Been playing the game for a few weeks now, and my biggest question pertains to "Standing". I've read that I need a 6.5 for trader-like characters to avoid station cuts when refining, and I need a standing of 8 in order to install Jump clones, along with other things. Being that I'm interested in both the market and PvP, (considering multiple accounts), standing seems important.
But for the love of quasars, is there no better way to increase standing than doing missions that reward as low as 0.01 and as much as 0.05? At this rate it'll be a thousand missions until I have an 8.0 standing with a single corp.
If that's what it takes, then that's what it takes, but I wanted to be sure I wasn't missing something (other than the social skills).
Any insight appreciated.

You need a 8.0 standing if you intend to get your JC via NPC stations. There are other ways to do so. Trading is more about sales tax then refining rates.
If you know what you are doing (needs quite a few SP too) you can get a standing of 6.6 within a week. The trick is to pick an agent that will send you to a storyline agent of the same corp. A lvl4 storyline kill mission gives you 20%.
You will most likely be faster with lvl3 missions because there are more blitzable lvl3s then lvl4s. -- IF YOU PLAY WITH SONY YOU PLAY WITH ******! |

Higher level missions will give slightly higher standing gains, so it will speed up when you move to level 2 (3, 4) missions.
Also, every 16 mission you run for a corporation you will get a "storyline mission" which will boost both your faction standing and your corp standing in bigger steps.
It's still definitly a heavy grind, but not as bad as it seems to you at the moment.

This section of the "earning ISK" guide thread should help a bit. TL;DR : train Social and Connections to at least L3 each (preferably L5 social and L4 connections) to maximize gains AND gain access to higher level agents much faster ; always run the highest level of missions you can comfortably run with your current ship/skills
Also, you could always run the tutorials and career funnel missions, they give decent FACTION standings for minimal effort (and are doable with a couple of days' worth of skill training). A bit later on, you could try the COSMOS missions, or maybe the datacenter tag turn-in missions (those are a pain to get normally, and tags are quite expensive), but they also grant some pretty nice faction standing gains. Some COSMOS info (dig around on the site linked in that post for rest of races and more details). Faction standing gains are usually quite difficult to get, but they have quite a few benefits, one of them being to grant access to ALL "regular" agents in ALL NPC corps belonging to that particular faction.
You can take a "shortcut" to high NPC corp (and an even shorter one to NPC agent) standings by fleeting up with somebody that runs a higher level mission (for an agent you can't get access to) and is about to turn it in, and - for a price (be it now or a bit later on, or maybe you can find somebody willing to do a tad bit of charity) - you can ask him to split the mission rewards (that INCLUDES standings with agent/corp). A handful of "good" L4 missions for a single L4 combat agent (and you having Connections L4 trained) split that way can already open up access to that particular agent, or about a dozen "mixed bag" ones should also just about do it. You will only have access to that particular L4 agent early on (agent standing grows usually about two times faster than corp standing), but as you run more missions, rest of the L4 agents should open up. I can remember having a corpmate that could access one L4 agent because I "boosted" him that way, but he still didn't have access to most of the L3 agents of that corp (that was back when agents had variable quality, so standings requirements were a bit odder).

It also hurts the standings with the rivaling faction. It's better not to do them unless you know you'll never go in that part of space.

Just a quick comment on this, you do gain and lose standings, yes, but you only lose half of what you gain. For example, say you gain 2% from a storyline for gallente, you would only lose 1% for caldari. In this manner, you can gain standings overall by trading off storylines for opposing factions.

Only up to a certain level, because gains are a percent of distance to +10 but losses a percent of distance to -10, so the higher your standings are, the harder they are to increase and the easier they are to lose. Getting +3 base with all empires takes a long time but not insanely long, geting slightly above +4 base with all is excruciatingly grueling, but getting +5 base with all is impossible by just running storylines. You can get +5 base (or even higher) with all empires, but ONLY if you stop running ANY regular "storyline" (or other "important") missions as soon as you hit the "unstable equilibrium point" and only run the Epic mission arcs from that moment on, which (allegedly) do NOT grant any derived standings (neither gains NOR losses). _

You can get a jumpclone quicker by using EACS.
Train Infomorph Psychology. Join EACS corp. Make jumpclones. Leave corp.

I just want to emphasize what Akita said about training Social and Connections up. I am increasing my standing with my refining/hauling character and the difference since leveling up these two skills up to level 4 (which doesn't take very long) is dramatic. It is still a bit tedious if you are not crazy about missions but this makes it much faster.
