So as the name implies, what skills do I need to set myself up a decent pos? (I'm mainly looking at manufacturing/research btw)
I understand having skills at V will obviously maximize my efficiency, but what I'm asking here is what are the minimum skills I need in order to set up and run a stable POS that is able to defend itself and be able to provide a safe haven for my industrial endeavors.
As a side note I'm not afraid to skill up to tech II anything, but that can be saved for later unless deemed absolutely necessary.
Any and all suggestions welcome, I am a complete newbie to these kinds of things so I need all the help I can get!
Thanks in advance! |

Anchoring III will be enough to put up your POS. |

As Paikis said, Anchoring III will get you running but I'd also suggest to train Starbase Defense Management IV. It does require Anchoring V but it allows you to man the guns if somebody attacks your POS. Cyno alts seem to be very popular POS gunners . They can even remain in NPC corp and join when needed. |

Thanks for the advice so far guys!
Any other tips I should know about? Like do I need skills for the labs/manufacturing and how many guns I can online etc?
I guess I should rephrase the question what skills should I have to operate a "perfect" POS? |

You will need Scientific Networking and possibly Supply Chain Management skills to make things practical.

The anchoring and starbase defense are important, yeah. But you also have to ask yourself why you want to set up your own POS. I know, because I'm struggling with this myself. Things you should be asking yourself:
How many people can this starbase support? How many will actually use it? I run solo, so I'm the only person using my starbase, and it's a waste of potential. The starbase could support two mobile labs, and a slew of assembly arrays, but I can only run 8 jobs of each type. I'm working on my second and third character slots, but it'll take almost 5 months to get both of them the skills I consider necessary.
Is it worth paying for the fuel to run the starbase? Current prices on gallente fuel in Sinq Laison comes out to about 100 million ISK per month for a small tower. The research slots are irreplaceable but I can only run 8 jobs. I'm paying over 12 million per month for each lab slot. You can buy a LOT of blueprint copies for that 100 million ISK. Enough to keep NPC station factory lines running for a month, I'm sure. A POS is a very long term investment. You can research your own originals, but they won't actually start saving you money for months, at least.
So, what skills do you need? Production Efficiency V, of course, but then increase the number of simultaneous jobs you can run as high as possible. Train up alternate characters if you have to. The research boosting skills are nice, but your main bottleneck will be the number of jobs you can run. |
