I finished my current goal (getting skilled up for a legion) and I am trying to get myself a new Battleship (I currently fly an abaddon). I don't know for which I should skill now. I know the Hyperion is a Blasterplatform and the Megathron is often used as a snipership. What can you guys (and girls if there are any here ^^) tell me from your experience with these ships? The ship will be used to support my Corp (PVP, Incursions and WH). Is any ship good or should I skill for something different?

1) What do you think either will do for you, that one of the best T1 ships in the game (Abaddon) won't? 2) Please show me one person in the entire history of Eve, who has used a Megathron to snipe with. I need some laughs.
For PVP, the Abaddon outperforms both (tho a Mega is an excellent station camper) For Incursions, the Abaddon outperforms both as a damage dealer, tho a megathron wouldn't be terrible here.
For WH PVP, battleships are generally poor - though a cap-transferring RR domi gang can be excellent. -------

Be able to move while applying damage? Having said that, yeah. Abaddon is a beast.

You're not serious, right? Just in case.... Yes, once upon a time the Mega was considered the top sniper in the game.

Before the projectile and laser buffs, it wasn't completely laughed at, but a Tempest or Apoc still did it better, in the opinion of most.
I guess I should have said "show me a Megathron that's been fit with rails in the last 5 years"
Even in the thread you linked, the general discussion about the Mega is that it really shines with Blasters. The discussion was also "pre EFT" when terrible maths and a complete disregard for tracking meant people vastly over-estimated their own setups.
Hell, why don't we go back to pre-stacking penalty, and look at why anyone would fly a ship with less than 7 low slots? -------

That's harder to argue. But, you know, once upon a time....
I always chuckle when I see that I still have EVEFit on one of my computers.

Edited by: Ishtar Andromeda on 23/08/2011 19:50:25 Edited by: Ishtar Andromeda on 23/08/2011 19:49:45 if u can fly legion, u want it for incursions as it is very effective in them, the abaddon is good for pvp and there are some setups with artilleries why u prolly can skill those and then the way would be minmatar bs...esp. the maelstrom which is often used in pvp. gallente ships are less effective in incursions and due to hybrid issues not too popular in pvp (there are niches). therefore i would suggest training minmatar instead of gallente. cheers ishtar
just for the records...megathrons have been the standard fleet sniper still in 2006-2009 while between 2008 and 2009 apocs became popular due to bonus-change...that makes 2.5 years :P

Dont go for gallente for now, they are a broken race in the turret department (they still have amazing drone ships, though).
I would suggest going for the minmatar line, their T2 ships have high EM and thermal resistance good for incursions, they also have some of the best ships for pvp, both specialized and common T1 ships. Minmatar are lacking is in the capital department, or better said their capitals have too niche roles.

How does a T2 EM/Therm resist help over, say, a T2 Kinetic / Thermal resist when the damage dealt is omni? -------

it makes a HUGE difference: you see sansha missiles deal exp/kinetic while their lasors do em/thermal.
small ships with small signatures are almost immune to sansha torps (although still do damage) while their guns will track you therefore dealing higher EM/THERMAL dmg than kinetic explosive

The only thing Gallente Battleship will get you is a Dominix, and eventually a Thanatos/Nyx/Erebus if you want to train up that high.
The Megathron and Hyperion have absolutely no use in today's game. Changes to DDD, Projectiles and probing obsoleted sniping BS fleets and blaster Megas in fleetfights would be hilariously bad. The Hyperion is so gimped by its slot layout along with a worthless armor rep bonus that it is categorically not worth buying. If you're flying fleet, train Minmatar. If you're flying PvE exclusively, train Caldari. If you're flying in-between, train Amarr.
Just don't train Gallente and expect to be happy with it.

The megathron was considered the king-sniper in eve for a very long time and used to be the most frequently fielded sniper platform.
You've got some laughing to do.

The Mega was an awesome sniper platform.... in 2006. Today, just do yourself a favour and forget about Gallente altogether. It's a terrible faction both for PvP and PvE compared to the others. The Domi has some uses but it's not worth going the long route for. Crosstrain to Caldari if you PvE or Amarr/Minmatar if you PvP.

Ok, this thing will melt once it gets primaried but is capible of 1.6k DPS. Sheild tank opens up manouverablity so its not bad on that front. Strictly for PvP though, for when something absoloutely, definately has to die.

Gallente has a solid lineup of superb ships for solo and small gang pvp. Fine, the turret battleships do not fit within current large fleet doctrines, but as that is just a narrow slice of PvP, it's a bit dull to declare the whole race obsolete. Tbh, dps role in large fleet is also the least interesting and demanding form of PvP and not really worth training for at all imo.

The problem is that hybrids, and blasters in particular, scale terribly in the current eve setting. They are worse on armor tanks due to the terrible agility. Shield or speed tanked blaster frigs pwn tho ;) Before you totally discount them, remember that CCP has promised us a hybrid fix soon(I think they said in winter, not sure) ----------------------------------------------- I don't post on an alt, I post on my forum main! |

Before the release of the Tier 3 BS the Mega was the top sniper ship for most. The Machariel with a Scimitar boosting was fantastic but rare (thank you Stradivarius) but the Tempest and the Apoc just couldn't reach in most fleets. Those were the days when 200km wasn't considered good enough for a sniper and the naturally long range of railguns made them excellent in that role. They were also the days, lest we forget, when Tracking mods only boosted your optimal and not your falloff. --

I thank you guys for your response. I guess that I am gonna keep the Abaddon a little longer as my main BS and skill up the Minmatar ships so I will be able to fly an Maelstrom properbly. I already own the gallente ship skills (which I forgot to tell you) up to the Level 3 Cruiser and the Hybrid weapons up to medium. So if there is going to be a fix with the Hybrid weapons than I can skill up to the Battleship up to Level 4 and Large Hybrid Weapons in just a few days (Weapons gonna take a little longer ^^).

Stop hating on Gallente. Yes, there are some faults, but there are also some of the best solo ships for pve and pvp in the game that come from gallente.
Solo PvE - Thanny, Ishtar, Domi and Ishkur. Solo PvP - Myrm, Ishtar, Ishkur, Hyperion and Tarannis for
Gang PvE - Domi Gang PvP - Lachesis, Arazu and Thanny.
Haters gonna hate i know, but Just because hybrids suck in 90% of circumstances, dont wipe an entire race off as terrible.
And i had to laugh at the douchebag on about the Mega never been used as a sniper, it was THE sniper bs only 2 years ago used in 0.0 large fleets and has only been put aside since people started using arty baddens and the like.
Quick note on the Ishtar, it can run level 1's through to and including level 5's. Can run 90% of all complexes and anoms in empire and 0.0. It can run all expedition sites. Fully fit including drones will cost no more than 180mill, that includes a couple of faction hardners for the armor tank situations, cheaper if your passive shield tanking.
@ op, if you want some fits, please send me a mail in game and ill supply for you along with flying tactics for which ever you require.
