I'm not very into alliance politics, so I'm not sure what is going on in the null right now. However I'm interested to know how largely the goons actually influence the market; what items do they control, how strong is its grip on them etc. Guess this thread could serve as an assesment of Goonswarm's market abilities. I want to repeat that I have no clue of their actual power; I know about tech, but other than that I don't know. |

You wanna know what kind of power we hold in the market place, go take a look at the price history of Oxygen Isotopes. |

Minimal influence, no control, no 'grip'. DRF can, over time, set the price for technetium as stockpiles are depleted. Theoretically a coalition of wormhole alliances could some day manipulate T3 prices upward. Something like 85% or more of all players in EVE live in Empire space and do their production and consumption there, nullsec alliances are largely a footnote economically. |

Such naievity. When null figures out some new battle strategy (hellcats? alpha?) prices for those ships spike and availability is lowered. When large null alliances start fighting, they start sucking ships and minerals from empire. I don't think you've given this too much thought, theres more to it than the wares in null... they affect hisec in many ways. Do they control hisec? No, but do they impact it? Certainly.
Not to mention if CCP goes through with removing ice from hisec, leaving us hisec ice miners... wanting. That would be... interesting. |

Isn't high sec ice already non-replenishing? I gather it's already going, just at a glacially slow rate.

Do the math; the ships expended in nullsec fights are a drop in the bucket. There just aren't very many people in nullsec, on top of which a disproportionate number of the characters that are stationed in nullsec are purpose-trained alts with minimal purchasing needs. Every coalition in nullsec could switch from maelstroms and abaddons to megathrons and there would be a few days of erratic pricing, with most of the temporary price changes a result of speculation rather than actual demand. Empire supply grossly outstrips nullsec demand (and Empire demand too). Only in scenarios where some element of supply is bottlenecked in nullsec are nullsec alliances capable of being relevant long-term. |

Depends. Empire manufacture is extremely competitive sometimes with negative margins (the sign of oversupply), but low end minerals aren't oversupplied else they wouldn't be trading as high as they currently are. And Goons couldn't cause a two-fold increase overnight in oxygen isotope prices, if that was being "oversupplied".

They are implementing a game change (removal of ice from high sec) then profiting from it based on secret information and insider knowledge.
Ever wonder why CSM minutes take 6 months to publish? So people on the Council and the players they tip off can wring more profit out of inside knowledge. |

I remember when people used to whine and complain that the Northern Coalition controlled the technetium market, now they're whining and complaining about the goons controlling...well...um.
Goons don't control anything, physically. They simply have the ability to influence large groups of people who collectively control market forces. It is the same as the President of the United States telling the world "the stock market is going to crash tomorrow," causing everyone to sell and, sure enough, the market crashing..
The goons don't need to physically do anything. All of Eve believes every word they say for some reason (anyone who knows a thing about goons should realize how ironic this is).
I'm not supporting or condeming them, I just think the whole situation is hilarious. |

I think there's a lovely quote from Dune that comes to mind with the whole Iso situation:
It's not he who controls the spice who controls the univers, it's he who can destoy the spice that controls the universe. The Spice must flow.
The same really can be said about isotopes. If they manage to truly interdict the Oxygen Isotopes, ganking 24/7 in all the ice fields, the amount of oxygen isotopes available will dry up, at which point yes, every gallente capital, and every gallente tower will be in trouble.
In the mean time, it's causing a lovely stir in the economy. Isotopes have skyrocketted due to speculation, Brutixes are high in demand ( by goons ), macks and ice harvesters and everything else related to mining ice will also increase in demand as more of them go Boom.
So in all, let me add another lovely quote:
War is good for profit. ( rule of aquisition number 44 )

This is great. I love the panic and grief caused by a relatively small group of people targetting a small area in hisec and 1 market item. I love how the conspiracy theories pop up, how goons are destroying the game, the trolls about hisec ice disappearing, and above all, the opportunities this all creates.
Good profit in unstable times, just like when they banned lots of ice mining bots (and then let them all back on again) |
