I promised to get this online earlier, but finally-- here it is. Apologies to those who saw this premiere from Nashville on EVE Radio but experienced stuttering with the stream. Also, apologies to those who saw me attempt to say a couple of words beforehand; I'm terrible with a mic and worse after a couple of beers.
I've not got much to say; this is just my newest EVE fan video. CCP has been incredibly kind and has offered me use of their Jessica software. They have been unbelievably helpful. CCP Prawn in particular has been quite awesome with his technical assistance. Say what you wish about the company, but I'm sitting around in Nashville at a meet with a few of them right now, along with some 50 players. We have had an amazing time. CCP prove time and time again they are one of the most passionate game companies in the world, particularly regarding their community. If you do not believe this, please go to an EVE meet like Vegas, Nashville, or Fanfest and see it for yourself.
I'm a film major, so I appreciate feedback on every level. I only ask that you keep your feedback constructive and not flame-y (even if you're not impressed -- tell me why!). Either way, I hope it's worth your bandwidth!
Right-click, save-as (after passing the intermediate EVE website warning) MP4; H.264, highest quality SRT subtitle file for MP4, place in same folder as video WMV; WMV9, medium quality YouTube soon (when I can get the file re-uploaded)

Once again you demonstrate a ridiculously scary grasp of cinematography and post-production.
Clever camera work, surprisingly good voice acting and crisp sound synchronization.
I wouldn't have been surprised if someone had told me this was an official CCP trailer.
Really awesome!! :D

I am not sure what I just saw.
Can't say that I liked it compared to your earlier work, I thought it was inconsistent because it takes place in null and not in w-space, is never explained why Sleepers would ever leave their sanctuary and basically roam? So, in that sense I think Sanshas would have worked better as the out-of-nowhere-bogeyman.

High quality work for sure, I actually had the hairs on my neck stand up at one point! A few small criticisms:
The pacing seems a bit slow, and a bit off though. It started to get a bit convoluted with the fleet warping in, then the gank fleet coming in, then sleepers, then another fleet, then sleepers again.
Also there wasn't the right emotion in the voice actors when the sh*t hit the fan. It was like it was an everyday thing, and not an "epic betrayal" or "ZOMG we're all gonna die!"
A little mortality and fear would have been a nice touch.
Still loved it though, these are just minor things and I feel it was awesome!

Always liked your work, but this time it lacked that 'Kyoko Sakoda' feel to it.
V.high quality as always - but I feel as if you stuck to a storyboard and didn't experiment enough.
After watching it 4 times now, I think it needed more establishing shots for each time something new appeared on the battlefield, it would've made it feel less discombobulated with the audio.

Edited by: Kyoko Sakoda on 15/08/2011 03:55:54 I uploaded the file onto YouTube and FMP. I apologize for not having it there before, but we had some 40 inebriated geeks roaming in T1 cruisers on Saturday and there really was no bandwidth for uploading then, nor when EVE Radio was broadcasting.
I expected a mixed reaction to the video because I toyed a lot with style. Keep the feedback coming; it really is appreciated. I just want to respond to a couple:

Hi AK <3! I'm not sure what you mean by 'Kyoko Sakoda'-feel, please feel free to reply again or EVEMail me to clarify. I did keep to a strict script and storyboard (stick figures). I did experiment a good deal, but I think I understand what you're saying. Over the last 18ish months I've learned more and more about the conventions of cinema, and maybe that's what makes it feel constrained or less exploratory. I felt like I needed to apply what I had learned over the last year and a half.
As for the establishing shots I was afraid of that because I got that same feedback before release. In particular the very beginning of Sleeper action is a bit confused. Now, I could say it was intentional because I want the viewer to feel confusion and panic, but I'd be lying. That was just a bit of sloppy work that I didn't revisit because of exams.
Thanks for the feedback! Oh, and 'discombobulated' is my new favorite word!
Originally by: Phantom Slave The pacing seems a bit slow, and a bit off though. It started to get a bit convoluted with the fleet warping in, then the gank fleet coming in, then sleepers, then another fleet, then sleepers again.
Slow was intentional, but I agree it isn't everyone's style. I apologize if the fleets warping in and out perhaps needed more clarity. That goes a bit back to AK's point about establishing shots above.
Originally by: Phantom Slave Also there wasn't the right emotion in the voice actors when the sh*t hit the fan. It was like it was an everyday thing, and not an "epic betrayal" or "ZOMG we're all gonna die!"
We got this on Future Proof too (although that scream by Ellington was amazing). I opted not to have screams because they turned out bad in editing, not in recording. Considering these were all amateur voice actors I think they did a good enough job, but noted.
Cheers!

If I had used Sansha it would have just been a second Incursion trailer, and I wanted to also play off the capsuleer characters. But it very much takes place in w-space; the nebula and establishing shot at the very beginning explain this as best I know how.

Excellent video. My only criticism is for the audio. When the combat started it really should have ramped up. There was a disconnect between the emotion the audio presented and the images I was seeing.
That aside, fantastic work. I'm jealous.
