If you absolutely must invest your hard earned mining isk into an MD venture, be sure & read thru the comprehensive guide outlined below.
The process will take around 5 minutes to complete,
Step One Read the OP. Read the opening statement properly word for word, be sure the terms suit your needs. Look for irregularities in numbers, reasons etc.
Step TwoKnow your fund manager - Copy the person's name/corp & eve search it, here is an example - Read all the posts made, try and find any patterns with alt's posting/bumping sales threads - only made 1 post?---> See step 7 - If looking into history of 3rd party, do they have a sell order thread? have they been used for any other offerings?
Step Three Collateral, or none
Is it collateralized? = yes. - Who is holding the collateral? --> see step 2 - What is it? - Can it be accessed? (NPC station) - Are they willing to let you hold it? - have they done any previous Bonds of similar size? - Goto ---> Step 6
Is it collateralized = no. - Have they Done any previous uncollateralized bonds? - Are they willing to give their API keys over for you to have a look thru market transactions/ Assets -Are they willing to go thru an "audit" *If yes --->Step 2 on auditor *If No, why not? - How many accounts do they have? - What is their employment history? * found a scam corp u think?--> See step 2 - Are they willing to partially collateralize it? - How are they handling trolls? - Have any random, no faced alts pledged any isk towards it? ---> step 2 combined search with OP's name - Are they in an NPC corp? --- step 7 - do they have a highsec pos? - have they mentioned "rep" building my "rep" anywhere in OP? ---> Step 7 - Have they been bumping their own thread for 7 weeks trying to fill the bond?--> Step 7
Step Four Deciding what to invest in... IPO? Bond? - Don't be a sheep, just coz 20 other ppl are investing & you may miss the boat. - Does the IPO have a well laid out plan, has told exactly what they are doing with the isk & have done this type of production in the past?
Step FiveDeciding what to spend - Can you afford to lose it? - Why do you want to make 5% on such a small amount? - Do you really not need the funds?
Step Six - Double check the character name before you send isk - Add them as a contact, add them to watchlist & send notification, so they add you back. - Send isk with the correct reason code. - cross fingers
Step Seven - Troll the thread with your reasons why you wont invest.

Step Two - Expanded Eve Search is a very powerful tool, but there are some things that people can overlook when using it to research a character. I'm going to go over two of the things most people don't know about it. Simply searching a name doesn't always turn up the most useful information. What if we want to narrow it down?
Stats The stats page for a user can lead in many different directions. It also allows you to narrow down your search of a particular person to just a single subforum. For this example I will be using Jerry Pepridge, since he was the topic starter.
History While most people may have been aware of the stats page for users, the history page often goes unnoticed. Most people will assume (correctly) that it's easier and more accurate to determine corporate history in-game, however this is not why it's useful. The history page has links to all the corporations that character has ever been in, and every corporation also has a history of all it's members that have ever posted.
This can be useful in finding alts, or connections between players. For this exaple I will be using Stealing Honest. Notice the link to his corporation, Stealing Honest Speculation Group LLC. There is another character that has posted while a part of this corporation (Zia Pow) and following that character's stats and history can reveal more information. In this instance we already knew that this character was an alt, but normally this method of research would indicate that searching for a connection between those two characters in their posts would be warranted. |

Dear Jirry Come-ratery,
I applaud your efforts to keep MD Scam-Free(tm). However, I think I can reduce your needlessly complicated formula to just one simple step:
Step One: Don't ****ing invest in MD.

Because EVE Search isn't run by CCP. Its hosted by Chribba (closest thing to being hosted by CCP, IMO).

