It must be possible to make all ships and asteroids, etc... 'physical objects'. At the moment if you have a ship locked you can fire straight through asteroids and other ships at it with projectile and hybrid weapons. If otherships and asteroids, etc... were to stop hybrid and projectile fire it would add a completely new tactical element to the game:
For example - in convoys it would allow a security team to use their own ships as shields protecting haulers and barges against turret fire.
Another example is if you're mining operation is ambushed in a belt - you should be able to hide the haulers and barges in the middle of a large cluster of roids whilst something is being done about the 'intusion'.
Obviously this would mean that missiles might own everything in these situations - however the game could be balanced by missiles slowing down even more when they have to 'bend' around something to go to their target than they do at the moment.
I just think this would add a new tactical element to the game and would mean that people have to be more careful when they 'let rip' with lasers, projectiles, and hybrids incase they slam into the side of their own ships (in the case of corp wars) or other people they are not targetting (in the case of gate campers).
Being able to shield a smaller ship such as a frigate or cruiser with a battleship would be class - and the possibilities for asteroid belt protection would be even better.
However I suspect even if there is popular demand for this the devs will just claim "The engine can't handle it!!".
What do you people think on this? ________________________________________________ Stop Whining!!!

being able to hide behind astroids would be cool, even cooler if your ships icon also dissapeared when this happened. Meaning that they could manually look for you, but their ship wouldn't tell them where you are.

You may or may not recall that missiles once could not circumnavigate impediments at one point and simply hit everything in the way. Having the environment not matter is a dampner on the experience. I would much prefer that asteroids and other collidable objects affected weapons and targetting systems much more than they affect navigation. A combination of much smaller asteroid/object collision radii and larger, more complex, and more navigable fields would make battlefield selection more important. Natural warp or range dampening effects would be interesting too.
Personally, I think such a system is superior, but it was undesirable because they were apparently unable to make turret platforms do the same.

missles should steer around, but it would be cool if you could play "cat and mouse" around the belts with rails n lazers.

Ageed, we will need to have more than 'point and click' manuverability to take advantage of this type of environment. It, however, would be a great if we can toggle out of the point and click 'auto pilot' and go into manual steering.

Edited by: Phoenix 777 on 06/03/2005 19:21:09 i dont think manual sterring will ever happen, this is a mmo not a lan game, the network and the connections used to access the servers (and possibly the amount of players on the servers) put out of question playmodes such as that...
(this is a mmorpg, when you change direction, only the new direction is sent to the server, if you would strear manualy, your direction would have to be constantly updated... and becouse of the ammount of players on the server.. thats a lot of data)
for those who dont know :P you can change directions with a mouseclick
the idea of being blocked from sensors when inside a physical object is great... blocking it from fire would also be cool... but... npc code would need a lot of adjustments... and... if you were in a roid with a hole... there could be a mess if 30 ships from deadspace would try to get themselves into that hole...
