hey guys,
So, I have a ATI Radeon HD 5870 (1GB) that I love but periodically the screen goes black and whilst I can hear sound continuing in the background and can usually still ping the IP address, the keyboard doesn't respond and I have to hard reboot the machine. The system logs show nothing and I'm kind of at a loss as to what's going on so I was going to get a new graphics card from Best Buy this afternoon and see if the problem continues but I am a little out of touch with the current graphics card marketplace and was wondering what cards people would recommend? I'm looking to spend up to around $300.
thanks! ~ Achates

I recently bought a GeForce GTX 460 for $150...runs a single EvE client on max settings, and no performance issues with CQ for the ten minutes or so I looked at it before turning it back off

EVGA 1GB Cards. GTX 450 through 465 are all good value and will run two clients, max settings, no problems.

Well. If you keyboard suddenly doesn't respond sounds more like something else is wrong than the graphics card.
What resolution are you using? How many screens? If you use (very) high resolutions, you will benefit from a high amount of RAM. If you're only using a standard 20-24" 1920x1080 screen, I doubt you will benefit from much more than 1GB with most current games.
What games are you playing? Do you want/need DX11 support(AMD 68xx Series)? Nvidia have a in-built PhysX support, so that your, much faster, GPU will do the psychics processing instead of the CPU if you game supports. But that's not exactly new.
Stop being lazy, read up on it, like everyone else that are looking for new hardware.

I had this with an early 5 series card. How old is yours?
It would literally happen every 10minutes or so and made any fleet ops impossible. I RMA'd the card and they found no problem with it, sent me another anyway. I had the same problem, then more people reported the same, the common issue was windows 7. Turned out to be a problem with the way windows 7 changed the clock speeds and voltages of the cards memory, doing one slightly before the other led to instances where the card was undervolted, and it would hang.
This was only a problem with the early cards, which used cheap nasty HYNIX memory, so check your cards memory.
Failing the above, the 6 series cards are already pretty cheap, pretty nice bang for buck, and the drivers are actually pretty good which is a change for AMD.

Edited by: KISOGOKU on 05/09/2011 19:11:34 Did you pllayed game at windowed mode ? Windowed mode =2d and result = lowered gpu and mkemory clocks and not only amd/ati but also nvidia suffers from same thing. Edit :If this is the problem you can rise gpu/memory clocks manually ,try msi afterburner program 8works with all ati cards9 or Trixx for sapphire cvards

CCP and nVidia work hand in hand (I'd say something else but...). Guess which video card you should get. ____________________

man that sucks I had a Nvidia that was doing similar things an when I opened it up to look at it the main cooling man had stopped -------- CCP knows better than the players whats good for their game. SOE knew what was best for SWG too. Better than all those players that left too. |

First do you prefer Nvidia or ATI, if you don't care then see the rest.
Is your motherboard using a ATI or Nvidia chip set ? OR should I say is your motherboard designed for SLI or Crossfire.
So SLI - go with a nvidia card Crossfire - go with a ATI card.
As far as the actual problem with your current card. I suggest you do a google search. YOu will find tons of info on the problem you are describing. You may find a fix without replacing your card.
And to be honest asking questions here is a waste of time, you will get more troll then actual answers. Best to find out what is wrong with your current card before replacing it. Otherwise you may be in the same spot in a few more months with the new card as well.

I use 3gb of ram, a quadcore q6600 and 2.4 or 2.6 ghz and a HD5770 1gb ram.
IT SMOOTH BABY ARSE
3 clients, HDR, the lot and not black screens, lag or heat issues and even the card is quiet too.
Dunno what you folks do with your stuff really.
