I'm having a bit of a trouble searching for sci-fi movies made, say, 2007-08 and after. I mean real, hard core sci-fi. Here's what I'm constantly getting while I search (these are NOT what I'm looking for):
- comics adaptations ... I've seen a couple of them in the past (Ghost Rider, X-Men,...). Didn't find them interesting enough as I don't like comics.
- "end of the world" bandwagon ... OK, it was interesting the first couple of times I saw a movie with a plot centered around the end of the world theme, but it's not any more. I keep watching some of them hoping that I'll see some fresh approach, but that's not happening. The last movie of that type that I've enjoyed watching is "Knowing" and that's just because I've watched it at my friend's place on his really expensive home theater system. And I watched "Skyline" just because I've seen a familiar scene in the trailer that looked awfully similar to Sansha incursions
- disease apocalypse ... simply not fun (apparently, IMDB list these movies as sci-fi for some reason)
- rip-offs of the famous originals ... They are rarely as good as the original because of the simple fact that you already know what is going on. It's like I've seen the spoiler already. "The Adjustment Bureau" is the most recent one. I mean, come on... If you're going to borrow the idea from "Dark City", at least add something to it other than a love story. They couldn't even make the trailer soundtrack, so they took it from "Ink" (and they took it from "Sunshine" and so on)
- "Call of Duty" in space ... shooting from big lazors or at little green guys/bugs/random goo covered creatures isn't really different from any other war movie. Although, I have enjoyed some war movies, like "Apocalypse Now" (in fact, that one is one of the top ones on my list).
So, what I'm looking for then? Well, something like "Matrix", "Inception", "Dark City", "Johnny Mnemonic" ("Neuromancer" has been repeatedly postponed and I don't know when or if it's going to come out), "The Thirteenth Floor" (tough luck for them to release it the same year as Matrix), "The Island" and so on. Even half-comedies like "The Fifth Element" and "Independence Day" can do. You know,... something original, or an adaptation of some good book (not comic book), or with enough humor to cover up the lack of fresh ideas.
Any suggestions?
P.S. I'm not a fan of Star Trek or Star Wars. I'm that weird guy that liked Farscape

Well you obviously have an open mind.
Taking into account all the guidelines you've given us, and not including the movies you've already named, I've compiled the following list of movies you will like:

Go watch 'The Sphere' while I come up with a good list. EDIT-- Do NOT watch the trailer for 'The Sphere'.

- "Moon" - never heard of it, will watch - "The Man From Earth" - interesting idea, will watch - I have a specific taste. That's why the only MMO I can play is EVE . - If you are talking about "The Sphere" with Dustin Hoffman, it's not that new (yes it's a good movie) |

the last few years don't stand out as being overly kind to sci fi as I recall at this moment. you might want to step back in time a few more years and hit or rehit some classics.

Watched 9 last night.
Absolutly brilliant. 2009 film no idea how I missed it coming out I usually make sure I catch anything tim burton has a hand in at the cinema. Which makes me think maybe it never went to Cinema which again would be pretty strange for a Tim burton movie.
Maybe I slept though 2009.
it's a really sad post-apocalyptic story. Think wall-e but with friends and a terrible looming threat left over after a genocidal robot war.
How can it not be good right

How about the original Stargate Movie? It was released in 1994 but I think it has aged quite well. And Independence Day was originally going to be a sequel to it.
It also has Kurt Russell.
Serenity perhaps? It's actually a film to finish of the series but it stands on it's own too. And I've not met anyone who's watched Firefly who didn't enjoy it.

Edited by: GreasyCarl Semah on 15/08/2011 16:11:03 I think limiting it to newer movies is your problem, hollywood ran out of ideas long ago.
You have also narrowed the qualifications quite a bit. How about Donnie Darko? It is old and it is bizarre but it isn't about the end of the world or spacemen going PEW PEW.

Cargo is pretty good and atmospheric movie.
Also in case you missed it, take a look at Solaris... there is 2002. remake but it's not nearly as good as (ancient) original.

