Thread Necro!
I wanted to talk about PS2 but didn't want to create a new thread for it.
I had the chance to get in on this on the weekend before the game opened to the public but I didn't take it and now I'm kicking myself for it. Instead I finally got around to downloading it at the start of my 2 week Christmas break and ended up living in the PS2 world for both weeks.
To start off, every one is right about the lack of tutorial. Seriously, some random voice briefly describes who you are fighting for and then promptly hot drops you into the middle of a combat zone without so much as even letting you pick a class or learn what you are carrying. After about an hour the shock starts to wear off and you can finally get around to learning the game a little bit.
I started out on TR because a friend was already playing it. I managed to hook up with him and bunch of his friends and we ran around all night wreaking havoc in style and fun. I started with a Heavy assault but later moved on to medic with the line of thinking healing = xp, which is true but the medic has turned out to be a pretty fun class.
Anyways, a couple of days go by and I got tied up in some other things. During this time one of my other friends got the game and he and my friend switched to VS, his reasoning being that TR helmets look stupid and he had a bunch of coworkers playing on another server. So great, I make another medic and bust ass getting some points on him. I get the forward grip, ns/nv scope, and soft point ammo and its like night and day compared to what you start with, I actually started getting more kills than the rest of the team. I also took the time to beef up a Liberator, which is considered the bomber of aircraft. I get a AT cannon on the bottom with a 1.5 zoom and a upgraded AA gun on the rear along with 2x armor plating. This thing starts smoking ground forces. And then the entire group decides to go NC because they got tired of the Vanu Derp players. ****, great.
I told them this is the last time I'm moving because I hate putting a lot of work into a character just to start over again. This time I'm focusing on recon/engineer for massive points gain. As a recon we split up into small teams and hit up enemy dominated territories and just wreck the living **** out of rear bases, destroying shield generators and turning everything that we can touch blue. A team can be in and out of a structure in under 5 minutes, long before somebody shows up to investigate. As a engineer I'm attempting to build another Liberator and I also spend a lot of time in rear bases repairing ****. People leave all **** shit destroyed because they don't want to play janitor online but honestly I'm making almost 15-20 points/hour rebuilding a base and personally I think that's a pretty damn good rate for little effort.
Pro's: Reminds me of 2142 which was my all time favorite fps for a long time until my pc declared it a virus.
The maps are ******* huge! This allows for a huge variety of events to go on at once, with everything ranging from a lone sniper in the middle of no where to zerg action at a base.
Immense battles! Camp Gibraltor was one of my favorite maps because of the sheer amount of close quarter fighting, and places like the Crown just amplify that excitement ten times over.
Con's: Rockets suck
As I said no tutorial at all. No nothing, just a gun and a ally-oop into the **** storm. It took me a while to figure out how to use the terminals and for the longest time I thought Sunderer was a location, not a vehicle.
As with all FPS games, there are hackers. While they aren't overwhelming I do confront 2-3 confirmed each night. These have involved teleporting, shooting through walls, and of course aimbot. Resurrections seems to be a pretty big one. We keep getting little teams in our Bio domes that eventually take them over no matter how many people we have present because you kill them and they just keep fighting.
There are a lot of Derp warriors present, especially on Vanu. Trying to fly a aircraft into one of the starter domes is almost suicide because of the Arial carnage going on in the thunderdome, what with ships ramming each other, tanks ramming ships, everyone shooting wildly, and a guy doing cookies in the spawn room. Outside of the dome I find a lot of idiots who like shooting team mates. I can understand the one or 2 shots occasionally because the fof doesn't always immediately pop up, but what I'm talking about are the asswipes who knock out your shields while all of you are taking a point together, or the guys who purposely try to run over as many team mates as they can with the sunderer, or the kamikaze aircraft. I think I have lost more aircraft to friendlies than enemies now.
There is a pretty big gap between FTP point gain and membership point gain and the price of upgrade. I mean if you want to upgrade to a better gun we're talking probably at least 2 weeks of play, if not longer.
Overall though this game has been super fun and has really sucked me away from everything else. |
