I run a small corp where the members kinda do their own thing most of the time and we group together on weekends for mining and complexes and stuff. Lately we are looking at how we can get organized and start bringing money into the corp wallet. We have a healthy selection of tech 1 BP'S like the standards (frigates etc). I like building ships for the market alot so I thought that would be the way we would bring money into the corp.
We would do the standard mining op thing then use the mins to build and sell the ships, yada yada But I keep looking at the min reqs for the ships and with the market where it is at I would actually be taking a loss on the ships. As far as I know a unresearched BP will get ya a little profit or it should anyway and a researched one would get ya a better margin. Am I correct or wrong?
Is it just the current mineral prices that are driving up the buy orders and making it unprofitable? Granted we could just mine and sell the minerals but I would like to run the business aspect rather than suck Veld and sell Trit. I am currently at PE 4 but I dont think PE 5 matters a great deal unless you are doing BS's or large mineral requirement projects. I suppose some you bigger corps are bringing in millions daily so are ya building or selling mins? If ya have any suggestions please let me know as we will be recruiting soon and I would like to have a plan for the longterm before we get more members. Thank You

Ok firstly ME reserch is very important!
I would advise starting off with reserched Bpc's and PE 5 is also quite important, it may not seem much but it will save a lot in the long run.
You will not be able to make a profit woth an unreserched Bpo (or at least i would think it was very hard to do so) If you can get some lab slots, yes the rent is expensive but you will be able to buy Bpos and reserch them so you can produce things cheeper.
Good luck.

You can make plenty of profit off unresearched BPOs. You can't do it with frigates.
First, NPCs build them. Since frigates are pretty cheap anyway, its not that big of a modivation to jump 5 systems to buy your frigate that's 5k cheaper.
Second, Agents give out Frigates as mission bonus rewards. I used to sell frigates in my agent station for dirt cheap, simply because they had no "value" to me as I didn't spend anything to build them.
Third, with the rising rent prices ME research on a frigate BPO is tough to justify. Seems kinda silly to spend 2 to 3 million to improve your ME level when you'll have to sell 80 or so frigates to make up for the cost of research.
Look at modules or bigger ships. You can get a healthy margin from these items without investing in ME research as long as you're not trying to compete in the big market systems.

Jonas I appreciate it, that explained alot to me as why I wasnt making money on the frigs. So I guess then the overall goal is get alot of people who like mining then go after the big stuff, cool. Thanks guys, and if anyone else has suggestions please let me know.

My corp owns the T1 Frigate BPOs as well. even all researched to ME10. Anyway, you're right, Frigates won't play in their costs, we merely own them so we don't have to worry and ship frigates, if we will need more than the occasional one some day.
Here's my experience of BPOs you can kinda make profit off without doing too much research: Cruisers and Battleships (via BPCs if you don't have the BPO) Heavy Missiles, Cruise Missiles, Torps - especially in Amarr, where they are hardly sold and some mission runners need them at all (they aren't that often in the loot in amarr space as well).
Any other ammo you know is needed but not available.
and of course, researching is important, but with the current lab prices it's a hard decision to make.
