A common complaint against ECCMs is that there is no advantage to them in themselves. If there is no ECM used, they do nothing. The counter to TD gives a clear offensive advantage. The counter to SD gives a targeting edge. This is nothing new, but I had an idea: merge SB and ECCM into one module.
The heart of the idea is to use scripts to choose between range, targeting speed, and sensor strength.
The current SB, unscripted, gives a small increase to range and targeting speed. I suggest the addition of a small sensor strength increase. A new ECCM script would then be used to give the full current ECCM increase. There is still nothing GÇ£extraGÇ¥ from the script itself, but the module is still useful and versatile.
I have a secondary idea: let these modules be stopped at any time (rather than forced to cycle).
This may use more cap (balancing the advantage), but it allows for quicker reactions. If an ECM attempt is thwarted, then being able to switch to something else may help. Drones come to mind. If they miss a jamming cycle then switching to a targeting speed script seems logical. That said, I think standard procedure would be to equip a Scan Resolution script, lock target, and switch to ECCM (keeping a Targeting Range script JIC).
Naturally this gets complicated from here. What happens to the BPOs? What happens to T2 BPOs? What about the different types of sensor strengths and ECCMs? Should they be different modules or should scripts handle the differences? I donGÇÖt have answers to all those natural questions, but I figured the idea was worth presenting anyway.

I like the idea of boosting ECCM modules, although I don't think merging them with Sensor booster is best.
With your idea: -- pros: It provides a significant amount of utility to ECCM modules. I have found that an ECCM modules has no benefit other than to prevent a jam, whereas all other EWAR counters have innate utility beyond countering EWAR. This makes them useful without the pressence of an enemy.
-- cons: Sensor boosters already have signficant utilty. The ability to target faster and farther makes sensor boosters strong, but increasing their ability to limit being jammed makes these mods too good, especially with their low fitting requirements. Although your use of scripts to was a very good idea.
Perhaps combing the ship scanner and the eccm projector, and a passive targeter with the ECCM backup arrays. Use a script to scan a ship or boost your sensor strength, or enjoy passive targetting and a small boost to strength with the backup array. |

I like this idea, but It should be a vary small amount that could be scripted to be the same level as a current backup array. that way current ECCMs are still used has a slight boost but dual or tri sensor boosted ships will be the only way to really get any good boost.

The idea is to make it a decent choice between EW modules or Anti-EW modules. Right now, ECCM has a sever downside. Something needs to be done. Variations of the idea are welcome. It seems I'm the only one who favors strengthening the weakened SB modules (nerfed long ago). |
