You can do that actually tweaking some files. You need a program to access the game inner folders(where the music/graphics/skins etc are stored),using a program, theres one around, cant remember name, eve file extractor or something like that.Others wont be able to see your tweaked skin, but you can.You can change your apoc skin for a hoarder in theory, even a titan.
Kind of pointless, but funny I guess.

Yes, I believe it's called DevHax 3.0 beta.

every time someone brings this up, someone says "you're not allowed to change game files", I guess I'm saying it this time.
While I haven't checked, I wonder if the client does an integrity check on startup and if any of the files have been altered you get banned...
would be easy to do with MD5 hashes, though the astute hacker would just store valid hashes and return them when the server asks for the hashes back. Of course, were CCP smart about it they would have send a random 16-character string to be appended to the end of the file before it's hashed, then it would be really hard to compute the valid hashes. Even then the hacker could change the software's behaviour so that it reads a set of valid files for hashing purposes and then reads the altered files when actually running the game.
Ah, the great and interesting world of computer security :)

Edited by: ZeeWolf on 15/03/2005 10:12:08 Isnt there anything in the EULA that disallows tampering with the skins/textures?
But if you could.. would that mean to could make a cloaked ship appear bright pink?

That would depend whether the client knows where the cloakship is. At least it's probably possible to make your own ship pink while cloaked, since you can see it.

seeing this is brought up frequently, why don't ccp realise some extra skins for the ships which can be seen by everyone - like 3 different skins for each ship

That cloak trick worked in Tribes 2, but only because you never became 100% cloaked. You could always see slightly transparent model.
In eve cloaked ships become 100% invisible.
And editing game failes is indeed against the Eula. Getting an Amarr Navy Apoc will get you a diffrent skin though ---------------------------

last time i heard of it being done peps was getting banned because only u seen the altered ship. to every one else it appeared as the little whihte box on screen but no ship. kinda a LARGE tactical advantage.

Where is the tactical advantage if you can still see the 'this is a player' white box tag on ships and can still lock? You just don't have the asthetically pleasing view of watching your torps/megapulses/neuron blasters ripping the **** out of the other ship...
Seriously though - weren't CCP originally going to include a ship customiser in EVE? Its still on the features list on this website which is amusing and in the early trailers for the game there is some footage of the customisation system I believe. What happened to it? ________________________________________________ Stop Whining!!!

I think you will get into EULA difficulties if you alter the client. Changing stealthed ships to pink would be possible because your client has to know the ship is there in case it acts in a hostile way towards you, even if you cant see it whilst in stealth. Basically I would expect it to be protected in EULA cos altering the client opens the way for a load of display hacks/cheats.
But I would like to see better weapons skins...I have a huge Typhoon, supposedly an impressive ship of destruction and its got these pathetic little turrets on it... Come on, I want massive turrets if im shooting projectiles a metre and a half wide, like 5 times their current size...
