I can't launch a DSP yet so I have been trying to read up on how to quickly determine if a signature is a WH or not. I have read that it'll show up as "unknown" in the list. Is there a certain size my probes need to be at or a certain distance for this to be true? |

You can also try out 'Siggy, ' a web-based program that allows you to see the 'radius' of all signatures from a single scan. GÇÄ"Don't give yourselves to the unnatural men, machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts. You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men!" -Charlie Chaplin |

You don't need to use a DSP, combats work just fine too. You need to just need to recalibrate your results based off your probe strength off existing charts of sig strengths that are fairly widely available.
Personally I always probe every sig to be 100% sure. Also, with high probing skills I find using sig strengths is a trivial difference at best in probing speed in WHs. |

You can use combat probes set to 64 au. If you can't cover a system with one probe, use multiple probes set to cover the system (to avoid having to move a probe, possibly to the wrong spot), but only activate one per scan.
Sort your signatures by signal strength, lowest to highest.
You will notice three major signal strength bands: small, medium (2x small), large (2x medium). [Assuming the system has all three types... you will learn to recognize what signal strengths are what with your equipment and skills.]
Wormholes are predominantly large, with only a very few exceptions (e.g. D792 is small). Radar and magnetometric sites are always small, as are high-quality ladar and gravimetric sites. |

Signature Strength (describes the process of elimination you can use with sig strengths; this can be very helpful in certain wormhole systems where the local static is in a the 1/15 or 1/25 band since that wormhole will be the only signature in the system in that band) Complete Signature Strength List Wormhole Signature Strength List

There is one more trick you can use sometimes aswell. You know how the signature ids are similar to each other? For example TAL, BAL, CAL etc... Well, when you see a sig that is a different sequence, it means it spawned sometime after the last downtime. These quiet often are wormholes, so if you have multiple sigs of the WH strenght, pick the one with its id standing out. |

This will help with any K162, Wandering, or static that pops AFTER down-time. If it was up before downtime, its going to match the system's naming scheme.
I usually drop a single 32 au sisters core scanner and look for things in "brackets" of strength. For example, the wormhole I came through is usually a K162, so will show up as 1.25% signature strength on global scan like that. Everything else that is near that (say 1-1.5%) is the same signature strength as my K162, so could therefore be a K162, a ladar, or a grav.
Wormnav uses a signature strength system on a scale of 10; K162s are 10 (so the highest strength). You can step down through the "brackets" of sig strength and approximate where a static will be (say if its a 2.2 sig strength on wormnav, it's likely to be near the bottom, with the Radars/Mags).
