are more tolerant if its topical (London riots/Osama Bin laden killing). The self-defense thread isn't really all that political - doesn't involve parties and political figures. It does provoke strong opinion, but probably could be considered abstract enough to not get the lock. Discussing law or ethics isn't automatically political, you know.
You can get away with quite a bit of Obama bashing, as long as you don't dedicate a new thread to it, and stick to hijacking other threads.
We discovered a few other things:
Bad ideas: Rabble rousing over terrorism/Muslims. Mentioning Israel, even in a neutral context.
REALLY Bad ideas: Naming a new character after a certain Norwegian mass murderer, give him blond hair and a smile, then start posting on the 'so sorry Norway' threads.

Edited by: Florio on 14/08/2011 17:43:08 Discussions on anything vaguely political, racial or to do with religion tend to end up in fisticuffs, as these are topics which the majority of people seem not to be able to be rational about. And it's a shame, as they're the most interesting things in the world in my opinion.
For examples, take a look at UK's Newsnight. Several months ago it had Nick Griffin on it (leader of a far right national party in the UK who hold racist views) but his opponents in the discussion could only launch personal attacks rather than rationally pick apart his policies and viewpoints. Thus his actual standpoint was not challenged and people actually felt sorry for him due to all the nasty and unhelpful ad-hominem attacks.
More recently, Newsnight held a discussion with historian David Starkey, who stated that the London riots were partly possible because of a particular culture originating from the black community but now held by people of all colour. Mr Starkey didn't say it was all black cultures, or black culture in general, but a particular culture. Has this view been picked apart rationally? After all it is either true or not. Perhaps it is a culture that has never been a black culture. Perhaps it did not originate from the black community, but from the white community or the orange/purple/etc one. Perhaps the riots were nothing to do with that culture. Were these rational arguments against Starkey made? No: depressingly no such rational arguments were made - Starkey was just called racist, subject to ad hominem attacks, and it was proclaimed by various ranters hoping to get votes/readers from the left that his career was over.
It seems to be some people's agenda to shout and rant at the merest hint of a viewpoint opposite to their own, without paying heed to the truth or to the possibility that their own view may be incorrect or in need of tweaking.
In none of these cases were rational arguments made, and that's fairly typical of these kind of things, which is probably why it is best to limit them on a gaming forum.

It attracts the utterly stupid and the incessant troll types and turns into nothing but a flame war.

Because what passes for mods here can't be bothered to, you know - moderate such discussions. That's too hard! Thumbsuckers.
