So I just got the skills for a retriever, but I am confused about the new strip miners. So what is a good starting strip miner and what is the best? Also, are crystals like ammo?

Great guide, jump to section 4 for mining modules, but you'll probably want to have a coffee and read the whole thing.

For now, just use strip miner I. Then read.

If you are not at mining 5 yet go with strip miner I. If you are at mining 5 and also have the requirements to use the mining crystals for the type of ore you want to mine (I think it is processing for that ore at like 3 or 4. It may vary depending on the ore) and you can afford it you may want to skip right to strip miner II. I just started using them and they are amazing.
The crystals are like ammo but as I am new to them too I am not sure how you can tell when they are about to be depleted. They have a "damage" section if you hover over the module but I don't know when they are about to be depleted. If someone could tell us that would be swell.

Easiest way is to load the crystal while in space and move your cursor over the stripminer , info will appear telling you how far gone the crystal is ( 0% is unused 99% is about to break down
They last something between 10 to 15 hours of contineusly mining but i could be wrong there They have a certain percentage chance each cycle for damage just like. Laser crystals that info can be found on the show info of your mining crystal ---------------------------------------------- God knows everything but a true amarrian knows everything even better |

Edited by: Velicitia on 01/09/2011 08:19:37 If you can't use all the crystals for the ores in your area (e.g. veld, scord, plag, omber for Gallente hisec), don't bother with T2 modulated strips, since you get only base 360m3 per cycle (180 sec). T1 strips get a base of 500 (540?) per cycle.
When you can use the four or five crystals of the "native" rocks (note grav sites don't count -- just refit with T1 there), then T2 will pull ahead.
T1 crystals -> last approx 20 hours, add a 1.625x modifier to the strip miner base (585, before mining, mining barge, etc skills/fleet bonuses are applied)
T2 crystals -> last approx 10 hours, add a 1.75x modifier to the strip miner base (630 before mining, mining barge, etc skills/fleet bonuses are applied)
Modulated Strip Miner II --> this is the one you want to use
Modulated Deep Core Strip Miner II --> only useful for Mercoxit mining (nullsec stuff, don't buy this).
edit --> I pull the crystals when they have 0.9x damage (as close to 0.99 as I can get). You can refine them and get the nox back (assuming good repro skills). =========================

I only ever mine Pyro and Veld so that was all I needed. I can probably use most of the other ones too though. Just can't be arsed mining that stuff.

Strip Miner 1 is a good all-around choice. Mining IV prereq, so if you can use Miner IIs, you can use that. And I think you need that to fly a barge anyway. It mines everything equally. EVERYTHING. High, low, null, whatever.
Strip Miner 2 has a lower BASE yield, but matching a T1 crystal to the ore gives you a bonus that pushes TOTAL yield higher. T2 crystals more so. However, you need Mining V just for the miners, and then the relevant ore processing skill for the crystals, up to 4 for the T2 ones.
Modulated Deep Core ones are for mercoxit in nullsec. No use at all in high.
There are also faction strip miners, but they're rare as hen's teeth. Loyalty point reward from Deep Core Mining. Which is in nullsec. And heavily camped by gankers. ANY that make it down onto the highsec markets are likely to be horrendously expensive, and just plain not worth it.
Also, mining isn't a very good income solo in highsec, but it's easy and afk-able. If you want raw ISK, grind up standings with missions to run lv4 ones, buy a battleship, and run them while you improve your skills to run them better. You can make as much in an hour running missions than you can in 6 of mining. Especially if you salvage, and use the LP store to buy things for sale on the market. HOWEVER, mining is a great base for an industrial career, and gets you minerals that you don't have to pay ISK for. Of course, so is missioning. Less minerals per hour, but more ISK. I combine the two; mostly missioning, but mining when I need to top up on common materials to balance out the mission loot. I do a bit of market trading as well, when I see an opportunity.
Just make sure you learn everything you can. It pays off.

Rubbish - you need to read what you link - from the very first line 'This guide was originally written by Halada and has been modified to reflect current server settings, prices, etc. The formatting has also been updated to work with the wiki.'
Halada literally wrote the book when it came to mining - everywhere else you see stuff based on his work.

He is referring to the original ISK 1.0
And if you can find a copy of THAT, it quite clearly states that he based it on the information in in the Advanced Mining Guide in the Wiki which was in existence for at least 2 years before the ISK Guide was even a thought.

Upon re-reading as you suggested.........your quote is exact. But this means he wrote the WIKI article. And ? Your point? You are confused badly about something.
Absolutely all other mming guides have used this article as their source of origin. Period. And. Final. And that quote that YOU quote does not comment to that one way or the other.

Not free, but they essentially cost you no ISK to obtain. There's time and opportunity cost, certainly, but no ISK.

You said in your original post that that link was based on the wiki page. Its kind of that wiki is based off haladas mining guide which isnt hosted anywhere else as far as I know.
The ISK guide is based on that wiki and so is every other guide apart from Haladas mining guide which is the original guide which everything else is based off.
