Just saw this ad when I logged on:
Quote: POWER TRADERS AND EMPIRE BUILDERS REJOICE
13 PLEX FOR 199.99 TRADE FOR ISK, REWARD CORP MATES BUILD YOUR FLEET
CLICK FOR MORE PLEX OFFERS
Maybe I'm being a fuddyduddy but.. doesn't that sort of cross the line into suggesting players pay real cash for game advantage? Look at their sales angle here, for the low low price of $199.99 YOU TOO can be a "empire builder," "build your fleet," and the oddest one -- "reward corp mates."
WTF does that mean.. are there ceos out there who will drop $199.99 of their own real life money just to give their "corp mates" a PLEX bonus?
I know PLEX ain't new and of course we all know why people buy PLEX.. I'd just rather not see CCP come out and say it, I'd rather it be hush-hush wink-wink.. not just out in your face "for $199.99 you too can win Eve."
Alas.. I can't even afford that damn monocle much less 13 plex for the low low price of $199.99..

Confirming that someone who pays Ç200 for 4b ISK is suddenly going to be a PvP powerhouse.
What do we call people can't earn enough ISK to PvP, don't have enough skill to compete on an even playing field so instead buy PLEX's for their faction fit faction battleships? Say it with me. Space piħatas.

whatever, plexes mean i get to play for free and buying isk in this game doesn't make anything OP because you can easily lose it, if other people want to fund my gametime i'm happy. the only thing that's idiotic is that "power traders and empire builders" are suppoused to buy this, isn't industry about making money and not pumping it in, that's the real ******ed part

Bear in mind that those PLEXes are quite more expensive that just paying a month of subscription. Sold ingame will hand you out some 4.8 billion ISK, which you may lose very quickly unless you know what you're doing...

Edited by: Meryl SinGarda on 03/09/2011 11:01:42 Since when does having money equal winning? Sure, you might be able to stand there and brush off your shoulders, pushing up your monocle as you sip your tea, but if you don't have the skills and know-how to fly a good ship and fit the proper modules, you're just going to lose all of that cash you hold so dearly.
Not that I'm against it, I do buy PLEX every so often, because I can. Fly safe, Die hard |

I just don't like the advertising angle. They ought to just advertise the specials without all the tacky tips on what players can do with bought isk; people buying isk can figure it out on their own..
what I don't like is CCP coming out and saying what the PLEX is for. Like I said in my OP ideally it should be hush-hush, something to be embarrassed about, that you had to go and buy isk. To me, buying isk is fail.. whereas I think CCP wants to move in the direction of encouraging it, and that's what a MT pay and pay game is.
(and as I'm sure you're aware, an alliance of isk-buying players definitely has an advantage)

you forgot the part about buying rewarding your pvp-savvy friends using your cash.
(the only part of that ad I really disagree with is that it tries to create the expectation that a "good" CEO will spend RL cash to reward his corp members with PLEX/ISK; I actually chuckled at the ambiguity of "power traders", though)

Heh.
Seeing the rapid decline of active subs the new ccp is going to be tossing out special money grab deals like a crack fiend so they can finish world of darkness before the vampire craze dies off completely leaving them with two games that no one cares about any more.
Oh and dust doesn't count as it will be dead on arrival.

maybe they just want to polish their number for 4/2011 to make FY 2011 look nicer?
(US fiscal year ends September 30th, above theory would be very nice if not for CCP being an icelandic company and in Iceland fiscal year=calendar year)

No.
More stupid people means increased short term profits as the stupid people will take much longer to realise ccp has turned unmitigated profit whoor.
Just think of the day when all the smart players have finally bailed and all that are left are the stupid ones.
Though I suppose contracting a raven as a cnr will be the pinnicle of scamming then.

So I take it all those who think PLEXes are bad also really don't like being able to keep an account active for free?
Because that's what it comes down to. Yes, obviously selling PLEX in game (or a timecode on the forum bazaar, for that matter) means you shell out some cash to have money in game that you wouldn't have otherwise. Yes, obviously that is one major advantage in a game where money is, well, not everything, but a lot, until you reach the higher echelons where you count money in the billions rather than the millions.
Of course CCP could go and discontinue PLEX and Timecode trading, so you can no longer buy in-game advantages with real money. If they do that, everybody will have to pay real money to keep their account running. That'd mean a lot of the people who multibox can no longer afford more than one or two accounts, so multiboxing will essentially disappear, and active player(=character) numbers will plunge. Also, because those who multibox in any significant manner are typically doing so to mine, cutting out multiboxing will drastically reduce the ORE supply, which means ORE and mineral prices go up, production costs go up, market prices of most stuff people buy and use every day go up.
I think it's fair to say that'd be bad for everyone. The reason why this doesn't happen is CCP allowing you to buy PLEX for isk. Now, remind me again why this is something to be ashamed of and to be kept hush-hush wink-wink?
As others pointed out, money will get you a lot in EVE, but very little that can't be lost a minute later if money is all you have. And if you play well enough to not have that happen to you, you probably play well enough to not need to pay for your ISK. Or your account, as long as CCP sells PLEX.

Plex are just fine.
It's what ccp is doing with all the money plex brings in is what is the issue.
Name one expansion feature that has been developed to its final form?
Just one. I dare you.
Oh wait it was all abandoned to focus on an avatar technology that has zero effect on eve's core game mechanics that just happens to be 100% transferable to that other mmo ccp is developing.
lulz you suckers.

I loled - 'empire builders' who buy plex for RL cash to reward their members?
Yeah right - Vuk Lau actually used the tax/moongoo isk his members provided him with to buy plex for his 20-something accounts and ebayed the rest, so it obviously pretty much works the other way around.
'Power traders' buying plex for RL cash? Ahahahaha! I know a thing or two about trading in eve and if someone needs to fund his 'power trading' ambitions with RL cash, he's doing something terribly wrong.
Again, it's the other way around - a trader slightly knowing his business easily funds his accounts by trading and has the 4.8 bill these plex would be worth as a surplus by the end of the month.
CCP continues to amaze me...

"Buying Gold" and "P2W" are different. P2W is when you can get something someone else cant. Buying gold just makes it take longer, but anybody can attain the end goal.
The caveat with Eve, as pointed out several times already, is that Eve has loss and a sharp learning curve. I have seen people spend hundreds and fail at level 4 mission running.
Conversely, once you have experience at Eve, you can pull 100 mil an hour in hisec or 200 mil or more from Wspace/null solo (well single player multiple accounts).
Admittedly 'buying gold' is still an advantage, but once you are established it isn't really game breaking at all. . Adapt and overcome or become a monkey on an evolution poster.
