Edited by: Barak Gideon on 29/03/2005 19:52:17 Mining is so boring, why not add ship classes which can haul entire asteroids ? freighter size engines should do the trick.

I think Comet mining will be a little more exciting...

Quote: v. mined, minÀing, mines v. tr.
1. 1. To extract (ore or minerals) from the earth. 2. To dig a mine in (the earth) to obtain ore or minerals. 2. 1. To tunnel under (the earth or a surface feature). 2. To make (a tunnel) by digging. 3. To lay explosive mines in or under. 4. To attack, damage, or destroy by underhand means; subvert. 5. To delve into and make use of; exploit: mine the archives for detailed information.
'Mining' has ONE letter 'N' in the middle.
WTF is 'MINNING'? Come on - make an effort with these posts.
Hauling asteroids is a bad idea - mining them in situ is good, mmkay? (As long as you don't ask me to do it - I unloaded 5 heavy missile launchers into an asteroid one day and still got no ore ) -- ** All accounts cancelled - have fun guys ** |

While it wouldn't be good for gameplay, realism would say I should wrap an expensive secure can around the nearest asteroid and release nanomachines on the asteroid. When they have expired I can return and collect the separated ores or even purified minerals directly into my hold.
This would of course include a small likelihood of nanomachine error which would result in my vessel being devoured and processed into separated ores or even purified minerals. Hopefully my ship will give the crew and I a chance to escape before it is too late.

certain ore types should have the risk of chain reaction, resulting in a smartbombish explosion, able to blow up a battleship if there is enough ore in the rock.

That might be a bit extreme unless there is some way for the pilot to know what is about to occur and give them a chance to get away. Remember that mining barges are seriously wimpy...anything that *might* take out a battleship would definitely take out a mining barge (or newb ship).
I was thinking there should be something like rogue asteroids that will occasionally roll towards your ship. The pilot would have plenty of time to see it coming and move but it would throw off AFK miners who might well come back to see there ship has been destroyed. Only downside is an AFK miner only needs to orbit a roid to avoid this but that is not always possible making it at least a bit harder for them to do that.

Mining right now sucks...
Running level 4 missions makes you five times the money and you get Tech 2 components or 25 frigs as random rewards... Completly stupid.

Some ideas to make mining a little more exciting:
- I like the rogue asteroid idea, perhaps you can scan for them and warp to them - small globuals of asteroids (or sections of asteroids), that are not part of any asteroid belt - they may have higher than normal resources for the system (i.e. Finding Kernite in a 0.9 rogue asteroid).
- Make mobile refineries actually useful - or even a mid-slot module for a mining barge as has been suggested (i.e. allow a pilot to refine the ore in his cargo bay with heavy water or whatever fuel is necessary to refine)
- Comets from Exodus would be interesting
- When a ship is destroyed is turns into a "hausk of X ship" (you know, the ones you see in missions sometimes), this can then be salvaged for a fraction of the minerals that was use to make the ship
- Make a version of Mobile Refinery that requires us to tow asteroids to it
- Rarely find ancient artifacts in the asteroid (the asteroid may have been a planet or moon colony at one time - great backstory here)
- Find alloys and compounds (you know the ones we get from Drone missions), in asteroids occationally.
- Have volital gases escape and blow up in the face of a miner (about 100-150 points of damage - not enough to blow up a barge)
- Have asteroids block missiles and LoS attacks
- Occationally have special rogue drones or NPC pirates hide in an asteroid and POP in your face when you mine it.
- Have hidden Sentry Towers inside asteroids (Sentry Towers disguised as asteroids that at one time protected something there)
- Allow us to find things like metals (iron, alluminium, etc.)
- Allow us to sometimes find the fuels for simple reactions (some asteroids belts may have been moons at one time)
- Put asteroid fields in hazodous areas (i.e. put an asteroid field really close to a star that does say 10 Thermal damage/sec)
- Have us tow asteroids to an space station in the system (could be missioned based)
- Allow us to build a special POS in an asteroid field just like how NPCs build them into them
- Have us orbit a gas giant at very low altitude and collect gases from the atmosphere (scanning the planet will tell us the proper orbiting range to collect gases)
- Allow us to add a "scooper" to our ship and orbit around planets with rings - we'll mine the rings for ice/ore/whatever (our flight path determines how efficient our scooper is).
- Have asteroids have a "chewy center", basically you mine the outside of an asteroid only to find another type of ore inside of it (i.e. what looks like a Veldspar asteroid actually has a Pyroxeres center).
- Random asteroid fields - spawns of asteroids that move around and aren't fixed - some days they are there, others they have moved
- Different configurations of asteroid fields
- Asteroids that are "Unknown" that can be mined and delivered to Research Agents
- A special agent Mining Mission: A rogue asteroid is approaching a settled planet, we need you to mine it before it crashes into their planet - you warp in and the asteroid is moving towards a planet, so you need to mine it before it hits it (Call the mission Armageddon)
- Variant of the Armageddon mission is that you can destroy it with weapons, but it has ALOT of hitpoints
That's all I have for now. Just a little brainstorming.
