I'm starting to skill for a transporter on an alt.
I'm considering getting an occator, as most my characters are gallente.
But since its not hard to get to a decent point and continue from there, I'm not sure if to get an impel instead, or something else.
It seems that lots of people hate the occator in reference of being ganked as part of the iteron paper family, even tho its a bit more sturdy. Don't know if its true or every other transporter is getting ganked
I just started learning for industry V which takes a few days, and from there I want to decide on which industrial ship to skill to. I'm mostly going to use it for high sec, and use a BR for lowsecs.
So what do you think?

I've never had any issue using it. I always tank mine, rather than go for max cargo and limit myself to a few hundred million isk cargo.
I heared an interview with a professional suicide ganker and he said deep space transports tended to be avoided unless hauling stupid amounts of isk around.

I've lost one of each. The BR due to stupidness in null (surviving the first bubble, optimistally trying to get out of system instead of loggin, and thusly dieing in the second bubble), the transport in low sec in a gate camp.
Transports have +2 warp core stability, add tank (not max cargo), and another couple of wcs's and you get through low sec fairly well. In both to be honest, my preference is for Blockade runners, but they have fairly limited cargo.

Edited by: Mokanor Lenak on 18/08/2011 09:03:02 But should I stick to occator?
I mean, I can get a nice amount of cargo on it, but sacrifice a bit more to drop 2 or 3 low-slots for armor tanking or resists, but it does have 2 med-slots so I can put more shields / invul shield which helps not to lose as much cargo.
The bustard for example is more of a shield tank (except against em damage) and it has 3 mid-slots to defend it. But its also pretty ugly
Or am I thinking it wrong? Edit: char posting

Personally I'd prefer the Impel, as i prefer the slot layout, not sure it matters enough to cross train.

Doesn't particularly matter.
The DSTs are more or less the same, and it basically comes down to how you want to tank and what kind of flexibility you like. They'll all stand up to a random gank, and they will all die to a concerted effort to kill one (but then, everything does). It's all about preference.
I'd say you should instead look at what else that Indy V skill gives you. The T1 transports still have their use and it provides you access to blockade runners and a very short train towards freighters. So really, the question is: what else do you need?
From that perspective, the Occator gives you the Viator (meh, nothing spectacular), the Iterons (yay) and the Obelisk (good enough). ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡ you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki

Deep space transports themselves have been completely obsoleted. Their miserably poor agility and vulnerability to heavy interdictors makes them sitting ducks in lowsec, and the Orca can do their job better in hisec at no risk. Don't make your decision based on this.
Similarly, don't make your decision based on what other ships you can fly. The industrial skill relies only on racial frigate 3 for its prerequisites, and does not lead to any combat-related ships. Feel free to pursue whatever industrial line you prefer, irrelevant of your combat ships.
As far as T1 industrials go, the Iteron Mark V is by far the best. Nothing really comes close. If you want to transport a large quantity of low-value cargo, look nowhere else.
The Viator is one of the better blockade runners. It can fit a cruiser (10k m3) without using T2 rigs, and gets the largest cargo when fit for agility. When optimized for agility, the Prorator will be marginally more agile but somewhat slower, despite its additional low slots. Stacking penalties hurt that ship particularly hard. The Crane requires T2 rigs to fit cruisers. The Prowler can't fit them at all, but gets a utility high.
Regarding freighters, the Obelisk has the most EHP -- and since freighters are more frequently limited by their invisible "is it profitable to gank me" signature than by their cargo capacity, this is a big advantage. If that doesn't matter to you, the Charon has the highest cargo capacity.
If you're interested in going as far as jump freighters, I would take a look at the Ark. It uses only 2900 isotopes to jump, which gives it the lowest cost per jump and the highest m3 per isotope. This reduces your operational costs.

The Mastadon can muster quite a potent tank without sacrificing significant cargo space - though it is somewhat dependent on getting an Invuln and a Damage control switched on. The Bustard (although I have no experience with that ship) should be able to manage a similarly potent tank and has a higher base cargo. Both ships will suffer from either low explosive resists (the Bustard not managing much better, and potentially a lot worse, in EM) or a shortage of buffer if you want to fit a prop mod however which may influence your choice.
The Occator and the Impel on the other hand, sacrificing cargo for resilience can achieve some quite funny tanks, particularly the Impel and can do so without having to sacrifice the prop mod (though more free PG means more buffer so...). --

I pretty much use the orca to move around agents nowadays, and I carry a prowler inside.
that says it all tbh. ---

The hilarious bit being that no matter how hard you try to tank a deep space transport, the Orca will have more EHP -- and no matter how many cargo expanders you fit, the Orca will hold more. And with a MWD, they both warp in 10 seconds.
There only thing deep space transports can do that Orcas can't is fit neatly through wormholes and tank level 5 missions.

àalso, make use of the skills you've already trained, rather than have you go sniffing about in that dirty mining part of the skill tree. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡ you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki

Just to clarify about an orca.
I'm training several accounts. Will end up with two hulks, orca, and a transport/guard (give or take).
I'm starting my 4th alt now. I was planning for a ite V, but as its made out of paper and duct-tape, I wanted something a bit better, and maybe a freighter later on.
So back on topic of choosing, I guess it doesn't really matter that much? I guess in this case I should just train to occator and also get an ite V on the way?

Weeellà it's more like training for the Viator and Obelisk, get the Iterons on the way and the Occator as part of the package.
At any rate, Gallente haulers are a good, safe choice. None of them are exceptional (wellà except fro the Itty V, because there is no other tier-5 industrial to compete with it), but they all offer solid performance and a good combinations of options and attributes. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡ you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki
