I'm trying to decide which race to level ships for. I'm looking for thoughts by experienced Loki, Tengu, Legion, and Proteus pilots in terms of what each are capable of. Basically I want to know what you feel are the weaknesses and strengths of each ship are in terms of PvP and PvE. I've seen a lot about the Tengu and Loki but very little about the Legion and Proteus.

The only one I can actually fly is the Tengu, but I know a bit about most of the T3s. The main strength of T3s is that they're versatile.
The main issue the Legion has is that most of the things it can do, the Zealot, Sac, or Pilgrim can do better.
The Tengu is an amazing missile boat that is a major upgrade from the Drake in every way, Tengu is one of the best PvE ships in the game (and the best sub-BS PvE ship by far, though the Ishtar is quite good too).
The Proteus has some trouble because of its weapon systems, the fact that most of its DPS comes from blasters kinda hurts it. The Proteus' main claim to fame is the EHP, since it can easily have 1M+ EHP.
The Loki I hear the least about. It seems to be similar to most Min ships in that there's a ton of different ways to fit it and use it, but I haven't read enough comments about it to be able to judge it very well.

Short answer.. Tengu for PVE... all of them will work for PVP. Some will tell you that certain T3's are really no better than similar HAC. So, if PVE is what you like, the answer is easy, if it's PVP, the answer isn't so easy. Someone else shoudl be able to fill you in the PVP pro's and cons of each.

i havent been in pvp with it yet, but the legion can certainly be great at pve. ive been able to handle every level 4 mission thrown my way so far running home guard missions. though I feel that its a little tough to try and get some good dps out of it while keeping some tank but with the right subsystems and right mods, you can get some good results.
battleclinic legion fit
i use a fit similar to this and the dps reaches around 620 dps. it may not outperform the tengu but it certainly gets the job done.

in my experience with the proteus it is possible to do level 4 missions although flying from target to target gets old really fast, for pvp i absolutly love it. ehp and dps of a bs, speed and size of a cruiser. just gotta get past the limited range and dmg types.

Actually it is possible to do level 4s in a frigate, it will just take a lot of time. Proteus is the least used t3 out there.
Tengu fits can give you 750 DPS at 110 km - most of the larger ships can't duplicate that feat. Loki is the long range webs and AC fits that do about 550 dps. Legion could be laser fitted and then you get all the advantages of pulse lasers - ranges up to 50 km or dps up to 820 (with couple of implants and close range t2 ammo)

Don't listen to that crappy about the Amarr T2 ships being better in their respective roles than a legion. It has the range of a zealot and the tank of a sac in a normal pulse fit. In a neut fit its just as good as a curse which is saying a lot considering a curse is pretty much op.
The best thing that any T3 has going for it is that it can be any of these ships and can perform atleast as well if not better in those specific roles. So what might take you 4 ships to accomplish you can so with one T3 and a few subsystems.
The legion is a badass ship period.

tengu can also put out 1052 dps at 29k with max skills, but you run though like 10k ammo/hour

I just took the maiden voyage in my Tengu a few days ago and I am in love with this ship. I use it for PvE in both high sec (LvL 4's) and Null Sec (Plexes) and I am very impressed with the ease at which this ship handles itself. Scanning is much easier... even better than my Cheetah. As far as PvP goes... Im not going to use it. Way too expensive to give someone the opportunity to kill. But I am looking forward to more PVE in Nullsec and WH's with this ship.
In the future, I will also have a Legion as I do have decent laser skills as well...and let's be honest... the Legion is one badass looking vessel.
******* Some mornings, it's not worth chewin' through the straps. |

Yes, because it's not like the curse has a range bonus to its neuts or anything...

The Legion is much faster and has twice the EHP, it doesn't need a range bonus for neut. If you want a dedicated neuting drone boat fly a curse but quit telling everyone the legion is garbage its total bs.

Sounds contradictory to me.

No one said the Legion was garbage.

Yes, because everyone loves an ewar boat that has to get into scram range to do anything useful. Especially one which is three times as expensive and loses skill points when it explodes.

People are prone to exaggeration. The Legion isn't as much of an upgrade over the Zealot/Curse as the Tengu is to the Cerberus or Loki over the Muninn/Vagabond/Huginn. Every T3 has one or two gimped offensive subs, the Legion could use the range bonus rather than drain amount bonus, etc. small niggling issues, but overall, it's a good ship.
Just not 3 Zealots worth of good.

Well haveing flown the legion in medium to small gangs I have to say that it is my favorite ship. The roles it can fill are insane. Weather you you want a laser platform with over 170kehp 740 dps or the ham set up with over 250kehp with 690dps and practically immune to neuting. Not to mention the neuting setup with a similar tank to the ham setup. I Personally have been in gangs where we take a minimum of 2 neuting legions specifically for neuting caps and have seen it work verry efectively in breaking caps. A few months ago I was in a t3/abso fleet where we had a Russian Titan tackled and neuted with 3 legions and when the rescue squad came in they could not kill the legions due to the insane tanks and the logistic support we had. Zealot, sac and curse are nice but im sorry it just cant do what the legion can do as far as tank and gank is concerned. However I will say however that t3's are best in T3/command ship gangs. The 100mn ab fits are annother topic of discussion worth mentioning.

It nees one more gun slot, then we can talk about it ebing good.
HAM Legion with a neut is kinda cool, but not all that special.
Tengu is awesome, one of may favorite PVP ships. Most fun HAM ship in the game.
I don't really fly the loki or proteus that much. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
