So has anyone played the demo of Space Marine? What do you think so far?
I'm gutted that it's not yet out on Steam EU. I've seen some videos on youtube and it looks awesome. If, when i eventually get to play it, it lives up to all the praise it's recieving I'll consider getting it.

Well, the XBL demo feels pretty solid. If you like the Warhammer 40K setting and/or enjoyed the Dawn of War games, this game has instant appeal as it feels true to form. Points for atmosphere. The combat goes from trivial on easy to actually somewhat challenging on normal (I've yet to try hard, as I'm a scrub/casual/girlypants wuss), the big finale fight on normal difficulty actually saw me dying a few times to a duo of big orcs (Nobs? I didn't bother to try IDing them, rather just splatter their guts on the walls) until I found the plasma axe and remembered to use Fury. The slow-mo executions are nice if somewhat repetitive, the combo's are basic but do the job and look good. I had to adjust to the gameplay a bit before I got into it proper, as there's no hugging chest-high walls or crawling in cover, just you, your bolter, your chainsword and lots of Orcs to gut. Your 2 AI companions don't get in the way (much, one chose to get in front of me as I was running through a corridor, outside of combat luckily) but I'm not sure if they actually do much themselves. Stun > execution sometimes gets hindered by the fact that the one you stunned gets knocked into the second rank, leaving him out of range for an execution, which can cause death if you were getting low on health. The jumppack level is a nice display of the fun you can have with an assault marine style of play. Should prove a fun feature of the game, so long as it's not a lame gimmick barely used (Halo, I'm looking at you).
All in all, WH40K fans should definitely play it, and action-game enthousiasts should too even if they don't know the WH40K universe as the game is good enough to stand on its own merit.

Ymirus - I thought your intial comment was poking fine at those unable to DL it. But your later reply is great, definately looking forward to having a go at this now. Trying out assault marines sounds like fun!
Thanks!

Meh, couldn't be bothered to finish the demo.
Run around and kill lots of fodder, press F, E to heal, and tweak tactics for boss type fights. Die from some unknown cause because you're blinded by the bright shiny weapons effects, gunfire, and explosions.
I was looking forward to it, but after the demo, I'll wait for a big price drop.

Also, Serious Sam 3: BFE trailer. Oct 18th release date.
Waves of Orcs versus waves of Headless Kamikazis... no contest. As seen in the video, Serious Sam's NPCs have actual depth and character development.

Classic console game problem of action that's faster than controls, like not being able to aim for a sec after doing a combo. Executions lock you into animations but enemies around you can still hit you. Can't skip cut scenes, and the short demo mission has multiple. NO JUMP AT ALL unless you have the jet pack. Only allows you to carry small amounts of ammo.
If the price drops fast I'll buy it for mutliplayer as a devastator because I like the IP. More likely I'll forget about it.

Did not enjoy it. I usually dont care...but total console port. Looked horrible with the graphic options given. Controls not the greatest. And clip size for the "assault" rifle was not large enough. AI for buddies was not good. On top of that the devs stated space marines do not take cover therefore we have this goofy system for health regain of stun/execute in place.... I can safely say after reading lore space marines think tactically and yes they do take cover. And the system of stun and execute sucks as a mechanic.
Mostly my main drip is with the graphic options.
On the plus side the art and maps/layout feel epic and true to 40k... massive buildings and areas etc. |

If you are in the UK and having problems getting it try this.
Open your steam account and then register here, www.SpaceMarine.com once you have registered go to this link to get your activation code, www.SpaceMarine.com/Demo
Then you need to go to steam and click the "games" tab and go to "activate a product on steam" and paste in the activation code, here is the fun bit, due to some contractual bull**** with a game distributor you will have problems and cant download it, it will give an error message saying the game is already in your library and refuses to download it, but it is easy to fix.
Leave steam open and open your browser and paste this url into it,
steam://install/55410
That will activate the download.
