I have a high-end PC as my main desktop/gaming rig and a Powerbook G4 as my laptop. I also work as a WindowsXP-PC helpdesk tech.
For "everyday" computer tasks (surfing the web, productivity) I use them interchangably, and I will admit that OSX has a leg up on XP. It's, in my opinion, from a usablity standpoint, a much better design and has a features that I wish were availible in XP.
XP does the job too, though.
Anywayy, if you guys at CCP don't have anything better to do, port EVE to Mac so I don't have to play WOW at work.
Thanks!

It's useless, redundant trash. Just 98 with even more random crashes and a different desktop theme. Oh, it runs faster (when it runs at all) but that's just because it sucks up more system resources. XP 4tl.
Well... perhaps practice isn't quite the word he was looking for. Lets just say that to many people it is extremely ludicrous that a duct taped together "32 bit" windowing system based upon a 16-bit DOS operating system from over a decade ago is better than a pure 32 bit OS that has such modern concepts like say, hardware abstraction layers and journaling file systems.

I still use Win98 SE since I actually bought it and built my own computers for the last 10 years. I remember when my neighbor bought a comp with a Pre-release vesion of XP and was asking me for help. I only agreed to see the future, It wasn't pretty.
Weeks later and 500 megs of updates he actually got it to work.
Cousin has a beta version win 64, looks nice so I'll skip XP altogather. Next hardware upgrade

There just aren't enough Mac clients out there to justify CCP spending time making a version for OS X.
To those who say XP sucks, I would say that there may be some problems with your install. Firstly, install the original XP and patch it to SP1, NOT SP2. If you run multiple accounts make sure you do not have SP2 and turn off hyperthreading, it's better without it.
And still my favorite most stable OS I've ever used is Win2K. Properly configured it never crashes (unless your fishtank spills all over your system unit)

Um - pre-release? If your neighbour had access to that then they had no business showing it to you. It is also unfair and frankly stupid to base your opinion of XP on a pre-release version of it.
Installing the retail version of XP on a properly built PC consists of sticking the CD in, powering up and answering some in depth questions like "what country do you live in" and "what is your name?".

Originally by: Andrue Sorry to burst your bubble but that's your hardware. Win9x obviously isn't stressing it as much (read:doesn't know how to take advantage of it properly). I have been using XP for a couple of years now and it has never crashed. Eve did for a while but since about September of last year I've had no problems.
I use Win2k at work and despite being an ebil, OS torturing software developer that doesn't crash either.
Hrm? Oh, I'd agree if I was just talking about my own PC. But I've got friends who have shiny, big expensive PCs from Dell and the like, and they STILL get crashes.
And viruses. Because XP, although it introduces lots of nice new security features, also has loop-holes that newer viruses exploit. Loop-holes that didn't exist in 98 because they didn't have those security features. 98 is anything if more virus prone. Nobody writes new viruses to specifically target 98, and all the old ones already have definitions hardcoded into all good virus scanners.
Not that anybody with more than 2 brain cells ever has to run a virus scanner anyway. Don't go looking at ****, warez or opening all those *****-extention spam emails and you're set (well, it never hurt to have a virus scanner in the background anyway. Just in case.... >_>). ---------------- Haha, stupid monkey! Now I'VE got the Oscar! Enjoy your worthless gun! |

yeah 2k pro is what I use...never used XP just get to support it everyday...have very few if any real problems with 2K the last issue I had was a simple reboot fixed (and that was just overheating).
Personally I will not install XP because I acan it all in 2k pro and not install all the crap that is part of XP...yes I know you can get rid of it I just don't want it in the first place....

Edited by: Sevarus James on 21/04/2005 22:14:17 ...and I'm different than the LOT of ya.
Linux (Ubuntu 5.04) for ALL my stuff.........and one small partition for wintendo and EVE. My linux system does EVERYTHING, and in the cedega(wine) emulator state, I can even get EVE running there as well, but not perfectly...yet.
As for stability: NO viruses. No spam. NO paying for mcaffee/symantic etc. NO paying mickeysoft for anything---priceless. ;) Crashes? lol. My system has been up and running for 2 months, with 2 reboots for a system security patch and a new sound card.
So wintendo for the only game I care about: EVE ........Ubuntu Linux---the rest.

Actually it was out of the Sony at the time between ME and XP. At the time it was made, no ME licenses were being sold and of coarse XP wasn't finished yet.

Wow...
All I can say is wow.
I'm a computer tech for many years and god this thread is a laugh. I love it when people spew garbage they know nothing about.
Windows 2000 is by far the mos stable, efficent Windows OS. However, once Windows XP hits SP4 or so, it will be just as stable.
You know why Windows XP does not run things from more than 5 years ago? Dos support is gone. It now emulates dos. OMG THAT SUX0R! No it doesn't. Dos was half the problem in the first place.
If you want to run your old apps, use Windows XP's OS Emulation (Win98, ME, 2K).
And the differences between Win2k and WinXP is for a start:
XP has a new kernal and core which supports newer hardware nativly. Windows XP is slightly faster on newer hardware. Windows 2000 is now an old OS, so latest and grestest apps and games are not specificly written for it.
Windows XP is a gaming OS more so than Windows 2000.
If you are going to say Windows is teh sux, atleast know what your talking about.
Sorry for grammer and spelling.

PC reliability is so much less dependent on the actual OS than people seem to realize.
Apple systems rely on first-party hardware interfacing with a first-party kernel. PC systems run a global plethora of hardware from makers all over, that must all interface with a first-party kernel.
Add to that the fact that most power PC users (Meaning anyone who knows what a registry IS, probably less than half of the people who use them) have upwards of 100 to 150 major applications running on them, at least a quarter of them always running in memory somewhere at any given time. Stability becomes much more dependent on the individual system and contents then on the OS.

I like to see gaming companies porting to other platforms. Even if I don't plan on using them. But personally I think that EVE could benefit greatly from a Linux and OSX port.

Eve has allot of cost associated with it.... They have not planned on ports from the beginning I doubt the benefit to them will be worth the investment to develop maintain and release it to other OS. I know you all love your Macs and I like Linux. 0.o It's not you... no wait it is you. |
