I did the math for mining yields and realized that my Prophecy with 6 Miner II's equals the pull of a medium barge with 2 strip miner I's.
Does that strike anyone else as low?
Shouldnt a mid range designated miner have a greater pull than ANY combat ship?
And, just to throw some fuel on the fire, if the haul of strip miners was increased by (picking a somewhat random number) 50%, wouldnt that go a long way to making mining a profitible professiion again and relieve the shortage of low end minerals in empire?

Add to this the RL time it takes to train for a barge. Especially a large one. 5 or 6 lvl 5 skills to use it. The last one being a 20-30 day skill depending on attributes.
I'm not heading for a career as a miner until they get barges that wtfpwn a roid in 30 seconds flat

miner I's do 40 ore base, miner II's do 60 base, 50% increase a mod strip miner II with t2 crystals and a crap load of skills, is only 16.6% better than the strip miner I. they need to up those across the board.

I have not done the math BUT...
Using mining barges is for the dedicated miner. No ship ingame can outmine the Covetor, no ship can even come close.
This leaves the smaller 2 barges. The problem I think here is that people look at them and say... I can mine better with... The Retriever and Procurer are not mainly mineral mining ships.
The Procurer to me is a pure Ice miner, there is no reason to use the ship for anything else but for a small operator wanting to get in on the ice market its the way to go, its not a good ice miner but it may be a good choise for the player who cant afford to loose all that much.
The Retriever is a decent mineral miner but again ist mainly an Ice miner, at its price its an affordable step into the ice buisness and it will actually beat most other ships when it comes to mining.

I did the math when they first came out...a fully mining Apoc comes pretty damn close, and it doesn't rely on a ship that can be broken much easier than a tankable Apoc. I think the biggest Mining Barge only did another 100 m3 of ore per minute compared to the Apoc.
Add in skill training times...oy vey...

M mining barge = 9mil or so about 11-12 with the strip miners. or you could chose an...
...Apoc with 8 miner 2's = 150mil+ mil including insurance.
Come back with a decent argument please

Do you expect your 300k Lamborghini to haul rock as well as my 2000 dollar Ford pickup? I dont bloody well think so. An APOC costs more because its a top of the line COMBAT SHIP. Not because its supposed to be better at every job ever concieved. Should it haul more than a bestower just because its more expensive?
Come back with a better argument please.

Edited by: Rawne Karrde on 15/03/2005 05:06:09 I have trained for the large barge. I've trained all the skills necessary to use the t2 minin crystals and even had the mod miner II's for a very short time.
Point is lare barge 33 mil, 3 mod strip miner II's 120 mil, t2 crystals aren't much to make if you know someone who'll do it for a realistic price.
what sucks is now i've spent all this isk, and time training on a ship that can't stand alone in .4 space from an npc attack. For after all this, i would have been better off just using an apoc with 8 miner II's and some heavy/medium drones.
yeilds need to be increased to make it really worth all that training.
ps. after doing all that training my barge has been put in permanent storage, my mod miner II's sold off, while i do agent missions. With such a disappointment i'll mine guristas more than roids.

My theory is that they come up with a new cool idea and implement it, but then they get afraid that it won't be balanced properly and "ruin the economy", so they implement it nerfed to the point of uselessness. Examples: barges, POS's, rate at which T2 is introduced...
They figure "we can always buff it later". Unfortunately, "later", they get too busy with fixing bugs and doing other stuff.

Well a Mining barge isn't only used for mining regular ores. You can use the level one and level two barge for ice mining and sell them and make isk and use tht to buy mins

In fact, Ice mining is the very big reason for the barges, as they're obviously the only ships to do that.
Anyways, when working in a mining group, nothing can really beat a team of a few barges with a defender and a hauler. Of course Apocs are better tanked. But yet, 100m¦ difference per minute DOES make a noticable different at the end of a decent mining op. And believe me, Once a team of covetors unloads their med drones, they can defend very well in 0.4, it's just not a solo mining ship for those low secs, where you actually shouldn't be solo mining for various reasons anyway (I know, many do so, but whatever, they're usually the ones that get shot at as well, be it apoc or Covetor...)
