To disincentivize usage of T3s

No. ISK is fluid and enough can be easily accumulated, skillpoints are not.

yeh, your right, there should be no penalty for flying a ship that has the sig radius of a cruiser, the scan res of a cruiser, the EHP of a hugely plated battleship and more flexibility than any other ship in game.
wait a minute......

If it bothers you that much, use a Command Ship instead.
More dps, more ehp, drones, cheaper, utility high, no SP loss. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

to me, it would be nice if people werent discouraged from flying t3's more. t3's are really juicy kills, and in my opinion not overpowered.
TLDR; more t3's = more juicy kills

if they want people to not fly t3's so much, they should add something that actually adds game play value
something like low sensor strenght are for marauders.

Personally I think the SP loss is something for the Vets of the game. As the other T3 ships are made such as BC's and BS's we will see the same thing happen. Vets hop into T3's after training up the skills for them...lose one or two and still have something to train up. lol
Rather asinine if you ask me but it makes sense. NO BOOBIES LEFT BEHIND! |

If that was TL, then most likely the person is CR (cannot read)

Please elaborate how T3 SP loss balances anything. I would really like to understand the purpose for it.
If I could chose between T3 SP loss or learning skills, I think the later is more functional to the game, whatever the intentions. CCP got rid of learning skills as it should T3 SP loss. I see no value in it other than being another time sink in which this game already has too many.
how many skills you need to fly a T2 cruiser? and at what rank they are?
now look at the T3 skilltree.
the issue here is that CCP decided to use this skilltree system for T3 instead using one that would require a maxed out T2 tree + few more.
in the case of T3, if it wasn't like this, it wouldn't be surprising if the T3 ships would require <racial> cruiser, recon, HAC, HIC, logi and a crapload of other mid-high rank skills at 5 to unlock <racial> strategic cruiser and their corresponding sub skills.
so CCP thought "why not making T3's require not much skill training time compared with T2's but if you lose them, make it hurt you much more instead?". ---

T3 ships allow you to buy your way into superior ships without needing to train the time-consuming T2 ship skills.
Basically covert SP for ISK --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You lose SP because the ship is too dam badass your character banged his head against THE DOOR for his stupidity when he lost it. Thus explains the lost of SP.

A better question would be...
Why not have a similar SP penalty when you lose a SuperCap?
It's a deterent without applying a functionality nerf. ===== The world will not end in 2012, however there will be a serious nerf to Planetary Interaction. |

An understandable goal; but then why only T3s? A comparable-in-L4s CNR with a half-dozen CN items cost more than some Tengus, less than others. Certainly most of the Machs and Nightmares that the cool kids fly cost considerably more than a T2 fit T-3.
When T-3 came out they were interesting and different and the SP loss added to that vibe. ( cue the bitter vet "remember when CCP added ships?" ) I feel the current alternatives, especially Navy/Pirate, make the SP loss seem a bit dated and I would prefer it went away. But it probably won't.
In a distant, alternative universe where T-3 frigates get introduced, I would assume that they would be more affordable/expendable and probably would not have an SP loss. So they could rebalance the SC when the SF come out (cue BV "soon.")
