Title says it all, really. I run a medium hisec mining-support POS, and I'm finding that the time and effort involved in producing my own fuel blocks might be better spent mining ore and then buying fuel on the market. The big sticking point in my production chain is liquid ozone: I'm always coming up short and having to buy it on the market.
Has anyone else run the numbers on the build-vs-buy POS fuel equation? I hate ice-mining, and I'm beginning to wonder if I should even bother. I'm coming around to the idea that it'd be better to pay a 5% premium just to get the pre-built fuel blocks and forget about it. My only concern is that then I'll be hostage to the market for my POS fuel needs, and if some big interdiction effort happens, I'll be unable to keep my POS fueled. (Though I guess stockpiling a month or two of fuel in advance would fix that issue....)

Stock pile fuel when it is cheap, as the price seems to fluctuate a fair bit over time. Keep the BPO's and PI runing and just sell the mats. That way if the price of fuel goes up you just start mining ice and in a few days you are making your own fuel again. Keep the options open.
Currently, unless members of your corp are using semi afk time to bring in some ice, you will be much further ahead to concentrate on higher isk activities and buy the ice.
As far as buying ice products goes, When I was making my own fuel, I often found dark glitter was well worth the isk to top up my LO supply. Heavy water is almost worthless so it is easy to buy cheap. |

it all comes down to what you want to be doing.
You have to figure out what your time is worth to you. How much time does it take to do ice, set up PI jobs vs how much you could be making doing other things in the same time period. PI can be done while mining ore, pickups can be done semi afk. ice can be done almost completely afk. but its still time taken that could be used for other activities that perhaps net more isk, or are more interesting to you.
Since the barge changes, ive been doing more mining both ice and ore. I still cant remember to start PI jobs but i know that they are there for when i do. When i need blocks, I augment either the materials for building or buy blocks to fulfill the demand i have.
Because PI scales extremely well and is best done with multiple alts, the numbers cant be run efficiently for your purposes without knowing how many characters and how many planets you plan on or are currently using.
720 hours is 30 days. on a medium (non faction, nonsov) tower thats 14,400 blocks requiring 2,880 coolant 1,440 enriched uranium 1,440 Mechanical parts 7,200 oxygen 360 robotics
144,000 Isotopes 54,000 Liquid Ozone 54,000 Heavy Water
Or 480 blocks of basic ice per month. Mackinaw pulls 35 in approximately an hour with boosts and implants its more. using a hulk its more but more at keyboard time intensive. but still 480/35/hour = ~14 hours of solo ice mining a month means pick 7 days out of a month that you know you will be home and set it up afk while you are doing something else. (eating with the spouse, eating the spouse, watching football, netflix, ****, whatever) remember to check back every hour or so and done. If you have multiple accounts that can also ice mine you can cut your ice time down to a night (or two) of semiafkness.
the PI calculations are up to you. It depends on your setup and your location.
Its not possible to please all the people all the time, but it sure as hell is possible to Displease all the people, most of the time.

Well, for me this is what it boils down to: I can make a lot more isk with those 14 hours by mining ore rather than ice.
PI is fine; I can more that meet my needs with PI. The problem is ice products, specifically liquid ozone. Hisec ice simply doesn't have enough of that material. That's the one thing that unbalances my whole production chain -- having to buy extra ozone tips the build equation from "worth it" to "not worth it".
I thought about venturing out into nullsec to pull in some Dark Glitter, but the logistics of that effort wouldn't be worth the ISK and time investment.

If the decision is 'Buy the components and build the blocks', or 'buy the blocks' the link below, specifically the isk/hr calculation, might be of interest.

If you're one of those that believes Eve is RL and you have to be making isk every single f'ing second you're logged in, then by all means, buy your fuel blocks.
If not, I can suggest one word to you: Math. |

Here's a suggestion: if you can't contribute something useful, why not take yourself and your sparkling personality elsewhere?
Take a day off. Being a jerk doesn't have to be a full-time job, you know.

Steve R is mean, he's destroyed many ideas of OP spreadsheets.
The way for any normally OCD Eve player is to (ab)use his work to make your own spreadsheet ;)

I have also setup a spreadsheet that should cover most of the basics when deciding if you want to build or buy POS fuels.
