I'm surprised I've seen nothing about this.
It would be fantastic if this game had a*****pit view. Don't get me wrong... the external view is awesome. But being stuck to the outside of the ship eventually takes away the feeling of immersion. It ends up being like you're watching a movie of someone else flying a space ship, rather than feeling like "you're" flying the space ship. If you could flick to an internal view (Or even just a fixed forward facing view from the ships nose) it would increase the feeling of immersion for me ten fold.
I know it's childish... but I like to sit at my computer, and imagine the screen I'm looking at is the forward display of my space ship, and imagine that the room I'm sitting in is the*****pit, and that if I stand up and walk out the room... I'll be moving into the bowels of the ship, and can inspect the cargo (Or go sleep in my "crib"). Like I said... It's childish, and I've been imagining that ever since I was 9years old and playing "Elite" on the Atari ST, but it's fun! and adds a lot to the atmosphere of a game.
Without an internal or*****pit view... I just can't convince myself that I _am_ inside the spaceship I'm seeing onscreen. I feel decidedly _outside_ of it. Not as atmospheric as it could be!

if you would examine eve short storyes closer you would see that ship flight is not as we think of it, you are stuck into pod filled with gel, so infact you cant travel within the ship, and since you cant see in that pod (all data is feeded by neural link) then cocpit view is impossible.
but in reality terms, i think why you dont see it is because ccp havent thought of it, or this would break things etc. ----------------------------------------- The price of freedom is eternal vigilance |

True but you can stick a camera in the window.

Edited by: arkad on 05/04/2005 17:16:07 Yeah I like the idea of***** pit view, even given the story line of you being in your pod stuck in gel. Of course the next step in this kinda game is to be able to explore your own ship in first person mode and take over other ships etc and of course planetary landing. Something to look forward to in the future i guess.
LMAO at the word "COCKPIT" being edited out!! what madness

The reason ships have windows is simple. The pod pilot trend is a fairly new technology so most ships have been adapted over from full crewed vessels to accomodate this new system where the ships CPU is linking directly to the pilots brain giving one person the ability to control all of the ships major systems. Originally the ships were built for full crews, battleships having about 6000 crewmen I recall reading on pictures of early blueprints that were on the site in the now distant past. The pod technology is a Jovian technology that has recently been handed over to the empires, so the empires have adapted alot of their vessels to accomodate the growing number of pod pilots or eggers as we are referred to that are springing up in the empires. All players are pod pilots, alot of the NPC's are still considered to be standard crew based vessels since many dont have access or desire to adopt the pod piloting technology. All of this info and more is in the back stories, you should really look into them when you have a few spare moments, alot of the game mechanics will make so much more sense to you after you have done your homework.
Its better to be hated for who you are than loved for who your not. |

Sounds like someone misses Earth & Beyond.
Lets see, 10 - 12 thousand players on one server switching views & "moving around" Think you have lagg now
E&B used what, 4-5 servers & still could never solve the lag problem. But I do miss being able to watch my character push buttons & operate the ships controls while I literally flew it anywhere I wanted to go. It was definately submersive. |

Edited by: Lonely Joe on 05/04/2005 19:01:25 I thought of the same thing. Earth and Beyond fan wish.
But where would the non-existing individual go? It's a character portrait and not a walking person in the game.
You'd only see the bridge, but you wouldn't see a guy reacting to torture of being attacked or pushing buttons or reacting to warp jump etc.

FYI: Even pod piloted vessels still have crews. Though less then normal ships they have no bridge crew at all but still a lot of people who keep the ship running. Janitors, Engineers, etc.
Which is why ships still have windows.
Anyway,*****pit view would be pointless. Coding and designing time would be used up for something that doesnt add anything to the game. Id rather see em fix bugs and new ships ---------------------------

I think*****pit view would be cool. Submersion is VERY important.
