Anyone with any experience in the game realizes that the upcoming "bounty everyone" *feature* is just a griefer's dream come true. So I imagine a lot of folks are just letting their subs run out until after the new year to see how that actually does pan out. I know a few people who are playing Dust right now as well, so their Eve time is suffering. This may be a trend Eve wide. Only CCP knows for sure.
Plus, the OP got one number from right after downtime. Exams, Sandy, etc. may have had/are having an effect right now.
Friday morning, 0742 EST and 18,431 people on. Looks fine to me. |

Looking at it from a metrics point of veiw, it all depends on the population average of this winter to see if it holds up to last winters crucible update. Have we held onto those returning players.
Even so there is a definate percentage of players who have left EVE and not yet returned.
The question is, why not?

Is it Sandy or is it me , or is is EvE who ceased to tease ? Where is everyone? Probably backlash from high Plex prices, people are dropping subs on their extra alts, less alts, less numbers online. Doesnt explain the SHARP decline in forum activate Edit: it may be sandy, but i cant imagine that many players are from the east coast. also, 9am(eastern) is around the time the server goes down daily i think

agreed.
if the thread goes remotely off topic due to the nature of what a dialogue is, they start getting a bit happy with the edit and delete buttons. Reading my posts is like panning for gold; most it will be useless, but occasionally you'll find a nugget of gold. |

Prepare for even lesser numbers in following three weeks because
1) November, 13 - Rift: Storm Legion release (Rift leveling and story are fun despite boring PvE rading end-game a.k.a. "endless deaths during dungeon bosses encounters");
2) November, 15 - SWTOR goes F2P (surely worth checking - stories are fun);
3) November, 20 - Planetside 2 release. Game is so good I can't return to EVE yet (made it into beta few days ago) - and I don't even like FPS genre.
But I'm sure CCP will use their usual magic (a.k.a. "2 months for $19.99") in December to raise online numbers. |

As the saying goes, "there's lies, darn lies, and then there are statistics".
EVE subs go up year after year? Great. But guess what? Gamer population in general goes up year after year as well. If gamer population, on average, is going up year after year, it could easily account for growing number of subscribers. Game population numbers are creeping up across the board, in most games.
Further, if you think about it, the growing number of subs could be attributed to alt accounts. As players get deeper into the game, they often run into a wall where they can't meaningfully advance on one account, and require an alt to run whatever secondary function is needed (scanning alt, salvaging alt, logistics alt, whatever). This also could account for "growth" of subscriptions, while the actual number of human subscribers could be same or lower. We just don't know. Further, there's no way for us to know this, only CCP does. And do you think they'd flat out come out and tell us how many unique players there are in the game?
Traffic not going down is nice. But it's not going up significantly either. When newer games have have between 400k (GW2) and 1 million (WoW) concurrent users, and EVE has 29-45k depending on when you play, it's not exactly something that shouts "success" from the rooftops.
Dying? No, probably not. Stagnating? I'd say so. And has been for years. It badly needs something to shake it up. And miniscule changes or tweaks to antiquated mechanics aren't going to do it. |

-Barge buff handed over the ice belts to automated scripts. -Impending Crimewatch signals a change in core philosophy, so no expectation the game will 'improve'. -ISD-infested forums, means arguing online is no longer fun, and threads are no longer interesting to read. -Lack of a new Apocrypha in years.
But my time out of EVE has been well spent, so no worries.

^ THIS. People go on forums to troll and have fun else why go on the forums but to talk about ponies in space and tips? The general discussion is just a new features and ideas section.
The ISD's are ruining the last bit of fun in this game, i am holding on, waiting for my corp to come active again, i am basically paying to train skills and post on forums.

He's not entirely wrong though. I mean, speaking from personal point of view, there's quite a few other games to be added to this list. For instance, also November 20th, is the new Hitman game. Considering how long it's been since the last such title, I'm planning to take some time off to play that one for sure.
Another personal favourite, Far Cry 3, is coming Dec 4th. I wasn't that crazy about Far Cry 2 (OK, frankly I felt it sucked!), but the original game I re-played every winter just for the sake of beautiful palm trees, golden sandy beaches and clear blue water...and shooting mercs in the head. And Far Cry 3 promises to be a lot like the original game, only improved in many ways.
Also not on the list is the reboot of Darkfall on Nov 20th. I played the original, and am somewhat curious to see what the reboot is like.
And that's on top of generic crap titles we get every year, like the new Call of Duty and the new Assassin's Creed.
Personally I don't see myself playing EVE until late into December, or most likely next year, just because of these games I've listed. And I know quite a few people whose gaming habits are about the same.
So he's not entirely off with his predictions. |

A lot of theory crafting going on here
So many distractions out there for some of us.
Me personally:
- soccer season just ended and I'm a bit wiped from 14 hours physical work still (don't get old kids) - natural selection 2 released (and recently the combat mode). Hours lost and only feels like 15 mins - the secret world (not for everybody, but I'm thoroughly entertained when I'm faced with a puzzle). - various other minor and lower player count multiplayer games (counter strike, the hidden, Minecraft etc)
Eve is best enjoyed when you can actually string more than 2 hours together with no breaks. Right now, don't have that time until really late at night.
It's not really dying for me, so much as having matured to be savored in quality doses rather than a soup of the day. ---- CONCORD arrested two n00bs yesterday, one was drinking battery acid, the other was eating fireworks. They charged one and let the other one off. |

Comparing averages, we are only a tiny bit down on last year's pre Crucible population. It will really all depend on the winter patch and population boost. ... |
