Shields or Armor active tank.
I'm curious what people think is better, rules are simple.
Your choice: armor or shield
and then your reason.

Armor Passive all around resists make you not use that much cap. That way you can use your armor repairer with ease. Also its good to know when you are taking damage and have time to react to turn on your armor tank. Shield acts like a buffer tank that way, becoming more than being completely useless. In shield tanks, when your shield is down, your armor doesn't matter at all, and is more useless than shields in active armor tank. |

Shields:
Ship is faster/more manoeuverable, and frees up low slots for gank/tracking and/or speed mods.
As well, shield-tanking just has that certain elan that armour-tanking sadly lacks. (I've thought so since the day I first read the tutorials about both types of tanking, what feels like half a lifetime ago :)) There is a fine and proper artistry to wielding verbal scalpels, such that the crap-poster you've slashed doesn't even know they've been cut. But verbal bludgeons -- Those are just fun. |

Both, because when there are two groups and each has an opposite opinion, the only real, wise, answer is the combination of both.

Armor.
Damage going through the shield first gives me (usually) enough time to ponderously ponder how to react (panic, flee, whatever) to the situation. I still like armor because as said it gives you some time to ponder what to do next, as with shields it's immediately 'all hands on deck, man your battle stations!'
Tough I found some love for shield tanking over time.
I guess it all depends what you fly and how your skills are. Hi, I'm CCP Arrow, I screwed up the.. ummm... |

I've seen a build posted for it, but it's stupidly expensive, and if you don't gauge your prey well it can cost you a damn expensive ship and fittings. On the other hand, the way its use was described was hilarious. |

*sigh*
Guess it's up to me to make a "srs post."
They both have their pros and cons.
Shields: - do not slow down the ship - use mid-slots and free up low-slots allowing weapon, tracking, and speed mods to be fitted - have very fast active repair mods, which are excellent for "burst" tanks (see: soaking up large amounts of damage for a short period of time). - regenerate with time
Armor: - has a more even resistance profile - can have its resistances beefed up far more easily than shields - has the potential to have more "raw" HP - is less capacitor intensive (you can fit for an entirely "power free" setup).
The reason people poo-poo on armor right now is because "speed" is FOTM and one of the two armor tanking races has weapons that are ill conceived for slow, bulky ships. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective. |

As lots of people have probably said, it really depends- there is no 'best' tank type. It all depends on what you are doing, what you are flying and what the other guy(s) is/are flying.
That being said, I love armor tanked ships. The high EHP and high resist profile combined with the low signature, MmmmmmmmMMMMM! Very good. |
