I've been wanting to get into PI as I for some reason find myself interested in it. Naturally I want to make a profit, so I'm taking two chars and training the PI skills so that I can cover 10 planets and all that jazz.
My plan is to sneak around in low-sec (Pirate's be warned. This is not the character doing said PI) and I'm wondering.. Can I make it to advanced commodities using 2 chars?
Tips, layouts for planets, etc etc very welcome, not expecting you to give me your bussiness secret, just help a freshman out! (not the basic 101's, know that )

Edited by: Dalloway Jones on 17/08/2011 05:08:51 PI isn't hard it is just a bit time consuming and tedious. When you are new it is very easy to screw things up and build things you don't need or place buildings poorly and have to scrap it which wastes money. It is also very easy to miss a step in the tons of clicking you will need to do so before you close a planet window always double check to make sure your extractors are extracting.
It went from being a pleasant passive pastime when I was doing it on one character to a bit of a headache now that I am doing with 3 characters and making T4 items. I am thinking of setting my extractors to a 3 or 4 day cycle which will make me much less money but be less annoying. If you are going to do it in low sec that adds a whole new headache to the mix (currently I just have one planet in low sec and it definitely is a huge difference the amounts that are extracted but I am still not sure I want to jump in with all my planets).
Anyway definitely do your homework before hand. If you dig around here you will find a few helpful posts including one guy that made some flow charts that lay out all the ingredients needed for T4 products and another guy that looks at the profit and loss of each product. Have a look at that because a lot of higher end PI stuff is not worth making because the lower end ingredients would sell for more. Don't forget the import/export taxes and the vast amounts of T0 needed to make a single T4 item. It is mind boggling. Before you go crazy you may want to just try something simple that sells well like Rocket Fuel until you get the hang of it.

Oh yeah I'm doing my homework right now.
Read through all the sticky's and got 2 "sample" planets going right now making simple things to get the hang of stuff (Oxygen and enriched uranium, hurr hurr :3)
in a week or so I think I'll try to move on to getting a third planet into the dance and aim for P3 commodities, but still keep it simple, like all in one planet kinda deal if that proves possible (Though I doubt it)
In time when I get the hang of it though I wonder if I would be allowed to live in 0.0 and benefit from the planets there.. But I cant see that happening, maybe a wormhole..

Wormhole living isn't for everyone, but there is good money to made at PI in a wormhole. If you get into a good corp with a substantial POS, you can do all your work from the safety of the POS's shields once you install the command center. And the PI output in a wormhole system is at least equal to 0.0 space. Just have to be careful and not get ganked while picking up your product... ;)
