But what about "Females playing as males on EVE"?

Personally I couldn't care a less if they are female, male, something in-between, or mineral. And frankly if you do (original poster) then you are a bit of a shallow individual

I am a stereotypical 6-foot, 300lb guy who plays a EVE with a female character. My name would probably be Bob and I would have excess body hair if I were any closer to the fat geek mould :)
I do so because it makes for a nicer play environment. This is mainly because age-old prejudices and gender stereotypes are a lot more common than we might like to believe. Chivalry and manners are not dead.
First contact is usually the most awkward time in a game, where people are brought together by circumstance, be it to ask a question, to resolve a dispute or by a common need.
I find I can resolve brief encounters more positively by having a female portrait, I encounter less smack-talk and tend to get more helpful replies. I can seem more approachable and less confrontational than if I had a character called 'Thargon' the 'leet-but-oh-so-macho rugged Caldari Male.
Female gamers need not worry about being chatted up (I don't look for a g/f replacement online) nor do males need be intimidated by my manliness. I don't tend to get free stuff thrown at me, nor do I ask for it. I also have only once had a guy 'come on' to me but I have seen even supposed friends interact in an appauling manner with gamers who admit they are RL females.
In more extensive social relationships, for example corp membership, I am happy to admit my maleness and have yet to be kicked out of a corp because of it. Be I male or female IRL it does not change my nature.
I play EVE to have fun and it is more fun for me on the 'other side', so to speak. |

Bah that was supposed to be a secret!
Let's get this straight, if a girl has to be "rescued" 10 times a week from a brothel shes not a damsel but a prostitute.

I picked a male character because they didnt have any cow ones.
Serieusly, number one reason why people choose female isntead of male regardless of gender:
Male = Ugly.
Female = Hot
I feel sry for all the females in the world. We men, and cows, are not worthy of thee!

Just one char isn't so bad, knowing people who don't have girlfriend or wives and play females in every rpg they play is scary. But admittedly the female character avatars in this game are hot. Remember that quafe contest. I was just thinking those queens were nice... real nice... and they were really girls. And their avatars looked like them ... ahhhhhhhehehahahhahhahaahhhhhhhhhhhh [:drool:] |

Edited by: Zigrah on 14/03/2005 18:10:38 Seriously, I jump to no conclusions when I see an avatar of someone. Basically I view most people as Genderless until told what gender they really are. If they say they are a woman, then I will treat them like a woman and the same for someone who tells me they are a man.
I don't care if someone is a woman that I meet on the net, what does it matter if you believe them or not. People who give women special treatment in games have some serious issues that are their own problem and not the fault of the person who is a woman or pretends to be a woman. If you let a woman boss you around or become her personal slave just because she's a woman well then you are a very desperate individual and I feel sorry for you. If you give up your hard earned isk for a chance at a cyber date well that was a personal choice you made.
If someone wants to pretend they are a woman and be treated like a woman. Who cares, by all mean let them... some people do it for the extra attentions and kindness. Some do it to scam lonely men and others do it to roleplay. Some people might just find it easier to act like a woman then explain to a bunch of chauvenistic men that they are slightly in touch with their Feminine side.
People who take issue with this or think people only do it because they are cross-dressers definately have some issues with being comfortable with their sexuality. These are the type of men who have to flex their mussles and win every peeing(other word was censored) contest because otherwise they are unmanly. Just because these people would be uncomfortable behind the toon of a woman doesn't mean all have to suffer from your closed mind. A guy choosing a female toon does not mean he's ***, does not mean he's a cross dresser etc. It just means they can be comfortable behind the face of a woman. They know that it's just a game and it's role-playing. Others will tell you immediately that they are in fact a man and mate their choices solely for aesthetic purposes.
I think any person pretending to be female for the purposes of getting free stuff is wrong, but it's their decision and they have to live with that on their conscience. Falling prey to such a scam you can only really blame yourself.
I play a male character personally but I would have no problem playing a female character. Honestly if your second in command to your corperation and you think like that I think cutting the person from the corp was doing them a favor. Chauvenistic, close-minded people bother me... and more often then not it means they find themselves inadequite and showoff to cover something else they want to hide about their true self.
Have an open-mind people.
Edit: heh it appears the forums are a little bit on ancient side too. The three letter word that is censored while can be used negatively should not be censored. There is nothing wrong with being a homosexual and used in the proper context is not worthy of censorship. Kinda lame if you ask me, we can't live in a bubble forever.

Originally by: Qayos and these people I do think are repressing some real subconscious trans-gender issues.
Originally by: Roy Focker Personally, I think something is really wrong with a guy choosing to play a female character online.
how much business really is it of anyone's what someone else's reasons are for playing any kind of imaginary character in a game? What I need to know of the people I play this game with is can I trust them to deal fairly with me, to stick in a fight with me, to give good advice when I need it, and do they trust me to do the same? What someone believes, does, likes, hates, dresses like in rl is no business of mine and I find it bizarre that people would happily make their own rl issues with these things such a large feature of their gaming experience if it's going to cause so much dissatisfaction for them.
There seems to be an inference in your post, Roy, that gender ambiguity makes people fundamentally untrustworthy. It seems a shame to me that through this viewpoint you could be narrowing your experience of the Eve community by effectively writing off nearly half the characters in the game.
Oh, and

the real Eris (the cosmic force Eris, that is) of course has no gender, but is commonly referred to as female in order to placate our infantile need for dualistic understandings of complex forces. The Moderator, Eris, however ... who cares? Just be nice to her or else

Nah, actually there's nothing wrong with playing the opposite gender in Eve, I don't give a hoot though I'd jump on the occasion to take the mickey out of someone that I learn is doing so... just for fun. Btw, Gallente birds are the cuttest but your average Amarr female looks just like the teacher you always dreamed to have in College Please note that most girls are turned on by Brutors: A tad hairy on the sides but so virile! If you're an Amarr male though, too bad for you that's the worst take in Eve. Seriously, that's akin to choosing 'Orc' in your average MMORPG. But of course it won't stop some people from going that way; I'd like to know how many players have gone through a complete makeover through the 10 Euros worth process...

well I am new to the world of Eve but in other games I have played some "women" have gotten special treatment and gifts from some people in game. Now one of these people I know for a fact was a woman and well that was just her personality that she expected to be spoiled and treated like a princess and well... some people did... others flat out hated her.
So it might be a matter of "doing something wrong" but I would be proud of the fact that you don't do that heh.
