I would like to work on getting a 5.0 FACTION standing with Minmatar. I have heard the only reason to do courier missions was for the standings. Is it a lot quicker than doing combat missions? I'm not worried about not making the isk, only worried about standings at the moment.

Courier missions are usually quicker than combat ones but they also net less standing. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the two options are more or less balanced but I haven't run any math.

Storyline mission offers are random. It could be encounter, courier, trade, etc. To gain storyline missions quicker, usually courier missions is the way to go.
The encounter missions will net more Corporation standing increase but will also take longer to complete.
Check out the 'Plan', it'll probably help a lot.

If faction is what your after, then I would go for the courier missions. You can run more in less time, thus receive more story line missions, thus more faction standing.
The Plan mentioned, is a great way to gain standings fast, if you can stick to it.

I am actually working on that plan, just for Minnie and Gallente though. Gonna see how far it takes me, then looks like ill just do some courier missions to finish it off.
Thanks for the quick replies

Depending on your skills it may be worth it to blitz lower level missions. I've heard good things about blitzing level 3 missions in a battlecruiser or powerful cruiser to grind faction standings. As a bonus you get a fair amount of LP, too.
Note that completing these normal agent missions (courier and combat) won't increase your faction standings. Rather the mission's are a means to an end; the storyline missions are what you're after.
If I was you I'd compare L3 courier missions to L3 combat missions. Which ones can you complete faster?

I recently grinded up to 5.0 for Duvolle labs using only courier. It may increase standings slower than combat but you'll need much less SP. Really only Industrial to III and any agility helps (oh and Connections as high as possible).
I did couriers to quickly get my character datacore farming so I needed my skill queue for Science skills. Not sure what you are doing it for but this worked out pretty well for me.
Just put on a good TV series always on top and leave the edge of your screen available and you'll be done before you know it.

Just an FYI, distribution agents have a surprisingly large amount of combat missions on them. I'm grinding up a new research alt, and either have to waste several hours every day not running anything after I decline, or bring my main in to complete the combat missions. These are regular missions, not storylines. Most of course aren't tough, but for a character with gunnery 2, small energy weapons 3, frigate 2 and repair systems one, they're basically impossible.
Be nice if the agents only offered missions of that type, but sadly that would mean deleting most if not all of the multiple stage missions.

I'm pretty sure they changed this when they eliminated most of the agent types. Storyline missions will give you combat and courier but a distribution agent should only give courier. I did hundreds of lvl II and III distribution missions and never had one combat mission.

I just got this account to 9.91 with Minmatar. I previously got it to 9.9 with Gallente. I got most of my standing by speed running combat missions. The fastest way to get faction standing is through FW missions. --- This doesn't even seem to be a regular case of rats fleeing the sinking ship. Seems more like the rats are on fire, the ship is on fire, and the sea is full of drunk Russians. - Jacob Etienne |

As someone who has almost finished a pretty major standings-rehabilitation program (amarr and caldari both pretty ugly but not-quite in the shoot-on-sight range) I can offer the following thoughts ...
- faction standings lower than -2 can be a very frustrating thing.
- faction standings improvement always comes at the cost of contrary factions standings reduction (on a roughly two-steps-forward-one-step-backwards basis). It is possible to maintain good standings with all factions, it just takes a heap more missions and an eye to detail to make sure they don't get too out of balance.
- Never done any but understand faction warfare is best way to improve faction standings ... of course contrary faction standings take a bigger hit.
- Courier missions are **not** always quicker to complete than combat / encounter missions. You can blitz many encounter missions very quickly if you have decent skills and learn the blitz methodologies ... you can't blitz a 5-jump courier mission. Courier missions **are** easier though and don't require much thinking beyond set destination, click, wait, click etc. skill-for-skill courier missions return less corp standings than encounter missions do ... this seems to average out at around 1/3. Courier missions do offer the benefit of not including any anti-faction missions, but some of the resulting storylines can be anti-faction encounters. Some corps do not have any useful encounter agents so the only meaningful way to get corp standings is via courier missions (or indirectly via faction standings) ... ytiri is an example, and the corp I am grinding atm (to access the caldari lvl4 epic arc).
- DMC's faction standings rescue guide (linked earlier in this thread) is a very useful tool for rehabilitating faction standings.
