Shalua Rui wrote:Well, aside from the fact that it would give CCP another opportunity to introduce more PLEX/micro transaction stuff... I kinda like the idea. Not totally free reign about colours/patterns/decals, mind you, but some predefined variations would be nice.
If you had a custom paint shop available, you'd expect to pay for said paint job with ISK.
If that's the case, why not ALSO throw in the option to pay for it with cash since it's purely cosmetic.
In EVE, this is a micro transaction... the ability to pay for something that gives no advantage with either ISK or cash.
Knee jerk reactions to stuff like this is sooooo last year... To carve a successful niche for yourself in EVE you need to be able to out sell, out produce, out fight,-á out run, or out wit your competitors. If you can do none of the above, your only option is to complain on the forums that somehow you are at a disadvantage using the exact same tool set-áas the rest of the player base. |

Opinions, opinions... it maybe just me, but paying for stuff in a game I already pay a monthly fee for, always kinda rubs me the wrong way... can't help it. Ginger forum goddess, space gypsy and stone nibbler extraordinaire! |

I'm not too fond of the idea because it will reduce the visual identity of the 4 races. Plus there's the chance for things to get very garish like in that video that was posted on the first page. However I would love to remove the camouflage from all of my ships...
I think I'd rather see corp logos on ships, as well as a more in-depth system of overlapping shapes to create the logos in the first place. Something like the system in APB. I was having fun overlapping shapes in Eve's logo generator the other day: http://burhtun.com/sketches/evecorpicons.jpg But the number of shapes to play with is limited, most shapes don't work well with others, you can only use three layers maximum, can't change their positioning or size, etc.
It might be cool to have decals like the fighter plane style sharks mouth to spray paint onto you ship, but there is so much variety in the shape of the hulls in game I wonder if that would work out well or not. |

Not sure if this topic should be here or in OOPE since it is directly EVE related.
Hmz, and have TiDi in every single system as the server has to load every persons own private paintjob on their drake

When you come accross someone else in space do you even look that closely at the ship they are flying? Generally I see the name of the ship on my overview but that's about all.
Corp logos woud be pointless since its written in brackets beside the pilots name and on the show info tab, which is the first thing I would do when "looking at a pilot"
This seems like a redundant feature, it's only benfit would be to the person flying the ship and looking at it in the center of the screen all the time, it's novelty would soon wear off, in my opinion it's not worth the technical requirements. |

NO
And I'll tell you why...
If you did that, the install of EVE would swell to epically epic proportions - and we would not want that.
throwing some BS math at you; if the texture of 1 ship is 1MB is size, and everyone had their own variant, in addition to the current size(s) of textures, then you got several gigs just for one ship.
And then...
Everytime you log into EVE, you gotta update the entire texture set so everyone is compliant and using the same textures as everyone else.
If you just wanted a pretty paintshop ship for fun, that no one else would see in space - then you have my blessing.

Its probably fairly easy too just modify the local client files for the ship texture too look how you want them too look. Not saying you should do this orthat you even can. But it works in most computer games. I'd Just like to point out that the size of code for a color is a 6 digit hexadecimal number (FFFFFF). Every digit has 4 bits of binary code (0s and 1s, 0011). So, We're looking at 3 bytes of data per color for 6 digit hex with a total max of 16,581,375 colors equaling a total of about 48MB for all colors. Now, all you need is a gui and a few windows to do the editing, to overlay the colors on the textures. The textures do NOT have to be touched and they are all already on your computer in the first place. It would be the same as if you docked. In fact you would already be docked when you clicked on an icon to pull up the "paint" window. Since everything is already there and we just have to add the code for the gui of the editing window and the colors and how they overlay on the ship plus all the corp icons which are all already in the game, we're looking at 120 MB to 300MB max for the whole setup.
To actually load the colors while you're flying about, the game already pulls all the data from your HDD anyways. The only thing that comes across the internet is the code telling the application what to pull up and re-ender to screen. To load colors, it would be about the same as loading the colors on this forum in terms of the amount of data required to load the colors. Of course there is more data being loaded for the textures and models of ships, roids, stations or whatever but all that data is already being loaded and to add a color overlay will not make a lick of difference. Stick around. I'm full of bad ideas. ~Isaac Clarke |
