PC gaming is not dead, but offline gameplay (and old style single player) sure is moribund. Did you know that allegedly, Nintendo tried to push for some form of rights (not sure what exactly what, trademark/reservation on the term, or patent on the concept) on "Massively Single Player" ?

It is kind of funny when people say PC gaming is dead, but then neglect to look at what is actually going on in PC gaming. Also, a concole these days is more or less just a specialized PC anyways.
It is more corret to say that gaming, in general, is gradually changing. People like to play/interact with other people, simple, and not surprising. |

Pc gaming hasnt dead for awhile. Digital downloads, and services like steam helped it. Also less of a hardware race in terms what what games are pushing out these days. Game devs are being a bit kinder...or smarter so you dont have to upgrade VGA's/cpu's as frequently like you did before. Which is a huge reason why people moved to consoles. |

The only people who'd even entertain the possibility that PC gaming is dead are console gamers.
Whenever a company wants to make a cutting edge game they do it on PC, because they can use the latest hardware. Consoles are perpetually trapped in the year they came out. The xbox in particular is nearly 11 years old. Perhaps the red ring of death is caused when a vacuum tube burns out.

Not to defend consoles or anything (I don't own any, and don't plan on owning any in the near future), but the XBox 360 is only about 6 years old, the PS3 is only about 5 years old, and the hardware specs on each was pretty sweet when they first came out (only the higher-end and far more expensive machines could match them). Given their price tag and performance, it's only been a year or so, maybe two years tops since a similarly-priced PC could get a comparable performance as far as gaming experience goes.

Well, it's more of a case of diminishing returns, for now. While computing performance has been increasing nearly exponentially, increases in "visual fidelity" have been increasing at most linearly, and we're already getting pretty damn close to the "uncanny valley", so for the next few years, until the hardware to whiz past it becomes affordable, it's more likely for game developers to focus on more stylized approaches to the visual style to avoid landing smack-dab in the middle of that (although not all developers were able to realize that). _

Yeah, i accidentally got that info from the original xbox details.
I'd still say they're greatly lacking compared to PCs, though. Your very best xbox has a mere 512mb of RAM, among other things. When people make games for xbox they aren't thinking of raising the bar and blowing peoples minds, they just want to make shovelware that will be hyped for a couple weeks and forgotten in a couple months.

We survive on a diet of console ports. When was the last good PC exculsive?
I love my mouse and keyboard for shooters, I love the mods for games like fallout and I love fiddling with my PC and upgrading it when the bank balance allows, BUT it really does feel like going down with a sinking ship. I guess there aren't enough of us left to grab the developers attention and budgets.

Well, and then you have stuff like "From Dust" that still manages to be awesome even on an XBox360/PS3 (from what I can see from "let's play" youtubes), but yeah, it does look a lot better on my not-so-expensive PC. You can stretch that RAM a long way if you don't have a bloated OS to eat up a huge portion of it, and if you don't have to concern yourself with hardware differences, so you can optimize a load of things. There's still some "fight" left in both consoles as far as how good (visually speaking) things can get, the developers only now start utilizing them to nearly full potential.
Both the next-gen XBox and PS are not quite overdue yet, with a projected 10-year lifecycle (instead of the "usual" 5 years), but from what I understand, we'll probably see the "eight generation" Xbox/PS come across a bit before that lifecycle is over, so probably around 2013-2014 at the earliest. That is, if they decide to go ahead with "old style" consoles. For all we know, the next-gen consoles might only come out in 2015-2016, but instead of classical consoles, they'll be a console-tablet hybrid, so you can use it both ways (as a console while plugged in at home, or as a handheld gaming platform while away). The "Wii2" ("Wii U") might start being thrown around by the end of 2012, and beat both the XBox and PS3 in terms of raw horsepower while matching price, in which case, Microsoft/Sony might either get forced to accelerate their release schedule or drastically slash prices.
Who knows...

Look no further than the games that simply have no presence to speak of on consoles - like, say, strategy games. The "Total War" series, Sins of a Solar Empire, stuff like that. For action games, shooters and such though (and lately even a lot of RPGs), yeah, we're kind of living mostly on console port material. _

Most gameplay on PCs is dead. Not all.
MMOs are about all that remains of casual gamers on PCs. (Notice I say about all, not all.)
FPS / RTS / Bout everything else is generally only played on PCs by hardcore gamers still.
Casual gamers tend to stick to consoles. Cheaper (relatively) and easier for most. R A I N B O W S |

That is just the probleem people want easy games that don't need grey brainmatter to win
A example from a few years back .. Europa universalis II It was a great game and on difficult average it was even hard , and sometimes very frustrating because of the special historical events that tended to screw up your long term plans Thenext EU III did away with those events and even on hard i thought it wasn't much of a challenge except the AI cheating so blatantly( sp) and what about flight sims seen any good ones on consoles , not me they all more of arcade game than a real flightsim aslong there are people who want a challenge small independent companies will make pc games ---------------------------------------------- God knows everything but a true amarrian knows everything even better |

I agree there.
Though I do have to say, some of the flight sims are ridiculous. (Which is sort of good[By ridiculous I mean ALL keys have a binding, on top of that, all keys with ctrl pressed have a different binding, and to top it off, most keys with shift pressed had yet another binding.])
----Basically everything after this is unrelated----
And also (basically unrelated and completely opposite of what you said), Supreme Commander 2, when it came out, I could play a match, just me, against 7 enemies with the difficulty maxed and win. (Provided nukes and aircraft were restricted [Restricted meaning no one could use them, not even myself]) And then they released DLC which had an AI upgrade, now every time I play against 1 enemy with difficulty "hard" (there are 3 difficulties above hard, 2 or 3 below), it always turns into a stalemate. They make such a good defence that no offence can break it and I do the same. (This is once again with nukes/air units off, they make the game less fun.) R A I N B O W S |

Sup-Com two was nothing like the previous games, it was more like "generic Sci Fi RTS 2". I wonder why they changed the format so much.

My main problem with todays gaming idustry is that there hardly companies any more that will spend money and time on a good ai, , graphics and simplicity seems to be the way these days Alot of games on console are basicly dumb and 9 put of 10 if you know how. It is scripted you win every time Mind you i am talking about soloplay here, That is why so many pultiplayers are just perfect for consoles , but they not my sort of games , Mmo s are a different type of games Back game AI I can understand the driving force behind it thou, romans used to call it panem et cirences ( sp) Bread and games Why would you after a hard day of work spend you time calculting the logistics and fuell needed to invade a pacific island in late 43 while you can shoot pixels with some WWII fps game
Owell enough ranting. Either i am turning into a grumpy old man or did i miss something while i was playing eve Just think it is a shame that simplicity is winning theqe days

PC gaming is far from dead. In fact, it's only ever grown in the last 25 years. The reason everyone thinks it's dead is because of the massive rise of consoles as home entertainment since 2000, which has simply grown faster - PC gaming hasn't actually shrunk. |
