Eventually I want to do solo PvP almost exclusively. I'm not opposed to some group or "fleet" battles from time to time but I want to retain the ability to go roaming by myself wherever and whenever I choose. I would just go pirating but I'm don't know enough about the game to decide if I want to trash my security status and I don't want to stoop to ganking PvErs for my kicks.
I'm thinking maybe going the "anti-pirate" route but I'm afraid that will severely limit my targets if I only attack people with security status low enough to keep from ruining my own. So that leaves me with a couple of other options, RvB or Faction warefare but I'm unsure about what the rules are and I'm afraid they would be highly restrictive. Can I join faction warfare without being in a corp? Can you attack other factions even in high sec? Does RvB allow you to roam around and engage targets on your own? Any opinions on what is the best course for me?

You can also go roam (NPC) 0.0. Lots of people do it solo, although you will most likely die a bit more than elsewhere.

Edited by: Ruban Spangler on 25/08/2011 16:59:31 RvB or FW will give you a chance to PVP solo or in fleets (you might want to give eve uni a look also).
I just recently joined FW. As soon as you sign up you will join the npc corp of your chosen faction. If you like FW it you can of course join an FW corp. If you don't like it you can just resign. There is plenty of scope for solo and fleet pvp. Most of the action is in lowsec but you can also go hunting in highsec. Just watch out for the npc navy in highsec warzones.
It is worth noting that you will find plenty of neutrals and pirates in the lowsec FW zones also

Well... If it's fluffing your killboard, here's a fun way to do it.
Train for an interceptor class frigate but get started as soon as you feel like it. Go to Jita (or any other trade hub but jita is best) and watch for suicide gankers. Once they shoot at someone, they are red and you can freely fire on them. With a sensor booster, you can also nail pods of criminal types running around - collecting bounties for extra income.
You generally don't have to do much damage at all. CONCORD will do the bulk of it but you can get some nice killmails on everything from battleships on down showing "2 involved parties" - you and concord.
No more than perhaps a month in to get to doing this effectively in an interceptor and you can rack up some of the absolute best tear-stained convo's you'll ever see as these folks tend to be very, very big whiners about loss-mails (which they don't get if concord is the only one to shoot their ships).
Think of it as a fun public service type stunt and you can blog it out as an "anti-ganker" blog.

while i do support you going pirate, that doesn't seem what you are asking for.
RvB isn't really for soloing, and the no podding rule is going to put you at a disatvantage due to expensive implants when you do get 1v1's.
FW is a good option. On the amarr/matar side of things, fw occupancy plex's are a great way to get 1v1's especially if your new.
Null is also an option, but you are probably not where you want to get your feet wet. Also, you are correct with the anti-piracy. It will not only limit your targets but you are going to the be victim more than you would think.
Some options people haven't mentioned. Make a 1 man corp. Roam around looking for a "newbie corp" or a mining corp, some kind of PvE. War dec them and get to shooting. war decs for corps are cheap, so that may be an option for ya.
Another is ninja salvaging, look into it possibly (no affect on sec)
Last option would to just ask for 1v1's in trade hubs or low sec hubs (Tama, amamake, etc...don't go to rancer though lol)

There are a number of misconceptions here.
First, pirating does not "trash" your sec status. The status hit taken from engaging a neutral target is quite low, and even a minimal bit of ratting will keep you high enough to access all of Empire space. The real sec hit comes from pods; leave them alone and you'll be fine.
Second, you don't "stoop to ganking PvErs" for "your kicks" as a pirate. To begin with, the best PvE players are solid PvP players too, and you will underestimate them at your peril.
Equally, though, real piracy is about making a living through PvP, and does not afford you the luxury of passing up easy targets, any more than that PvE player passes up the incorrectly priced (ie, they forgot to add enough zeros to the price) faction module on contracts.
If you want to be effective at PvP, leave any notions of ehonor at the door.
And if you are genuinely interested in learning solo pvp, check out my blog. It's a record of how I learned pvp; you may find learning from my mistakes easier than learning from your own. http://flight-of-dragons.blogspot.com/ |

hey, 2 best options imo
Faction warfare is a lot smaller scale than 0.0 and fairly noob friendly and soloing people and plex's or gates is common. Just be warned faction warfare is a partially finished feature.
NPC 0.0 is nice because you can dock up if you need and don't need to worry about sov. Just killed a maelidiction with my rifter 1 v 1 in npc space last night...also chased off a daredevil with my fearsome rifter.. ______ Hello WoW players. Look at your toon, now back to me. Sadly it isn't me, but if it wasn't simplistic pre scripted linear mono dimensional game you could look like me. I'm in a Paladin |

RvB actually is pretty good for soloing if you're into that. The only issue is that in almost all cases a solo fight that isn't prearranged is going to be frigate v frigate (sometimes T2, more likely T1) duel where the stakes are low. The thrill is a lot smaller than the one you get from preying on low sec targets with a Recon or battlecruiser or something (RvB's appeal lies more in fleet fights.) On the other hand you can reliably do 1v1s in RvB, whereas it can be tough to find targets in low sec.

Yes I've read your blog (almost all of it) and it was a big influence factor in making me want to play this game. I almost didn't add the part about "stooping to gank PvErs" because I couldn't find the words to express exactly what I meant. Let me try to put it this way, I get no joy out of one sided battles. Defeating someone who should never been on the battlefield to begin with leaves me with a guilty conscience. I would much rather engage (and hopefully defeat) targets that are out there looking for those one sided battles. Someone who is flashy red obviously obviously is not some noob who wandered too far from high sec.
That being said I realize that some of these so called PvErs probably do know damned well what they're doing and are in fact prepared. And yes I probably do have a ton of wrong notions about PvP which only experience will correct. And yes my sense of "e-honor" will probably put me on the wrong end of a lot of painful situations.
I guess another thing that may turn me off to pirating is the "free for all" nature of it. One minute you might be having a friendly conversation with someone and the next minute he's trying to tear you to pieces. That's what makes me lean toward anti-pirate, RvB or FW. It seems it would enable me to instantly tell whether this person is friend or foe. Sorry if my misconceptions have offended anyone. That's why I posted here in the newcomers section so I could be corrected and steered toward what I'm looking for. Thanks.

Had to figure out how to post on the correct character. The other one was my first character and I decided to go a totally different direction. But yeah T1 frigates will probably be my main focus so that's fine. Eventually I may dabble in cruisers depending on how cheap I can keep it. I'm a casual player so I'll never have a huge bank account to draw from.
My character is kinda in limbo atm training PI skills and massing some cash before I attempt any PvP. In the mean time I need to be researching more on RvB, FW and such.