Self quoting is a bit egotistical but here are some notes on investing that I posted a few months ago:
1. Get as much basic information as possible to build a risk profile. This in no way provides solid protection as people can certainly act against expectations but it does provide a guide as to when you might expect someone not to bother with scamming. The basic info I always want includes a) current outstanding unsecured debt; b) previous highest unsecured debt; c) earning history and potential, including current NAV; d) degree of activity. With this data you can see that if, for example, someone has held 20bil unsecured for 6 months, cleared that debt and then launched a new bond for 10bil then they are unlikely to be following a masterplan that will involve scamming that 10bil. It is important, however, to get a commitment, where possible, that additional funds won't be raised beyond a certain level or the 10bil could rapidly become part of a 100bil debt that may fit better into a rational masterplan.
Earning history and potential is also useful but by no means definitive. Someone who can earn 10bil a week and has actively engaged with the MD community for months is unlikely to be following a masterplan that culminates in scamming 10bil. Of course they may do so for the laughs but that is a different issue (see below). Degree of activity is worth bearing in mind as it may cast a risk profile based on the previous data into doubt. Whilst someone might not build a masterplan to scam 10bil after already not taking the opportunity to scam 20bil be aware that priorities may change over time. There may also be a desire not to screw certain old investors but to suck in new ones (see, for instance BB's decision to refinance a bunch of old debts immediately prior to scamming).
All this data can initially be asked for from the person you are thinking about investing in but you then have to trust them that the data they give you is true. Whenever possible get a third party that you trust to confirm this information via an audit or fact check. This in no way makes the data absolutely certain but improves the chances of not being misled.
2. Be very wary about investing in people that appear to be slightly unstable, erratic or eccentric, no matter how much you like them or respect them. Unstable, flighty and changeable personality types may be lovely people (or *******s) but the additional uncertainty involved will always make an investment more of a gamble.
NEVER invest in people that are contemptuous towards their investors/potential investors or who take pleasure in the suffering, inconvenience or pain of others. If someone values putting other people in positions of distress they may well end up deciding that distressed investors are worth more than ongoing business relationships.
3. Make sure you get a decent return for your risk. Acknowledge your own fallibility and ask yourself how often you would expect to be wrong. If you think something like BMBE looks like a pretty good bet, ask yourself whether you would be surprised if analogously good bets failed defaulted or scammed once in a year, two years, three years, etc à So, if it wouldn't surprise you if you took three years off eve and came back to find that at least one person you trust as much as BMBE or Grendell or Chribba or Darkness had scammed then it would probably be a good idea to only invest in such people if you can get an interest rate according to which one successful investment would at least balance out a failure (so roughly 3%). Obviously this is a non-rigorous rule of thumb.
4. Never be afraid to pull an investment if new information or behaviour makes you nervous.
These have served me pretty well as guidelines for investing but it's obviously not an exact science. As a final note, all this applies to unsecured debt. But in the case of secured loans remember that if you are not holding the collateral yourself.

Free bump.
It also should be mentioned that only because there is 100% collateral doesn't mean you'll have your iskies back. Someone might just want to "sell" his stuff by this means. Also keep on mind the stability of the worth of the collateral: will it be worth significantly less when the bond/IPO ends?

Thanks!
The links are there, they're just not the easiest things to find. Since it seems people are generally interested in knowing more about Eve Search, I'll go ahead and cover more of it. This time for the example, I'll be using this very thread.
Eve Search Thread Page - Dissected
There are coincidentally seven useful types of links for every thread displayed on Eve Search. Let's look at them.
Thread Statistcs Every single individual thread has it's own statistics associated with it. This can be found at the very top of the thread in a grey bar above the first post. Example.
CCP Posts In huge threads like blog posts, news items, or even the occasional dead horse you can narrow down the responses to just CCP. This is located in the same grey bar as the statistcs. Example (Dead Horse).
Search by Author Every single post in a thread has a picture of the author, and under that is the author's name. Clicking the name will search for all posts made by that person.
Go to Original Post Below the picture of the author and their name you will find four icons that are actually links. The first link on the first row takes you back to the official Eve Forums where the post originated. This is often useful because Eve Search maintains the original post, prior to any edits. Going back to the official forums will allow you read the newest version of that post if there is one.
History for Author The second link on the first row takes you to the history page I previously discussed. This is where it was hiding all along.
Stats for Author The other hidden link is the third icon on the first row. This will take you to the stats page for this particular person.
View Posts from this Author This first link on the second row is very similar to the CCP link at the top of the thread. This will show you only posts made by this person in this thread. |

You think that's all? There's a reason people love Chribba's sites, and Eve Search has even more hidden features that you might not know about.
RSS Feeds That's right, Eve Search has RSS Feeds. Not only does it have feeds, but they're customizable! This thread details the specifics.
Advanced Search Parameters Ever want to search for a term by a specific author? How about find out if the DEV team has ever said "Space Whales" in a post. There's a way you can do that, and I think I'll simply quote Chribba on the topic. Originally by: Chribba You can use (without the brackets):
[author:"Author Name" SearchTerm] [dev:SearchTerm] or [ccp:SearchTerm] (for gm/isd/dev)
The advanced search parameters are especially useful in narrowing down specific terms for an author that has a propensity to post a whole hell of a lot. Sometimes it really is a bother to read through thousands of posts. |
