I sorry to moan but i have spent months waiying to use the large rails and finally the day arrived.....only to be totally dissapointed I have the large hybrid skill on the smae level as my medium skill (level 3) and found that the medium rails do more damage and hit the ships more than the large ones??? I realise the tracking is an issue but even on crusiers and stationary items like the sentry guns they are absolutley crap.........i have tried from 80k-10k with all the types of ammo and cannot understand why they are so useless? Im flying a Dominix doing level 3 missions and hoped i could at last try some level 4 missions as the level 3 ones are just boring and all the same ones repeated over and over again...and find them so easy in a Dominix with the 250 rails.....they were harder with the large guns and now if i put the large guns on i cannot tank as much as i need Power Diags in the low slots...the guns use 2150 power!!!My 250's 225 power......The guns i use were 5 x 350 rails... If anyone can help me it would be of much help....i cant see that even with my tracking up a level or two would help alot....... Heres hoping for a good reason to use the large ones ?

Sorry to say, I have to agree with widget here - my 250's outdamage my 425's every time (also on a dominix) and I have skills.
It's not damage per hit. 425's regularly get better hits, but DoT that seems to be the problem.
250's hit more regularly and fire faster. They also don't seem to have the tracking problems of the 425's.
As far as I can tell, the only benefit to the 425's is the range on them, which doesn't help in deadspace when you are slow as hell and can't keep range.
Haven't tried 350's yet, but i'm expecting something similar to the 200's (just bigger and slower), which are kinda useless for damage output. ----------- "Remember people: Omber is the biggest evil ever created, DO NOT let it get to you!" Waagaa Ktlehr, BDCI

When i use large rails (lvl 5) with a tracking mod and damage mod i can hit for good damage between 15-65km with antimatter (150+). Highest wrecking i have done with one is 800+ (on an npc).
Dont moan about the guns when its either your set up or your lack of skills |

just realised, the 250's prolly do more damage due to weapon spec skills (have higher lvl on meds than large)
so I'd just like ot invalidate my post now

Level 3 missions involve shooting at cruisers and frigates.
Large guns are designed to hit battleships.
Therefore, you might want to increase your tracking, so that your 425mms are better able to hit your targets
There are 10 sorts of people in the world - those who understand binary, and those who do not. |

Edited by: Seleene on 14/03/2005 15:03:35 I would not trade my T2 425's for anything. I have hit cruisers at 10 km with antimatter and scored 900-1100 points in one hit. I have hit frigates at 120 km and obliterated them in one or two volleys. The only BS I've seen stand up to 60 seconds of fire from me is a Raven or Apoc tanked specifically against Thermal and Kinetic.
My lowest damage dealing setup has a damage mod of over 7x. My ganking setup has a damage mod approaching 8.4x. Blasters? We don't need no stinking blasters!
As for damage over time, I hate all that math. All I know is that at least 50% of the time I'm at the top of kill mails with Gankageddons below me who started firing at the same time I did.
Of course, this is all based on experience in PvP. I have no idea what it's like against NPC's but I can't imagine the results would actually be worse.

NPC mission & largest guns = bad combination.
Frigates, you will hit them when you throw 00 on d100 Cruisers, you will hit them occasionally Battleships, you will hit them constantly
And when the mission consists 2 BS, 30 cruisers and 100 frigates, you are screwd. Your time to complete the mission is actually longer than with smaller weapons, this is because.
Frigates, are easily wiped out with quick-track cruiser weapons Cruisers, are hit everytime with cruiser weapons Battleships, are hit everytime with cruiser weapons
So what you lose in time to kill battleship, you will gain in killing the others. SigPl/HQ&Log Coy/MNB(C)/KFOR |

nah just use torps or webbys and a tracking enhancer or just let loads of medium drones sort them out.

I'm not sure the original poster was talking about ganking setups, which are slowly destroying the game, TBH.

Yeah.. the 424 rails suck until....... you get your skills higher on rails. Tracking, longdistance targeting etc is important. However, the most important skill is surgical strike which is 3x per level. That was my last gunnery skill to train up... wished it was they first. That skill alone changes your total damage output. Check it out or let us know if you have it or not.
Yeah they suck at the beginning.. but what doesnt.

Dunno why ppl moan about railguns sucking for damage and blasters sucking for range, i think they are f*cking awesome. Its just the fact that you get all these ppl wanting to tank and do great dmg, such as an apoc or raven do, a few words for ya, THIS GAME IS NEVER GOING TO BE BALANCED, it would suck otherwise, the great thing about Gallente ships is you can do insanly nice damage but you run the risk of being killed yourself, you gotta be more careful about how you fly.

I've got large railgun spec 4 and I have no complaints about dmg.
Cap use, though, is a different matter.

range isnt a boon in deadspace missions cus you get dropped in the middle of everything and in a battleship without MWD possibility you wont gain any distance either. i have to agree with that medium weapons are far superiour outside PVP when it comes to rails :/

Large railguns are fine. I'm not a thron pilot so wont pretend I know anything about 425's, but I fly a Domi and know a fair bit about dual-250's.
They work well at 5 - 30km, up to 50km with ranged ammo. Their high-damage (and it is high) range corresponds well with drone range.. hint hint... They track BS fairly easily under 10km, meaning you can even have a decent chance if a blasterthron gets too close. -- jamesw Rubra Libertas Militia
