Hey there fellow explorers
I have but three questions about scanning:
1) Is there any other usage for deep scanning probes besides the ability to scan bigger system quickly?
2) Astrometrics skill gives my ability to use more probes but I actually just need 4 or 5 to scan down any site, what can I use additional probes for?
3) I heard that you will need at least 82.5 scan strength on your probes to pindown all the sites and for hisec/lowsec/c1 that seems to be true as I have 82.9 and never missed any site but is it also true for null and >c1 wormholes?
Thanks Tom |

1) lookee here Basically if you know what you are looking for you can filter out types of sites with deep space probes.
2) Since a while every probe can add to the strength, so using more might get you to scan down that elusive signature you couldn't scan with 4 probes. Can't hurt to train.
3) IMO you might get trouble with secure servers and such in lowsec, but you don't need much more probe strength. I can't say anything really about nullsec or w-space tho (but i think that it would probably be DED 10s and the corresponding prof sites of the lowest strength that might give you problems).
Hope that helps.

you'll need a bit higher to scanner strength down plexes that are of the very hard variety 9/10, 10/10. Other than that i think you are golden.
You can invest in sister expanded probe launcher and some sister core scanner probes and that will raise your strength.

Thanks for the replies and that link
I dont know about using more than 4 probes, from what I have gathered it appears that only 4 probes actually count during scanning single signature that is why I asked for the reason to use more but most of the info I got about many things in EVE appears to be quite outdated so maybe thats the case here.
I can scan all radars includind sec servers in lowsec just fine although they require more scans obviously and the only sig that actually gave me some problems was lowsec mag site : "Ransacked Serpentis Ship Graveyard" it was even harder than secure servers.
I have full SOE gear ( launcher + probes ) and also prospector +6% implant for scan strength and deviation but I prefer to not use scanning frig for what I do and only use my Ishkur for scanning and running the sites (hisec/lowsec rad&mag/c1 radars). With scanning frig/T3 I would have over 100 scan strength so that would be no problem but I asked about it because I just want to know if unbonused ship can actually scan down all radars/mags ( those are the hardest ) in all spaces, well maybe excluding c4,5,6 wormholes.

No, not anymore. All probes now contribute to the scanning of a signature.

Edited by: St Mio on 29/08/2011 16:25:16 They changed the scanning system to take into consideration more than 4 probes a patch or two ago :)
Edit: Tooooo slow

just to make it perfectly clear: - you don't NEED more than 4 standard probes to scan down any site - any additional probes as well as upgrades in quality (sisters probes, sisters launchers, 'prospector' implants, ...) and using a ship with probing bonuses will save you A LOT of time

Highsec sites are easy as pie to probe. Don't say anything until you've tried null. Some sites in there are a pain to pin down. Also, afaik all probes count now, and I have found 6 probes to be reliably good for finding things.
And there has been sites that 6 probes, up/down/compass directions, at minimum scan range and basically almost on top of the site, cov ops frig and relevant skills at 4/5, couldn't pin down. Oh and forgot to mention scanning rigs.
