Question2

Im trying to do a tracert to the EVE tranq server to see if a downed router is causing lag to me or its something else.
Firstly, what is the eve server IP?I was told i could find it on the login screen but i dont see it anywhere.
Secondly, what should i look for?How do i distinguish whether a router is down,or is "high lagged" or something?

It only shows up when you cant connect to the server (When your net is down or its dt). So just turn your internet connection off and have a look. --------------------------------------------------

Maybe but that's the truth...
Why not just trace microsoft or ebay, you will know if the problem is on your side? If it's ok with them, nothing you can do about Eve. If not, time to call your provider! |

Edited by: Moominer on 09/04/2005 14:43:16 Run cmd.exe
type: netstat -an and look for the eve connection to find the IP
type: tracert -d ip
(drop the -d to resolve router ips to their name - slower)
look for any nodes on the route that are high latencey (lagged) or stared (down)
For an OK route you will get something like:
Quote:
tracert -d 157.157.139.10
Tracing route to 157.157.139.10 over a maximum of 30 hops
1 <10 ms <10 ms <10 ms 192.168.0.1 2 16 ms <10 ms 15 ms 10.127.0.1 3 15 ms 16 ms 15 ms 62.31.64.225 4 31 ms 16 ms 15 ms 172.18.20.65 5 31 ms 31 ms 31 ms 194.117.136.142 6 31 ms 47 ms 32 ms 206.24.169.169 7 31 ms 16 ms 62 ms 204.70.193.113 8 31 ms 16 ms 31 ms 206.24.169.2 9 31 ms 31 ms 16 ms 166.63.222.145 10 31 ms 32 ms 31 ms 195.2.10.126 11 15 ms 32 ms 15 ms 195.2.10.57 12 31 ms 31 ms 16 ms 166.63.210.23 13 31 ms 78 ms 32 ms 166.63.214.198 14 32 ms 31 ms 16 ms 157.157.139.10
For a downed route, you will get something like:
Quote:
tracert -d 192.168.0.6
Tracing route to 192.168.0.6 over a maximum of 30 hops
1 * * * Request timed out. 2 * * * Request timed out. 3 * * * Request timed out.
The tool matt's traceroute (available for windows at sourceforce) is probably more suitable and provides more info.

Please BE AWARE:
99% of ALL "lag" problems are YOUR fault. Get that **** off your pc! Stop using 5 different file-sharing programs and wondering why u have no bandwidth, make sure your computer meets the RECOMMMENDED SPECS instead of the MINIMUM SPECS, add more ram, turn off the sound, shut down everything except eve. Got winXP? Start-run msconfig startup tab disable all apply reboot. "Never show me this message again." viola.

You can traceroute all you want but without a comparison of routes (i.e. the route before you got those problems) you won't find out anything other than you already know.
Quote:
Firstly, what is the eve server IP?I was told i could find it on the login screen but i dont see it anywhere.
EVE consists of multiple servers with one gateway. The IP's of the actual servers are unknown (at least to the most of us players). I can however give you the IP of the gateway: 157.157.139.10
Quote: Secondly, what should i look for?How do i distinguish whether a router is down,or is "high lagged" or something?
You won't know if a router is down due to the way internet works; if a host can't be reached using one router, others will be used. If all of your routes to the EVE gateway are down, you won't be able to connect.
Generally, when executing a traceroute, you should pay attention to ping times. A ping time of <200ms is generally acceptable depending on your connection, a ping time higher than 1 second isn't unless you're using a 14k4 analog modem and a really crappy telephone line. ;)

Might be due to you utilising a transatlantic link, but a consistent 40% packetloss is a bit on the high end even so.

Negative. Old computer = teamspeak server, mp3 player, fserv, + dual boot redhat linux and ancient IRC bots :)
