Just a quick question regarding contracts.
I'm training up an alt to be my freighter, and in his downtime (and when going to locations I am already going to anyway) I was thinking of doing some contracts.
I was told never to trust anyone in Eve, so I was wondering - can someone renig on their contract?
Byt that I mean, they ask for xx amount collateral, then decide once I complete the contract not to pay the collateral back or my money back or is it an automated system?
I know that as the carrier, I can refuse to honour the deal and run off with the cargo - but can they choose to cancel the contact when I am midway through it and I don't get my collateral back? |

I'm assuming were talking just about courier contracts here. The issuer must select the time(in days) the person accepting the contract has to complete the delivery. Durin this time he can't fail the contract. The contract doesn't automaticly fail even after that, but after the timer he can fail it at any time he chooses. The payback is automated.
There are ways he can screw you over, but they're mostly done by making it very hard or impossible for you to complete the contract. This will cause you to fail and lose the high collateral and leave you with a worthless item. Basicly don't accept contracts you aren't certain you can deliver without problems. |

First. Payments in courier contract are fully automated. Let me explain further.
As soon as person A makes the courier contract, his reward is put into an "escrow" state. So it's deducted from his wallet into a fictional place.
When person B accept the courier, the collateral is also put into escrow. So also deducted from the wallet and put into that fictional place.
Then:
* Person B completes the contract:
The escrow pays out the payment for the contract + gives back the collateral.
* Person B takes longer then the set time to complete the contract, this gives person A the possibility to fail it (keep in mind, he can't do that while in the timeframe set in the contract, neither is it automatically done when you get into overdue status):
The escrow pays the collateral cause of the failed contract + gives back the payment.
HOWEVER.
There are lots of scams in EVE using the courier contract:
* Letting you go into low-sec with a contract that is so big it needs a freighter to move = almost certain death = you will loose the collateral.
* Letting you go into null-sec, to a player owned station that you can't dock in = you can't complete the contract ever = you will loose the collateral.
* Setting up high collateral contract for useless junk (I've seen movements of 1 unit of trit with 1 bil collateral) = the guy who made the contract will like be waiting in the route to suicide gank you.
And finally.
Public contract are kind of like death trap, plenty of scams (see above) and loads of guys who will rip you off by paying only very little to get stuff shipped.
Other then that you will compete with well known shipping corporations like Red Frog and Push Industries. These have the name to be trustworthy and besides that work quite effectively cause of their large numbers of freighters they run, making stuff move faster to other places (In the last 6 months that I used Red Frog (usually twice a week), only 1 contract did take longer then 24h to complete).

Ty.
What you of course could do is look into joining red frog when you have a freighter. Their recruitment channel is called Profit.
By joining them you can use the freighter for personal use aswel as shipping stuff around for red frog and make some money out of it. Inject your skillbook before you leave the station.
