I currently have 26 bil isk in my wallet.
And yet, I have a very hard time finding a single investment which would seem safe enough and interesting enough (in terms of ROI) for me to put some money into.
I used to work for Morgan S. so I am not squeamish when it comes to taking risk but for a reason, nothing seems to satisfy my need for information and profit in all the possible investments around.
How much would you say is necessary to have to not really care and just throw a bil here and there ?

Invest everything you got in Thulium.
After the patch, you will have nothing to worry about!

As I have posted elsewhere, I have made 13 consecutive investments (500M - 3B) with no loss for a return of 4%-15%.
It's not that different from RL, you study the fundamentals of the investee and put the money on those who are worth the risk.
IE does he offer collateral or has a collateralized portion? Is it his second investment (so he's neither a "one time show => scam" nor a "5th bond => grinded rep => time to cash out" scheme)? Does he come with an audit? May you hold the investment collateral yourself and research it on your POS?
It's quite easy to not get scammed but like in RL you have to be patient and only accept the "safely" valid offers out of many fakes.

Just trying to help you get rich m8. Anyway, I have more ISK in my wallet than you have so it makes my opinion worth more than yours.

I can tell you that ~450b is not enough for me to invest in any of the MD public offerings that came up in the past year and a half (since I got so "ingame wealthy"). I only invested in private offerings of people I know in RL personally. _

I never invest in MD secondary market. I only loan to RL friends who play(ed) and they all left and most gave me their stuff, so I'm up a lot.

I started investing when I got to roughly 100bil. I don't keep records but I would estimate that I have invested in over three dozen MD offerings of various sizes and various degrees of collateralisation (as well as a couple of big ingame investments). I have had one public investment default, to the tune of 100mil, but I only invested in that because I also had a private loan with the guy that was covered by 200% collateral. Since he defaulted on both at the same time I made 5bil .
Basically, investment risk is greatly overstated as long as you are careful. I don't doubt that I have been lucky as well but even if I had taken a few losses I would still be very comfortably ahead.
In general I stopped caring about making isk almost completely when I hit 250bil but I'm still careful about MD investments partly because I don't want to contribute to lowering investment standards here.

This is exactly how I feel. Not about lowering the standards since I'm not a big fish but even though some members around here are very professional about financial investments, most of the offers and most of the discussions still feel very amateurish and this is what is disturbing me.
It feels to me that all of this is highly limited by the lack of ingame mechanics not implemented by CCP.

As long as you don't rely on others to do the work for you, there is no real reason not to invest as things are. It can be done successfully by anyone who applies very basic principle consistently. Whilst there are some mechanics that could be changed for the better, the current set up does not make it particularly hard to make isk.

I know people with 100 mille in the pocket who ' don't care' and there are people with trillions who do.So the question is impossible to answer.
I had times where i had 70 B invested wich was all i had.Basically if i would have had bad luck then i'd be broke in a blink. It's a gamble and as such totally depends on your playstyle and how you look at your ingame wealth.

For me it isn't that the risks are too great but that the rewards are too poor.
For a MD investment to interest me it has to be better than what I can do myself in terms of risk, reward and effort.

Indeed. There are nearly always the obligatory 1-2 rep grinding bonds/IPO's to come first. Invest in those and invest small and you have a very decent chance to make some money.
Then again what's the point seeing how those investments are usually in the 0.1-1b range? People who have too much isk to leverage on their own generally simply don't think in increments of 1b. And there wouldn't be enough of these bonds to even invest say 20b at any time.

100B here and I wouldn't touch MD "opportunities". Waste of time if they are collateralized properly (2-3% profit is nothing), waste of ISK if they are not collateralized (scams).

Edited by: lord xavier on 04/09/2011 18:43:21 I stopped caring when I figured I could make more money then I could lose in PVP. I am sitting at around a 112b total value of assets and liquid. Several market investments (Thulium was good when it dropped to 1.4k for a couple days before I took a break, so other then that. Screw your thulium.)
I've done several investments through corps. Only been shot down on one, and that dude lost more in ships, mods, and so forth then was loaned to him. All and all it was enjoyable but, it is hard to know who to trust on eve anymore. I'd personally put long term investments into highly acclaimed M-Ders. Where their reputation is everything in this line of playing. ---------------------------------- Biomass is free (of) Eve4life! |
