I was wondering if anyone here has played it? Seems like the ruthless eve crowd would like to play a game where the emphasis is to backstab your allies.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diplomacy_(game)
Its pretty fun and for the most part pretty strait forward. (I will admit that since everyone moves at the same time, trying to figure out how battles turns out, can be a little confusing)
Its an old game, and according to its wiki, John F. Kennedy and Henry Kissinger consider it their favorite. So pretty cool that people that have done real world diplomacy liked playing it.
Anyway, just really asking if anyone has played it. |

Never played that ... but, since we talking awesome board games, PLEASE, OH PLEASE give this game a try ...
TWILIGHT STRUGGLE ... play it with someone that enjoys playing boardgames, and you both have plenty of time to idle away the afternoon or the night or the day.
See, Im the kind of guy that loves the reviews off boardgamegeek.com , and well, they always said puerto rico and agricola were super duper awesome good games, and I find them good, but Catan like good, (good for certain days with regular guys coming over to chill with their kids or wives or gfs) so I decided to buy Twilight Struggle with a bit of skepticism, and a big mistrust of the 2 player only system.
Oh Boy, have only managed to play it 6 times in short bursts of 2 to 4 hours ... and well WOW!
Its one of those gems of gaming, where u actually sit with someone and think , slowly and carefully what your move NOW will entail for the future.
I remember always frowning, at first (and still learning) when reading what the cards can do. So many choices and tactics. Im still learning and sadly dont have much time to keep on playing but those were some of the BEST 50$ bucks ever I have spent on a game after Earth Reborn which I love thoroughly too.
Will keep an eye on Diplomacy tho, but gaming partners here in Panama are scarce ... the premise of the game sounds pretty interesting and reminded me a bit of TWILIGHT STRUGGLE.

There is no luck in Diplomacy, there is no dice.
While Ill admit that A&A is a good game, there is no real diplomacy involved, since the sides are predetermined before the game starts. |

Monopoly is advanced craps. Again, there is no luck in Diplomacy.
One thing that separates Diplomacy from Risk, is that everyone moves the same time. The cards you use in Risk, can make a weak power take over a whole continent in a single turn, and peoples allegiances can change based off a dice roll.... there is no cards or dice in Diplomacy. It might make the game seem kind of shallow, but the real game is actually played in the meta game, a lot like EvE. |

OP is the guy that flips over the monopoly board "A genius throws a Molotov cocktail and soon realizes that he's going to die choking in a maze of smoke and flame. A hero drinks a Molotov cocktail and soon realizes that if he does a split in midair, he can hit twice as many zombies per kick. Drunk hero wins again, wusses." ~Cracked.com |

Some of the answers so far in this thread reminded me of the awkward moments you tell your friends " Hey lets play a boardgame" and they all suddenly go "RISK or Monopoly?" and I bring out EARTH REBORN or if its just a friend and me and I bring out CLAUSTROPHOBIA
Their faces are "uhh ok" ...
I even remember a guy I once met and we started talking and I told him I loved boardgames and he said "OMG ME TOO, lets play one of these days, I LOVE SCRABBLE, UNO and MONOPOLY" ... I was ... mildly annoyed, so I brought CATAN (to take it slow) to his house and a whole new world opened to him.
Anyway, I know boardgaming is not everyone's cup of tea, but its a wonderful hobby to pass time with loved ones, friends and even new people in a nice environment, or like me, on those days when there was not enough quorum for a good old fashioned dungeon run in weekend D&D ... Diplomacy is excellent. I used to play it live with friends, then later via email on AOL. Kind of like a chess game between 7 people. The diplomacy part comes in because your kingdom (France, Germany, Austria, Russia, etc.) has neighbors on all sides. If you use an army to attack a neighboring province in Austria, the army is no longer defending your province that it's coming from. That leaves it open to being snagged by Russia. So before attacking Austria, you better have a deal in place with Russia. There's a diplomacy (secret deal-making) phase, then everybody writes down their orders, then everybody's orders are executed at once. Lots of surprises, because of course people write orders that don't necessarily follow the promises they made in the deal-making phase.
It's a pure battle of wits, and the situations get really complicated. You have to do these huge if-ten analyses: "If Germany supports Munich with its army in Ruhr, then my attack on Munich will fail. But if France attacks Ruhr, that will cut the Ruhr army's support and my attack will succeed. But Germany can also support Munich with its army in Kiel. But it may use that army to attack Russia in Denmark. What about Austria? We have a deal for four more turns. But this attack is a perfect chance for him to backstab me now and boot me out of Tyrolia."
Lots of fun. Maybe someday I'll join one of the online Diplomacy play-by-email groups. |

That game looks pretty fun; I'll have to give it a try at some point.
I also recommend people give Twilight Imperium a shot. Long game, but gives you a chance to ham it up and do all sorts of fun spacey goodness. ISD Dorrim Barstorlode Lt. Commander Community Communication Liasions (CCLs) Interstellar Services Department |

Yea, I do get cutthroat when I play monoply. 16 hr games and we only stop because we have to go to work 30 mins later. For Risk, my longest game was 2 weeks.
Btw, you do not need luck to be good at monoply. you just have to be good at conviencing the other players that what you have to offer is better than what you want from them. It's a game of landlords screwing over its tenants and other landlords. Where you land on the board really doesn't matter. You have to learn to work with what you get.
I form allies in risk and pool reinforcements together. When it gets to the point of betrayal, I make sure I have all the reinforcements and take out my ex-ally and keep the other opponent at bay. I always make sure there is atleast one other player I'm still playing against so my ally is completely caught off guard. Btw, I've never lost a game of risk in 8 yrs.
Based on the way I play these games, I think I would love Diplomacy. Stick around. I'm full of bad ideas. ~Isaac Clarke |

See you don't even need boardwalk to make money or be good. All you need is 3 colors off the other sides to bankrupt any of the other players. I usually go for the ones I land on the most, which are the light blues, orange, and reds. Maybe yellows or greens if I'm landing on them a lot, depends on the game. i don't even get board walk unless it's through auction or it goes back to the bank after I make the holder go bankrupt. I love the game. I found one of my copies under the bed the other day when hoovering.
My sole claim to fame, other than running a Diplomacy zine in the 70s and 80s was to fly over to the US and actually winning the US DipCon in the mid 80s.
Which surprised everyone as I was generally a poor player. But I do love the game and it played posally is far, far, better than around a table because you don't know what is is being discusse between the other players.
One of the best ever board games by far.