Now, now, that's a bit of a stretch to call it a "ripoff". Sure, a part of the premise (unexplainable powers controlling the protagonist's life, borrowing some of that power to get out of the situation, water as weak point) is somewhat similar, but, damn, if THAT much of a similarity bothers you, I doubt you'll have a chance to enjoy just about any movie, period. It's like what's described here happened to you without actually going there too often or too long yet (or maybe you did, and in that case, it might be explainable). Still, even there, the two movies tAB, DC) barely share a handful of commonalities.
Yes, there's a lot of repetition and "ripping some stuff off", but then again, how many truly ORIGINAL ideas can you pull out of a hat in this day and age ? Even Avatar can be seen from that viewpoint as a "rip-off" of Fern Gully, Dances with Wolves, Pocahontas and a few others. What matters is the way the things are presented, if sufficiently enjoyable.
P.S. I have to agree, while relatively well put together, I didn't enjoy "The Adjustment Bureau" as much as I thought I would from the trailers. But the similarities to "Dark City" never crossed my mind, and I do count "Dark City" as one of the movies I did like quite a bit.

I'm the weird person that liked Star Wars, Star Trek, Farscape, Babylon 5, Firefly, Stargate (all of them, yes, even the "meh" last one), Lexx, Andromeda (but only the first 3, maybe a bit of the 4th season, the 5th one was crap), SeaQuest (the later ones were a tad bit weird), The 4400, Sliders, even Quantum Leap and a host of others even less known Sci-Fi or even just barely Sci-Fi series (with more fiction than science, or even mostly fantasy), to name just a few that already ended, never-mind some of the ongoing ones (Fringe, Eureka, Warehouse 13, Doctor Who, Torchwood, etc).

It's hard to say ...
My personal tastes fall more in line with Akita's though not quiet as broad.
The only thing that's coming to mind that hasn't been mentioned (which came out within the last few years) was Southland Tales - which sucked. This is the classic story of Hollywood taking some eccentric director to heart because he made something odd - Donny Darko - then giving him enough money to hang himself with. Of course - the guy produces some gigantic opus ... better suited to a mini-series than a movie - then has to cut it to pieces to get it down to a manageable length (for release in theaters) and ruins anything he might have had. As is ... it's just a chaotic mess.
For old ones - see Dark Star if you get a chance. It's a cheap movie made by some college kids (John Carpenter) but it's really good ... if you can get past the cheapness.

If you like to read, there's even better options...
Spinward Fringe series (first book for free on Amazon) Anything by Peter F. Hamilton Anything by Iain M. Banks (the Culture series is AWESOME hard scifi) Anything by Alistair Reynolds
Sadly, the amount of good scifi movies is FAR FAR FAAAAAAAAR smaller than the amount of horrible (understatement) scifi movies. When it comes to books, you have a way more good options...and many are available as audio books.

Edited by: The Offerer on 16/08/2011 20:56:46 Wow... Some really good recommendations here. Thanks and lets keep the discussion going.
Many of the older movies I've seen, since I watch a lot of them whenever there's a chance. That's why I was asking for some new stuff, because there are more movies made each year.
Now, about "rip-offs" and "Dark City". Dark City per se is not a film that is great in all aspects, but it had one fresh idea that was unknown to me until then. The whole movie or book is worth watching/reading just because it has that one moment that can change your perception of reality. If that moment is spoiled because it was borrowed from another famous movie, there must be something really great in it that overshadows the original idea for it to become great (my personal opinion). That doesn't mean that "The Adjustment Bureau" does not have its own qualities, but it lacks a good "moment of truth". I'll watch it again to see if I've missed something, since it's not a bad movie, but what I'm really seeking are those "moments".
The perfect examples of those moments can be found in many good films even out of the SF genre (I won't say the spoilers, don't worry): - Matrix - actually a couple of them are present through all parts of the trilogy, witch makes it so great - V for Vendetta - the Shadow Gallery scene was simply brilliant - Gin gwai (Korean thriller/horror) - the perfect example of one scene making the whole film worth watching - Neuromancer (the book) - Gibson will spin your mind through the whole book and confuse you as much as he can only to reveal the grand idea at the end. Too bad he blew it with the Count Zero and Mona Lisa Overdrive. - The Thirteenth Floor - one fantastic perception changing moment made that movie great. Too bad it was shadowed by Matrix which was also released in 1999.

Oh, I can get past cheapness . One of the best and emotionally deepest films I've ever seen is Ink - an independent production almost if not completely funded by the authors.
To really enjoy the film it either must have that "moment" or a good and unique atmosphere (like Gattaca, for example or "The Time Machine"). That's just my taste
